R-TYPES JP vs US
Hey guys,
I've been playing recently R-Types JP region for the PS1. RT2 is a bloody hell
I remember having played the US board and was a tad easier
Anyone could confirm if the US release of R-Types is based on the World/US board?
Thanks in advance!

Re: R-TYPES JP vs US
I'm not sure which board R-Types is based on, but something that probably is relevant is that it that runs at 60hz, where as the original arcade game runs at 55hz. Everything is therefore over 9% faster on R-Types.

I can't remember the differences, but like the poster above me said, the main difference is the ~10% speed increase. Also the vertical scrolling is annoying on the PS1 version. I'd stick to 55 hz arcade version if you can. But there's no way around it, R-Type 2 is a bastard no matter how you slice it.

Thanks guys,
In the RTypes JP you can see the JP warning screen (only use in Japan) at the beggining
This screen has been removed in the US release. Probably the same port w/o the warning

Re: R-TYPES JP vs US
I have the US release of R-Types, and it is the same as the JP release -- which is to say, R-Type II on both discs is based on the JP version of the game. And yes, the JP version is slightly harder than World/USA version.
Re: R-TYPES JP vs US
I used to have JP version of R-types, and I was never able to clear loop 1 on R-type, while I can clear the 1st loop on PCB board with no problems.
Then I got the EU version, and cleared loop 1 on first try.
So yeah, stick with the EU version - or PCB/Mame

Isn't it too slow at 50hz?MJR wrote:I used to have JP version of R-types, and I was never able to clear loop 1 on R-type, while I can clear the 1st loop on PCB board with no problems.

It is, but it's also too fast at 60hz.Sir Arthur ahf wrote:Isn't it too slow at 50hz?MJR wrote:I used to have JP version of R-types, and I was never able to clear loop 1 on R-type, while I can clear the 1st loop on PCB board with no problems.

The PAL version will only be running 50hz (and letterboxed) which is probably why it's "easier" than the Japanese release.MJR wrote:I used to have JP version of R-types, and I was never able to clear loop 1 on R-type, while I can clear the 1st loop on PCB board with no problems.

I've been playing R-Type and 2 in shmupmame so that is an option as well.
The sprites can look janky sometimes but the framerate is accurate and also minimal input lag. Makes the game a lot easier to play as compared to R-Types.
