Save the XP era doujin games!

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

Just a thought I've been rolling around.
So, a LOT of the indie/doujin (call em whatever you like) games from around 2007ish are missing.

I was wondering if some of the old guns around here would be willing to pool our files somehow and make a repository for those of us still willing to spin up an XP machine or play in WINE when possible.
I've got around 20 or so not including Kenta Cho's (easily obtainable) work...

I'm not suggesting we host licensed games illegally.
I just miss all the freeware games that got me into the genre 12 or so years ago.
What a ride it's been!

So many memories unreachable with doujin game hosting.

EDIT: The Staging folder is here, you can drop your games off and I'll move it over later to a more permanent folder.
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

The main repository is here (after I move games from Staging)

I like this. I’ll see if I have anything of interest when I get home - I fell down this rabbit hole briefly then fell out when few of them would run on my modern machine.

A couple weeks ago in the discord Despache was talking about pooling patches as many of the site closures have made those unavailable as well. I’ve got a handful of those too if there’s any interest in letting the scope of this creep a bit.

Unfortunately when you try to grab a game from a doujin author's site 7/8 of the time it's a dead link.
The web is an absolutely horrid way to archive data.

People stop paying for their websites and we lose a lot of shooting history.

Look at the original Shmup-Dev.
Years worth of competition grade games wiped out. (Nearly all *my* games.)
There was no github back then. We programmers backed up all our own files, then gradually lost them in machine upgrades and disk failures.
The online websites sure as hell didn't hold.

Well, I'll leave the *how* of this project up for opinions I suppose.

I consider work to create a 100% accurate Wine experience essential. Even Cho Ren Sa 68K still has problems in Wine.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

I've recently found that suddenly Warning Forever doesn't work in wine 4.x. :(

Would a Google Drive be a good solution folks? :?:

Definitely.

I should still have some games somewhere in my NAS. Just create a google drive and give write permissions to selected members.

I think you can also remove the permission to erase files to members.

Pretty sure I have at least one build of Warning Forever and Eden's Aegis, Cho Ren Sha 68K, and Hydorah, but I'll need to check the version numbers.

I'll look around, but I probably burned games from the XP period to rewritable discs, and I don't know if they'll still be readable.

Ok, here is what I have.
You can hopefully download these.

I'll create a second folder which people can drop things into and I'll move into the main directory. (This prevents people from wiping out all the games)

Many shmups are still available on vector.co.jp:
Dan Da Dan: https://www.vector.co.jp/soft/dl/win95/ ... 89976.html
Demolition Gunner: http://www.interq.or.jp/saturn/takuhama/Shooting6.html links to https://www.vector.co.jp/soft/dl/winnt/ ... 13422.html
EdensAegis1.11: https://www.vector.co.jp/soft/dl/winnt/ ... 42605.html
EdensEdge1.31: https://www.vector.co.jp/download/file/ ... 48476.html

etc

Of course there's no Gwange.

Vector is a HUGE back up of freeware softwares.
There are many shmups available on freem too: https://www.freem.ne.jp/win/category/2

For those not skilled enough to browse japanese pages it's not that easy to locate.

Maybe a page in english with links to every shmup maybe useful.

Here is the staging folder link.

Drop your stuff there then update the thread here and I'll get it moved over. 8)
Please, do not put commercially protected games in there.

I have no clue if what I have is commercially protected, so I'll just dump what I have there (I'll make my own folder so it doesn't get mixed up with others) so you can check and then move what you think is ok to the main folder.

Many thanks for these. I failed to find quite a few of them while I've been looking recently.

Just a thought. Some of these developers have still-active websites and the games are easy to find, it would be a shame to hurt any doujin/indie dev. Of the top of my head: Genetos, Hydorah, Kenta Cho's, x_x games (Blue Wish _, Eden's _; in Japanese but clear-ish links, borderline).

I have a folder of freeware stuff, but very limited internet. I'll have to see how this develops for now.

EDIT: Interesting link with freem. Most of the site is translated, but need 'premium' to sort the ~150 'danmaku' by popularity! It'd be tough to find the good ones (and I've not had much luck with applocale-type software).

Maybe we should make it policy to include a link to the developer's website. :)
I understand what you mean. We want people to continue visiting their websites of course...

I just gathered a bunch of shmups I had. Should all be free/shareware (and work on Windows 2000). I don't like google drive very much so someone else can re-upload there if they feel like it.

http://www.hyakushiki.net/shmup/filename

where filename would be one of these:

sengokuyou.7z (31MB)
finalboss.7z (5MB)
epicshooter.7z (53MB)
erstkerf.7z (18MB)
defendersofavalon.7z (43MB)
reflex.7z (91MB)
zillionbeatz.7z (28MB)
yalkinastg.7z (1.1MB)
xed102.7z (1.9MB)
xaklogian.7z (24MB)
volcabamba.7z (1.5MB)
ultimatestage.7z (1MB)
twinseeds.7z (39MB)
fuckspace.7z (1.4MB)
adlerzone.7z (250KB)
chaosstream.7z (900KB)
mbs_v11.zip (40MB)

that last one is probably Magical Broom Shooting which was already there for some reason

Added Peposoft's MinishoterRS⊿ and GR3 Project's GR3 and GR3 Re-Death. GR3 Project's site went down a long time ago (the people aren't gone though, they're better known as Nigoro now), but fortunately Archive.org has a backup, not of the site itself, but of a site where someone had hosted a dump of the site.

Before I download any of these, will they work on Windows 10 or do I need XP?

Haven't tried them all, but all the ones I recognize work on Windows 10.

Many of the links seem broken.

@Pixel_Outlaw:
Tried downloading the new "XP" folder, but after ~1 hr the DL link was still only 25% ready. Any chance you can list the contents individually?
EDIT: OK, my mistake. Have to click on the name, not the icon.

Is Star Shooter Maximum 2010 already in the repository? Doesn't seem so.

And by the way, is there something you can do to get rid of the screen tearing or sprite sync issues in Multi Media Fusion games (like that one)?

There is one I'm looking for that I can find for the life of me.

It was a small window where you simply grazed 1 pixel enemy shots to fire back at some boss.
Each level had a different series of bullet emitters. I think everything was just gradient circles.
It was mouse controlled.

It was like fuze...su... or something...
