The E3 2019 thread.

Post by Specineff »

I feel this has been a particularly good E3, so maybe we should comment on our favorite parts and announcements. Post your highlights and thoughts here.

I'll start with the Panzer Dragoon remake :!: for Switch:

Konami joins the retro mini-console bandwagon with the TurboGrafx Mini, which seems to be able to play Super CD games as well?

Various random thoughts:

Bummed out that the Zelda game seems to be a direct sequel, but I guess when you develop a landscape of that size for a single-platform game, you've got to get your use out of it.

Luigi's Mansion 3 sounds.... interesting, but after reading Eurogamer's hands-on, I'm a little worried that they may have over-egged the elegant simplicity of the original. I didn't know the DS sequel was a 30+ hour game, it's a thin formula to stretch out for so long.

Secret of Mana 3 being out NOW is a huge surprise.

I played Commandos 2 a lot back in the day, a touch screen HD remaster is more than welcome.

FFVII looks stunning. Still not sure about the battle system, but the news that ATB makes an appearance of sorts has mollified me somewhat. Despite my reservations, nostalgia alone ensures this will be a day one for me.

Doom Eternal looks like more platformy monster arenas, so that's off the list, 2016 is a game I'm still surprised was so well-received, bar the gore moves it didn't really do anything Painkiller or Serious Sam hadn't done already, and the exploration aspect of the originals was barely present.

I'm also the one person I know still eagerly awaiting a glimpse of the new Intellivision.

My own highlights:
  • - Seiken Densetsu 3 officially in English, and it's already out. I have literally been waiting over 20 years for this.
  • - Dragon Quest in Smash. While I don't give a crap about Smash, I care about DQ making a push into Western popularity. Smash exposure helped for Fire Emblem, so excited to see where this will go, especially coming straight off a super high quality game.
  • - Not a huge surprise, but I'm excited for Romancing SaGa 3 in English
  • - Elden Ring. Basically anything From Software will make me excited, but this sounds very promising on its own, despite no gameplay being shown.
  • - A new Contra game. It's getting a to of hate for its PS2-like cheap graphics, but as long as it doesn't turn out to be some European outsourced fan garbage, it could potentially be pretty fun. I'm not disliking what I see.
  • - The new trailer and gameplay demonstration finally made me genuinely excited for the FF7 remake. Until now I didn't care at all, and the previous trailer was cringeworthy garbage. But this time they actually made the characters appear like they should, the voice acting wasn't as awful, and it feels like they really care bringing back the classic atmosphere of Midgar, rather than consorting to the anime stereotypes you see in most modern JRPGs and recent FF titles. Especially surprised they finally managed to get Tifa right. The gameplay also looks fun.
  • - New Platinum game looks cool
  • - A Zelda BOTW asset dump could be cool. The trailer makes it come across even more creepy than Majora, which is cool.

I weep for Commander Keen. At least the fans did make another trilogy that concluded the old story cliffhanger (somewhat).

Though there is one nice thing in that mobile game for the lore. You play as original Keen's kids. As in William "Blaze" Blazkowicz III. As in DOOMGUY. (inb4 Vorticon-Hellspawn war fanfics)

It's well-recieved because there aren't really many games like that coming out at all, especially when compared to endless CoD clones that became a standard for FPS genre. It might be just doing things that were done before with a new coat of paint but beggars ain't choosers.

But I do kinda worry for how the new game will turn out. I have a hunch they might make it "open world". Don't get me wrong, I love Hexen and all, but it's just something that's incredibly easy to screw up with modern game-making approach.

It's both. The English translation of the original game is a part of the "Mana Trilogy" out on the Switch eShop right now. It's a little expensive for three emulated games though. EDIT: Sorry, it's "Collection of Mana"...

On top of that, a remake is coming out some time in the future.
While it also loses a lot of the visual splendor of the original title, it doesn't look anywhere near as bad as the SoM remake: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_DaAa8h7A8
The crab boss honestly looks really close to what it did on SNES. The characters are a tad too "clean" looking.

Also the game is now officially titled "Trials of Mana". Not just the remake, this is the title they go by in the trilogy collection too.

Must admit I keep meaning to try out Witcher 3. Despite the inevitable visual downgrades, I think the Switch version might actually push me into it. It's a lot easier to start a BIG game knowing I've already got 5 lunch hours a week I can set aside.

But yeah, Cyberpunk looks awesome. So awesome in fact, that I'm pondering how on earth it's supposed to run on the PS4/XB0.

I only caught some of the MS conference. Mostly it just made me want to destroy capitalism, but I did get super hyped from the Elden Ring tease.

I'm also looking forward to Cyberpunk. I haven't seen much of the game itself that make it stand out (or at all tbf) but having just been on a wild ride with the Witcher 3 I feel like it's definitely one I want to keep an eye on.

Most excited about Seiken Densetsu III finally getting not one, but two official English releases and Final Fantasy VIII getting a remaster.

