There are too many good ones out there. It's hard to label one as "the best ever". Thunder Force, Darius, Gradius, R-Type are just a few of my favorites. I would really love to see a new Thunder Force title. Or even a new Darius game would be awesome.
Right now my favorite horizontal shmup is Border Down (DC). One of the best horizontals I've ever played.

I think it can be safely said that everyone on this board needs to lighten the fuck up.
I'm a vert guy through and through, but there are a few horis I like. I've always liked Last Resort. When it first came out the graphics destroyed all shooters I had seen up to that point and it was really the first game that pissed me off. Imagine standing in line at the local Mexican restaurant wailing away at the first boss only to have some douchebag 4 year old dead leg you just bad enough that your concentration breaks and you get smited like a little bitch.
R-Type Leo has the distinction of being the only R-Type game I don't want to see recalled and burned. Slightly faster than most R-Types, with a bit less of the memorization. Great graphics too.
Right now I'm plowing through Fire Mustang on the Genesis. I can get to level 3 without dying, but damned if I can get further than that. More practice is necessary.
Darius Gaiden deserves a mention. Good speed, good weapons, great boss design. Tell me that first level boss isn't awesome! Even if he is a total wuss...
*EDIT*
Yeah, kind of forgot to add this. of all those I think Last Resort is my favorite. Don't ask me why, because I have no clue.

I like Super Nova quite a bit so far, but I want to play it more before I decide it's one of my favorites or not. I almost got G-Darius, but the EB games I went to only had the case for the game, not the game itself. Also, I went there looking for older games becuase the store directory said it had all these older games there. It didn't have a single game that the store directory listed. Lame.

No no, the "troll" stuff is that suddenly we got lots of newcomers appearing (Nothing against it, after all, one day I was also a newcomer
), and all of them starting new threads... and this is happening at the same time that we got threads like "What's the best tree in a shmup" and stuff.....
That's not direct to you though, as this thread wasn't half bad as some others that have been appearing.
I hope I am not sounding too much elitist now

Yeah, G Darius is pretty cool. I wouldn't mind another Darius release someday, but I doubt it will happen after so many years...
I love Dragon Breed too, anyone else a fan of that one? It does suffer from memorization disease like most irem stuff, but style-wise it definately rocks!

Oh, yeah! I happen to have a non-working Saint Dragon bootleg board. I didn't know it was a bootleg when I bought it, unfortunately. One day I'd love to get it working again... There are quite a few dragon-based shmups, but I think these two are the only horizontal ones. Vertical we have Dragon Spirit, Dragon Saber, and Dragon Blaze.

Gradius V. Blazing Star. G.Darius. Pulstar.
Four-way tie. :/

But yeah, wouldn't mind another arcade Darius at all.

The PSP is the perfect screen size for a Darius game...don't you think?dboeren wrote:Yeah, G Darius is pretty cool. I wouldn't mind another Darius release someday, but I doubt it will happen after so many years...

I'd have to say Gradius V stole the crown from R-Type Delta last year.
System11's random blog, with things - and stuff!

I find myself playing a lot of Gradius V, Einhander, and Tumiki Fighters lately.
I used to be all into R-Type Delta but i'm just mad at it now. Stupid Stage 5 boss pisses me off BAD. I always get point blanked and i can't stand that.
I don't get what's so good about hyper duel.
Thunder Force IV is another favorite of mine.

Horis
Border Down - a perfect mix of the old and the new.
OldSkool Mind Mapping and new scoring mechanics.
I simply don't think enough people have put this game through its paces.
Ps. No-one ever mentions Arcade Hellfire, either the 1P or the 2P version - Excellent thumping Toaplan Soundtrack and the 1 Player version (PCB not console) was a fair challenge to 1CC.
