That joke was good to last for a few weeks, but I wonder should you change the title back to Mark MSX's podcasts (shmupcast?) or something that I arerly remember. Only MarkMSX would know the name of the thread before the joke came in.

Don't worry, I will return the title of the thread back to the usual podcast titles when I release the next episode, which will be soon :-)

In 1876 Leo Tolstoy published War and Peace.

In January of 2019 Softdrink and Mark MSX recorded a 2018 Shmup year in review episode and talked about Everything.
Seriously though, I think this is a killer episode and huge thanks to Softdrink for being such an awesome guest.

A crazy huge episode.

Topics Covered:
-EUP Discord Closed
-Greatest Shmups of All Time List
-Why community matters with guests Dingo and Shoryusatsu

Much love for all the members of my discord, the whole thing was so much fun! Also, my infinite apologies to Dingo and Shoryusatsu for their episode getting caught in development hell.

Glad to see some more shmup-centric episodes again :P
I've gotten through the first 20ish minutes, and am enjoying a take-by-take through the top-25 list. I agree, I remember last year's list being pretty good as far as the forum votes go. This year, no Darius anywhere is a crime (and the loss of Mars Matrix - unforgivable. More proselytizing is needed for that game), but if you count the Honorable Mentions it still has a semblance of variety.

The 2018 overview was fun to listen to as well. It's good you guys talk about the death of a lot of the emulation sites. It makes me wonder if there is going to be a real period of scarcity in the future, or at least a lot less accessibility as people will have to jump through more and more hoops to find mame roms.

Thanks man :-D Yeah this episode is a beast of shmup content. I think the shmup list we do on this forum is a great thing for the community. It is interesting to see how tastes and preferences shift from year to year. Another change to my own list is that I forgot to add Deathsmiles to it, even though it's my favorite horizontal shmup.

I'm about halfway through the episode, and I'm enjoying it! I liked your take on the list, and thought it was cool that you added your own list, and even mentioned the changes you'd make, given what you've played since you voted.

Yeah, I guess I am. I mean, I know some of the 'secret clubz' where more roms hide, but emuparadise, coolroms, isozone... these were usually my first places to hit up. I really don't know what things will be in the future. There has to be some concerted effort to disseminate up-to-date mame roms.

Thanks man! It was a lot of fun to talk about the list. Ya making a list like this is no easy task, but I think the cool part is seeing the end result of what all the voters thought about the list. My list will certainly look different next year. It's like the wider your experience with the genre gets, the harder it is to make a list ranking the games, because there are so many and personal taste is really hard to ignore.

Today l get the chance to talk with the omega-level homie, Plasmo, about Stunfest 2019! This year was killer as always and we go over everything (at least that I could think of).

Featured players this year were Maribel (playing lunatic Touhou Ten Desires), Kiwi (playing parallel Blue Revolver), and Gus (playing 1.5 and 1.01 Futari Ultra). All the runs are highly recommended viewings.

Great episode! Having been at the event and having watched the live runs on the big scene instead of the twitch English restream, it was nice knowing that this setup was still an enjoyable way to watch the superplays. The insights about the organization were quite interesting to hear, and that's also where you realize being in a European country isn't too bad for shmup events and meetups (though it can never compare to Japan of course).
And that podcast episode helps coping with the fact that this year's Stunfest is already behind us.

IIRC in order to get negative scores in Night Raid, you have to let items drop off the screen, which can decrease your multiplier to negative values. The tricky part is that killing bunch of enemies spawns tons of those items and if you pick them up the multiplier will increase. And when you use the hug launcher (the homing/ramming attack), you don't really control your movement anymore so you can also accidentally grab items if you don't use it when the enemy positionning is ideal. A bizarre game with very kitsch art and sound design but it's rather interesting. I know there are a few French players who appreciate it and I can definitely get why.

That's awesome, I'm jealous you were able to attend this year's event. Thanks for the clarification about the negative scoring, it does sound like a pretty unique shmup. I'll have to check it out at some point, go for a low score ha.

Today the podcast is graced by Frenetic, a co-founder of STG Weekly, contributing member of the overall scene, shmup evangelist, and awesome host of many shmup-meetups over the years.