Those were the news anyway, everything else was pretty much as expected.

No More Heroes 3! Might be fun. Shame Grasshopper no longer seem to be working with Masafumi Takada. His soundtracks really made so many of their games. Wonder who he pissed off?

Not much of interest to me, although it was nice to see that Hollow Knight Silksong is playable on the show floor. I'm terrible at it, but I think Hollow Knight is one of the best games I've played in the last few years.

Switch is getting some nice looking stuff this year - Link's Awakening, a very interesting Fire Emblem (taking cues from Shadows of Valentia rather than Awakening/Fates), Astral Chain looks classic Platinum, Daemon x Machina massively improved from the demo, Mario Maker 2 has a full single player mode a la 3DS Mario Maker, sneaky Secret of Mana compilation, Final Fantasy VIII... and probably more I've missed in the monsoon of titles announced. Panzer Dragoon!

Gears 5 finally as well, always nice to have a bit of no-nonsense dumb action. Doom Eternal I'm less sure about, as 50% of what I've seen reminds me of those awful final stretches of Half-Life. No to platforming, yes to demon killing spree. I'm hoping it's a bit less "go into arena, kill until demon spawns stop, move to next arena, repeat". The 2016 game got the action but, from the original, missed the atmosphere and tension of exploring, not knowing what's round the next corner or what's about to pop out behind you. Hearing growls and doors opening, low on ammo and health. Original Doom was just incredible the first few playthroughs.

So the permanent backlog continues...

2020 is shaping up nicely too. Next gen on the horizon, don't care about 8K (or 4K... I have a small living room, I can only take a TV so big whilst still being able to see the whole screen at once!) but hell yes to massively improved load times and a bit more grunt to get modern engines running smoothly. Games on my 2010 mid range graphics card look and run better than most of current gen titles, so an improvement there beyond MOAR PIXELS is still something worthwhile.

It's really difficult to balance that action with scary atmosphere tho-
... Oh no I just remembered how tense Bioshock once felt to me.

like their trailer ~ 1 year ago, and the 45+ min gameplay footage they released, it's hard to imagine this trailer was running at anything less than top-tier PC hardware @ 4k.
In CD Projekt RED's defense, all the Witcher games are extremely well optimized.

Despite having never played the tabletop games, the atmosphere and environment I've seen depicted in the footage encompass so many aspects of Gibson's, PKD's , and Stephenson's
writing, more specifically: what I imagine when reading.., that my excitement and hype has morphed into sentimentality of an abstraction I've constructed and an expectation that's impossible to merit.

The new game from Mikami's studio looks interesting, difficult to tell without actual gameplay. Ghost Wire: Tokyo I think it's called. There were some rumblings about The Evil Within 3 but after the disappointment of the last game I'm not too bothered.

Shame there wasn't anything much from Capcom, I was hoping for a RE3 remake or Dinocrisis teaser.

There was an unvailing of one of those 1-up arcade machines running the three original Atari Star Wars games. I'm not much of a fan of those cabs but these had the proper yoke controllers.

And I actually thought Respawns Star Wars game looked ok. Reading some impressions it sounds like the combat might actually be good for once for a game featuring lightsabers.

That's about the only positive sign I can see in it. The build on these machines has been total crap, every single one of them. If there's any hope of them doing that fancy controller properly, price has to go up.

I marvel that they're even still in business, with every one of their garbage entries getting clearanced out of Walmart, one by one..

lol, so $499.99.

Price is probably $50 more because of the controller, and another $150 is going to Disney. They are absolutely using the cheapest materials possible.

I haven't used one, but my first thought was that the controller would be utter garbage. I played the sit-down recently and was surprised at how sturdy and heavy it really is.

Did uh... the VR fad burn out? We're all on cell phone games at the hip new happening thing, right?

I sometimes want to make a thread here about the Remako mod for Final Fantasy 7, but it doesn't feel like a big enough deal to bring it up. GANs themselves have a lot of promise - the website This Person Does Not Exist should convince anyone of that. But in this one example, all it does is make the art prettier.

I don't think VR is a fad, it may not have penetrated to quite the degree hoped, but as the tech slowly comes down in price it's definitely here to stay. Shit, a VR games even managed to top the charts here last week.

I'm admittedly biased on the subject since I work with VR stuff, but if you get a chance, go try out an Oculus Quest. I think getting rid of the dependencies on wires and the need for a high end computer is going to do a lot to move VR forward. That said, VR still has a long way to go before it truly becomes a mainstream technology.

Hell yes to more DQ exposure. I'm debating grabbing the Switch version when I get another Switch and playing it all over again for the extra content.

SaGa franchise is underrated, change my mind. Not really aimed at you of course, just memeing. It's unfortunate that it will be digital only but I would still rather see it than not. Reminds me I need to make sure and get the remake of the 2nd.

From b o i s let's getttt it.

Will have to look up the last two. I paid basically no attention to E3 when it happened, which is why I just opened this thread to get the highlights essentially.
