He was friends with Moebius & Jean Gireaud. There are several scenes that are taken from Moebius' works. If you know Arzach, you should also know where Nausicaa's mehve comes from, too. Otomo and other mangaka from that generation were deeply influenced by the French authors.

Aside BG, Nausicaa inspired a certain Nazca/SNK series. You just need to check again the scenes with the tank (especially one in which the tank goes over a bridge) to see why this is the case.

I am pretty sure that several other Ghibli movies feature animated homages to Moebius' work. Him and Jean Gireaud were apparently very keen some of their ideas being put in motion (or, more accurately, animation).

Once you also begin to consider how Moebius directly shaped western SF cornerstones (say, Blade Runner, Tron), you can easily appreciate his enormous cultural influence.
Chomsky, Buckminster Fuller, Yunus and Glass would have played Battle Garegga, for sure.

Shin = A highly entertaining project meant to rehabilitate militarism in the popular consciousness while building support for revising a constitution that doesn't technically allow for a military.

(seriously, Shin is pretty awesome but you might want to start with some of the Heisei movies and/or the original first to better appreciate how Shin takes on the formula)

It would take a lot to get me to see it considering how terrible Godzilla 2014 was. Like, I thought Skykid was exaggerating when ripping on it, but if anything he was too gentle.

I'm OK with Shin, but some major aspects of it were already covered in Godzilla 2000, which was ultimately more enjoyable (mainly due to the fight with Orga). I'd definitely watch the '54 film first, unless you can't stand black & white movies.

The acting was abysmal. Not sure what I expected though. The most unbelievable part (including the entire premise of a nuclear lizard going ape shit) was the "American" girl and her amazing English.

I still have an unopened blu ray of Godzilla 2000. Really need to get on that (and my other unwatched Goji films). Going to the annual G-Fest this year to see GMK: Giant Monsters All Out Attack in theaters. I haven't seen it, but people tell me it's a damn good one.

My sis's fiance got me to watch The Thing (2011) with him. He's been begging me to do this with him for years, because he really likes this movie. And the original, at least. :|

I think more credit needs to be given to this prequel. It pioneered, years before Star Wars, the "I CLAPPED! I CLAPPED WHEN I SAW IT!" and "THESE ARE THINGS I KNOW!" cinematic techniques.
Look! There's that axe that was against the wall! That's how it GOT THERE!!!!
Wait! That's the two-faced monster!!!!!!
Blood tests! Crawling limbs! IT'S ALL HERE!!!!!

So this movie broke new ground.

And this fucking lol-level of special effects. Shit. Pass the bleach.

Indeed, the 'American girl' character in Shin was cringe-worthy to the extreme. Other than that I thought the acting was decent for a Japanese film, where overacting is de rigueur. You've got to give the production team props for the constructing a huge animatronic puppet.

-

I saw Godzilla: King of the Monsters last night and it was pretty bad. I guess my main complaint is that the pacing was off. Instead of a slow and steady buildup to all out destruction we get a quick start with a bloated and slow middle section before a decent finale. It redeemed itself a bit at the end but not enough to wash away some of the weird choices they made. There were just too many human charters and not enough kaiju action in heavily populated areas (Antarctica?! are you fucking kidding me?!). They probably should have stuck with just two or three monsters. There's also some pretty obvious pandering to Chinese audiences which I guess is just the way things are now with big budget Hollywood movies.

Probably still worth seeing for the Godzilla fan but keep you expectation in check.

Just saw Dark Phoenix. To be honest, I think the movie gets too much hate. I thought it was okay, not good or bad. Just okay. And I actually prefer this over The Last Stand.

Snowpiercer

Pretty weird. Other than the ridiculous premise and lack of evidence of motivation by the antagonists, some not so bad parts. Still, hard to get over most of it. Tilda was the best thing, unsurprisingly.

That sounds like it'd be pretty fun. I wonder how much stage blood they'd be willing to spill everywhere. I mean, that stuff is slippery.

I watched a couple movies with the Ninja Turtles, the first one from 1990 and the new Batman vs. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. I enjoyed both quite a bit. I have been reading the mirage comics and quite a bit of the 1990 movie was taken from them, though with different turtles in some scenes. Splinter have same voice actor as Elmo!

Not a lot.

Most of it ends up on the actors. Or the audience.

Very strategically plotted out.

Strategery.

I really liked that one - it's incredibly strange, almost Gilliam-esque.

I watched "I Am Mother" over the weekend on Netflix, it's pretty good. In fact a lot of these "Netflix presents" etc are well above average. Bang for the buck it's one of the best services I subscribe to.

