I'm on zero, no discord, no social media anymore either, if I want to talk with people privately I have a bloody mobile for that.

On forums private messages are enough pricacy for me, because most people meeting there unless they live in the same area will actually never meet, we're only our avatars here, so would it be really worth having like 90% of the contents posted be chitchat and shitpost like on discords?
I don't think so, we're not actually a group of friends at the pub, from what I've seen since the early internet IMO discords produce the strongest 'illusionary human interaction' effect.

But see the positive side of Discord, it hurts places like 4chan and lures some trashy people away from the surface of the internet.
The good stuff disappears too yes and it's sad, but it's not something we can stop anymore, the internet reflects the mood of humanity, which is a lot of people are done sharing space whether it's real or virtual (Or would you say the latter motivated the former ? I would. We have to stop seeing the internet itself as a harmless convenient communication tool)

Reddit + Youtube gives me enough content to never really have to go anywhere else and it's actually starting to become real frustrating.

(I've actually forgot where I used to go, help!)

There is so much activity and content being constantly generated, but in the end I only end up consuming, not participating and basically being an internet couch potato. It's so easy to become one.
All of these new community hubs are solely focused on generating new content to retain (and expand) their user base, which means they suck something fierce when it comes to maintaining and archiving important topics and discussions so it just feels like I'm reading the same questions and answers every other week because I am.

Reddit in particular also feel very impersonal. Sure, there's usernames but the font is pretty small and it's never really brought to attention purposefully. Maybe that changed in the god awful new design, but I refuse to switch. At any rate, as a community, the actual sense of community is - to me at least - very lacking. I don't know these people and I never will, it's just a constant flow of users commenting while passing by. Also, since it is reddit, it doesn't help that the more popular communities are huge with thousands of members, again decreasing the chance of you recognizing someone unless their posts are constantly voted to the top.

Discord is another weird one. I basically agree with System11 here, it just ends up with a lot of island communities and has almost the opposite problems of reddit. Mostly being too small. And call me old fashioned, but I find Discord almost disorienting to use sometimes, despite what seems to be a simple enough idea. Like the idea of having rooms for different purposes and being told "you can't post links here, only in that other room" which feels really weird when it is just a fancily dressed chat room and we're chatting away and having to switch rooms to post a link relevant to the discussion is really inconvenient and just kills the flow. Oh and in a days time no one is going to understand the deal with that rogue link in the link section anyway since the context for it was posted in another room waay waaaay back in it's own timeline.

The only real good part with these modern communities is up to date, within the minute threads, sometimes insightful comments or TL:DR of important topics.
Oh, and the absolute massive amounts of memes.

Ironically the internet was more social before social media was a term and most people on it were nerds

I remember in college days, dial up, being on some IRC channel (either for software or anime) and private messaging w/ some guy that was absolutely elated that he had 5 private chats going at once.

Multiple convos going on during the MSN days (I'm a little younger 8) ) scared me off of chats for a long time (for good?). Set myself to invisible and that's the end of that.

Ah! the first decade of the internet. Halcyon days.

Uni: me and the boys were always carrying portable hard drives there to dld all kinds of shit, that was before broadband went mainstream of course, the uni already had fiber.
the teachs were so proud to see students eager to be in charge of attendance at the various depts offices and libraries lol.

Yeah, that's only partially surprising. Not the first time he's made a big deal of something then nothing happens.
