Big in Japan (2018)

Oddly enough, recommendable. 3 Aussie independent film makers, mulling over how to take on a project about the era of instant celebrity, decide to go all in to make the undeniably weirdest of them famous, by moving to Japan. This is probably the most in-depth look (in video form anyway) at Japan's "talent" industry. While I'm sure a lot of people here are familiar, most people perusing Amazon Prime for something to watch probably won't be. There's some cringe-worthy material when they cover the idol sensation, but talking w/ a couple of foreign talents that fit the bill as huge in Japan is pretty eye opening.

Now I saw Shaft. That one was a fun movie to watch! Good to see three Shafts kicking ass and taking names.

The original trilogy doesn't hold up to the original trilogy.

Really? Man, that's actually kind of a shock. The "original" SLJ movie was 20 years ago, and it's kind of a guilty pleasure for me, honestly. The ads/trailers for this new one just looked awful to me. Probably won't see it in the theater, but I'll keep an eye on the free movie channels in a few months from now. It's apparently dying in theaters.

The Burbs'

Never saw it as a kid, probably would have loved it.

At 42? Meh. I can say I've seen it, but wouldn't watch it again.

Despite mixed reviews, it's actually getting a very positive audience reception. There's your proof. Trust me, you're gonna like it.

Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992)
Rewatched the first, watched the second for the first time beginning to end.
Not masterpieces overall, but the delicious Art Deco splattered all over the backgrounds, the great wardrobes, and that Danny Elfman score? Superb.
Michael Keaton was nice as Bruce Wayne, but while playing Batman? He looked like he had something stuck in his ass, heavy suit maybe? Nicholson as Joker was great, and Pfeiffer was fucking hot (apparently, she recently found the Catwoman suit hidden away, and it seems to still fit). Much respect to Michael Gough, as well, best Alfred.

Just saw Anna. Not Luc Besson's best (Leon: The Professional is still my personal favorite from him) but still passable. I missed some parts of the opening scene, though.

Shin Godzilla. Not much we haven't already seen. About 1 hour, 20 minutes longer than it had to be.

The Evangelion music and the "bilingual" lady who clearly did not know how to speak english were amusing, I suppose.

What was a really mean tease was when they started talking about the Americans wanting to use nukes. I got super excited for that scene where they nuke the Godzilla and all it does is make things much, much worse. But within a single minute the film made absolutely clear that was not going to happen - because that is not what Japan wanted to see. My joy deflated like a balloon.

No, she wasn't... as documented in this thread (by yours truly) multiple times. Watching this made me far more comfortable in my life decision to repatriate.

First time? Why would you think it would not be so good?

I saw it in the theater first run. Good times.

Yeah first time watching it. If a movie is going to be around 3 hours I have a bit less tolerance and I am also just not huge on the genre. It was good though, rather enjoyed it. Very loaded cast, kinda crazy how loaded. Great direction and I really like how the characters are fleshed out. Favorite scene is the diner scene where Pacino and De Niro each troll the other.

I convinced my sister and her fiance to watch Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 with me last night. Well, actually, the fiance requested it (it's been a running gag selection for movie night the last year or so; it was finally its turn). The Scream Factory blu-ray, which makes the film look appropriately gross in high-fidelity.

What a weird fucking movie. One of those early "subverts your expectations" type of sequels, before they got big budget and shitty! It's funny a lot of the times, but the other 1/3 of the time it's weird, sleazy, or gross. No horror or scares in this flick, but a number of moments to make you feel uncomfortable. I appreciate it, but the latter half of the flick I think Caroline Williams spends her entire script screaming high-pitched, which got grating.

My sister wasn't crazy about it, though she liked enough of it. Her words: 'this is so fucking stupid.' I mean, I don't entirely disagree, but a movie willing to put this zany shit on the screen gets high marks for effort. Definitely worth a watch!

Also, I went out to the theaters to see Godzilla, King of the Monsters. It's a low bar, but it's easily the best American-made Godzilla film. As a fan of the movies I really enjoyed it, even if the humans sometimes slowed things down or weren't interesting (he said about every Godzilla film ever). It gave me the goods so I went away satisfied. First soundtrack to a film I've considered purchasing in some time. Finally, an American movie that understands the music is actually an important part of the experience.

Glad to see you enjoyed it. Guess I'm not sure I peg it in any genre. Action? Yeah, I guess... but it's really a crime drama w/ some action in it. Hard to say what my favorite scene was... and I've seen it many times.

Factoids:
- I would assume youngsters "going back" to catch older films may not realize that this features Tone Loc.
- Kevin Gage who played Waingrow was sentenced to 41 months for cultivating medical cannabis. I recall reading at the time that everyone in the prison simply called him Waingrow. Despite playing the biggest asshole in the movie, he was apparently quite nice, and a model prisoner.

Rat Race: ***

Not sure what to make of this one really. It's an ensemble comedy from 2001 (Several of the music choices in the film make that abundantly clear) that borrows its plot from It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World before it. A billionaire casino owner in Vegas picks six random strangers and gives each one a key to a locker in a train station 600 miles away containing $2 million dollars for the first person to get it. Naturally, the race serves mostly as something for high rollers to bet on the outcome. Once the race begins the film jumps around constantly between the participants in the race as they get into increasingly ridiculous situations in pursuit of the cash. The end result is an amusing black comedy, but it fails to live up to Mad World (which, to be fair, would be basically impossible.)

Finally seen Birdman (2014), it was awesome.

Also;

Predestination (2014) - rather good time travel mindfuck

Timecrimes (Los Cronocrímenes) (2007) - not bad time travel mindfuck, wish I had seen it subbed though since the dub was a bit flat

K-Pax (2001) - nice little sci-fi dramedy with K.Spacey

A Scanner Darkly (2006) - good dystopian dramedy sci-fi in cell-shading with a fitting cast. yeah everyone's seen this, well, better late!

Re-watched;

All the Mornings of the World (1991) - one of the most beautiful fims I've ever watched, featuring superlatively good viol/viola de gamba play, tear-jerker warning tho.

Shazam (2019)
Very entertaining movie. As a fan of the best Captain Marvel (fuck off, Marvel), I liked Zachary Levy's performance. Sivanna's portrayal was ok, my main grip was the fact they pretty much turned him into Black Adam. I was surprised by the use of the new Shazam family in recent comics, and a certain tiny villain appearance right before the credits. :o

Cool Hand Luke.

This has been on my to watch list for ages. I thought it was excellent.

Wheels on Meals -

I started it and turned it off after five minutes. I want to watch it, this has also been on my list for a while. As I'm sure many in here are aware, the dub is terrible.

Would anyone here know where I could find (for purchase is fine too) the subbed version?

Thanks.

jacob@tranquilitypalace.com <--This guy creates custom blurays with all the best elements. We've talked about him in the past. I've bought a few things and the quality is good. In the past his communication was shit, but I believe he's been addressing that and is now sending out email updates.

He's probably the best bet at the moment. The Chinese Region A bluray that's pretty mediocre is out of print.

And if you just want to see it I can probably pull some links for you.