We talk about the start of STG Weekly, his history with the genre, the Cali arcade scene, as well as some ideas for hustling shmups to a wider audience. We also discuss my idea for a shmup meetup for next year: Shmup Invasion 2020.

I've been listening to your Kiwi/Moglar episodes while out-and-about at work, and I really enjoyed them! Some nice perspectives from relatively new-yet-experienced players.

This sounds like a good convo, so I'm glad I can listen to some new stuff instead of repeats as I'm out driving. 8)

@Mark_MSX - just wanted to say I've been really digging the last few episodes; I totally agree that you've found your groove and sound much more comfortable with your guests lately.

Also, I wanted to let you know that almost all of the players that play at Galloping Ghost Arcade realize that their local scores aren't really "World Records"...that has to do with the owner not recognizing many sources that we (the local community and shmups forum) all know are credible for high scores. We've spoken to him about it and hopefully change is coming.

I'm certain the players here would welcome "The Invasion", and many of them would love to meet up to hang out and play while the group is here. Please keep us informed and we will be happy to point you in the direction of restaurants, places to stay, other arcades, and anything else you might want/need.

Take care,

- Pete (aka HAN)

Hey my dude,

I appreciate the positive feedback! Especially since these days I don't really get much feedback on my episodes, which is a good and a bad thing. The good part is that I'm probably not angering the people listening ha, but it kind of is hard to know how people are feeling about my episodes without feedback.

Yeah if it came across like I was throwing shade at the players at the arcade, I'm sorry about that. I was sure the players themselves were fully aware that the scores are not World Records. I'm sure even the arcade owners must realize on some level that the scores are certainly not world records either, but maybe this whole "world record" thing is mostly for marketing and all that -- to get people to come to the arcade and play. It's not a big deal to me, just more of a fun excuse to have a bunch of shmup players meetup and go to Galloping Ghost :-)

I'll definitely have to hit you up on that offer of pointing to the best restaurants in the area, especially ones near the arcade. I lived in IL for a year back in the day and even went to Chicago a time or two, but was sadly not aware of GG's existence, so missed my chance to go there. Hopefully it's a nicer area of town where we won't have to worry about getting jumped or anything.

Cheers!

Ha ha, Brookfield is pretty 'out of the way.' You won't worry about much there, outside of escaped zoo animals.

I really enjoyed the episode with Frenetic. Now I think I've heard every possible angle on the forming of STGWeekly
Hearing him talk about hosting meets etc. was pretty surprising and encouraging; makes me almost want to give one a try. Maybe at the Galloping Ghost for this Invasion? 8)

Cultivating genre popularity is always an interesting question for this community. I think public exposure is great, and having games at events is always a good start. I think, as I saw Despatche post somewhere, having online content is also key. I poured over racketboy articles for some time as I was getting in to the genre, and still do from time to time. When you are interested in something, you tend to glut on related content (videos, articles, etc.) in order to satisfy your curiosity. I think that is one thing shmup players might be more inclined to do, whether it be streaming, posting videos, or reviews.

I just wanted to second what GGA_HAN said. Speaking as one of the local shmup players at GGA, I can confirm that we are all VERY aware that our scores are not world records. ;) The owner of the arcade does it purely for marketing purposes. We've all asked him to stop because it's insulting to ACTUAL world record holders (and frankly embarrassing to us), but he won't. So every time he mentions a new "World Record" we just roll our eyes and shake our heads.

And we'd absolutely welcome a Shmup Invasion at GGA with open arms. We'd love to come hang out and watch scores fall in January if any shmuppers decide to invade.

A really fun episode with fellow Shmup Slam Co-Host, KZ the Kusoplayer. In this episode we talk about the struggles of being midtier players and the scene's tendency to only pay attention to top tier level play. We also talk about the grind, getting into scoring versus survival only, and other attitudes we've run up against.

Good episode, Mark! I like that you're approaching it from this angle, because even for us scrubs, it's good to hear that there are others out there who don't have the supreme skills, and that it truly does take time, patience, hard work, and practice to get good. It's encouraging.

Thanks so much for listening to the episode! Yeah, getting towards the amazing level of play we often see from other players is a long journey and I do think it's important that the in-between steps are highlighted and encouraged :-) Thanks for tuning in! This was actually a really fun ep to record and people seem to be really digging it.