Kindergarten Cop: **1/2

I don't think this movie knew what it was supposed to be. It starts out as a cop drama, turns into a "fish out of water" comedy when Schwarzenegger's tough guy cop has to go undercover as a Kindergarten teacher to protect a child from his drug-dealer father, and suddenly in the third act turns back into a police drama, and along the way throws in a few scenes that are just plain bizarre.

According to the Wikipedia article, the leading role was originally intended for Bill Murray. Not quite sure how that would have worked out.

The initial scenes where Arnold is this badass cop completely in his element when surrounded by murderous gangsters (I like my car) was an intentional comedic contrast to the later scenes where dealing with a classroom full of kindergartners causes him to have a nervous breakdown (SHUUUUUT UUUUUP!!!)

Murray would have been interesting in that role.

I tried to watch Incredibles 2. I fell asleep for 25-30 minutes at one point but I got the gist of the movie.

Doctor Sleep is getting a movie adaptation http://youtu.be/2msJTFvhkU4

Ugh...the trailer doesn't translate the book's typical 'King' vibe by any means, and the actors seem very miscasted.

Also unnecessary exaggerated insertions of The Shining fan service * sigh * well the book itself is clearly a sequel for fans, nothing outstanding, still it's not relying entirely on references to the original book to justify its plot, so that trailer is clearly whoring.

I predict it will rank at the bottom end of S.King film adaptations.

Having finished the book recently I think I have an inkling why the author isn't supportive of Kubrick's adaptation. Outside the readership the only way PR knows to rile up the oh-so-sensitive I-peeps to give a spank is to splice blinks from the film to remind the target groups they once turned from the screen because of anticipation and not to fondle their gimmicks. Agreed, it's crude as cuss. Buuut this is 2019. No time for subtlety, Hank! Roll 'em over with the bus! Since it's not called Shine2: 30Y Later.

Watching Ray close out the 35th anniversary at Ghost Fest, was kind of horrified to realize I didn't remember the real words to the song anymore. I blame Youtube for forcing me to watch the remix ~7 times every day.

Googled to see if there was anything on a Three Amigos 2 because I can't remember if that's really going to be a thing or just something I made up (can you blame me?). A bit depressed to see it's unpopular with the masses.

While reading Dreamcatcher, it really didn't seem like the thing that would have gotten published if not for who the author was.

Sobriety and pain hasn't helped his writing in these later years. The back half of The Dark Tower really doesn't build to a climax - it's more of a list of random things that happen. Like a Family Guy episode? (One particularly surreal example, for those of you who didn't read this stuff - King put in a sequence where the bad guys try to murder Stephen King with a van in order to destroy The Dark Tower. Yes, he inserted his real-life trauma into his magnum opus. No, I am not making this up.)

The last thing I read from the Kings was the insert on the jacket cover of the book he wrote with his son. Something about cocoon women? It didn't convince me to read the book.

Samurai Rebellion / Jouiuchi (1967)
Another slow burn samurai film from Kobayashi Masaki, this time starring Toshiro Mifune. Not quite as cinematic as Harakiri but beautiful nonetheless. The quality in choreography I find to have improved quite a bit. The cast is made up of many of his usual collaborators, including Tatsuya Nakadai in a supporting role. Fun fact, they had TV drama versions in both 1992 & 2013.

Le Mystere Koumiko / The Koumiko Mystery (1965)
A documentary (of sorts) by Chris Marker. While shooting the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the narrator (Marker) interviews Kumiko, a beautiful Manchurian born, French educated Japanese. Being herself somewhat of a stranger in a strange land, she shares with him her thoughts on then modern day Japan. For anyone that has followed urban photography in Japan for the last 50 years or actually just watched how quickly Japan changes, unsurprisingly the city is almost unrecognizable. Also unsurprisingly, many of the questions raised in this video essay could be asked today, over half a decade later.

This was a real treat. First, I doubt any "good" versions of this exist anywhere. I'm assuming it was shot on 16mm with no sync'ed audio track, a la San Soleil. With no wide release, one can only imagine what conditions the original film is left in. (All presumptions on my part). You can see the whole thing with it's original subtitles burned into the film on Youtube. However, this looks like it was sourced from a well-aged VHS cassette or other magnetic format. There are other places with it where you can overlay an accompanying subtitles file which will give your eyes a bit of a rest. The audio on mine only came from the right channel which further irked me but I got over it.

Somewhat intrigued as to whether Kumiko Muraoka was a real person with any background, I googled a bit once the plane had landed. Sure enough, what she's portrayed as is indeed true. If one Googles her name w/ the "improper" romanization found in the title of the film, there is an interview with her daughter where we learn she was a writer (of sorts?) and had twin daughters. I found this to be quite an interesting follow up to such a hidden gem.
