FM mod on Power Base Converter
FM mod on Power Base Converter
So I remember reading somewhere that it is possible to do the FM mode on a Power Base Converter, however, I cannot seem to find any information on it anywhere. Does anyone here have any experience with this? Any information would be helpful.

Or get a Mega SG and enjoy FM sound without a converter.
Re: FM mod on Power Base Converter
Yea, the only problem with that is that you can't play card games or use the 3D glasses. Same with the Mega Sg for the 3D glasses, but I only use that on my flatscreen anyway. I'd like to be able to get rid of my SMS if I could somehow have this mod done to the PBC.Lawfer wrote:Just get this instead:jamon1567 wrote:So I remember reading somewhere that it is possible to do the FM mode on a Power Base Converter, however, I cannot seem to find any information on it anywhere. Thank you so much! I'll pass this on to my modder, but from the looks of it, I think this is what we were looking for.Specineff wrote:I found these pieces of info, they may be useful to you:

Re: FM mod on Power Base Converter
Wanted to bump this topic because my modder and I were never able to figure out how to do this. I just resigned myself to keeping my SMS and going that route, but I'd like to consolidate some space (both in shelf space and on my scart switch) in my setup by getting rid of that and using the Power Base Converter. Was hoping maybe someone out there either has performed this mod before and would be open to doing it again, knows someone who has done this mod and could perform it, or just generally has any further information. Thanks!
Re: FM mod on Power Base Converter
jamon1567,
The SMSFM version 2.0 and later (2012+) can plug into either the expansion port or the cartridge port. It works the same either way.
Go to the SMSFM page and scroll about three quarters of the way down till you see the heading Solder Version. There's a diagram there which shows which of the pins need to actually be connected. Just wire the necessary pins to the SMS cartridge connector. Connect the audio output to the two audio input pins. If your version of the Mega Drive has 75 ohm resistors connected to ground, the audio may be a bit low. The easiest way to solve this is to replace the audio termination resistors inside the Mega Drive with a higher value (try 470 ohms).
Note that the Mega Drive doesn't have a KILLG# signal. This required by a couple of games for to detect the FM board (Wonder Boy 3 is one of them). The way around this is to run a patched version on a flash cartridge.

Re: FM mod on Power Base Converter
Many thanks! I'll pass this along to my modder and hopefully get this solved once and for all.
