Bad Game Party

Post by PFG 9000 »

For years I've been wanting to host a Bad Game Party. Basically I would have all my nerd friends over and we would have a tournament of sorts, but only using shitty games. The point would be to force those who inexplicably call me a friend to put in some time on terrible games, giving us a few laughs at the expense of said shitty games, and each other. Of course alcohol would be involved. I want to stick to consoles, so unfortunately that Big Rigs Racing game with the embarrasing clipping is out. I also want to avoid emulation. I have no problem spending money on a few new bad games - after all, I have a complete Jaguar collection. I have most mainstream consoles and lots of 2nd tier ones, so just about anything is fair game.

I haven't put much thought into it beyond that. The games don't actually have to be bad, just easy to make fun of. Cheesy dialogue, goofy premise, etc. I'm considering incorporating a few from this list:

E.T. (Atari 2600)
Mickey's Safari in Letterland (NES)
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (Genesis)
Shaq Fu (Genesis)
Wirehead (Sega CD)
Night Trap (Sega CD or PS4)
Steam Hearts (PC Engine)
Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon (CDI)
Club Drive (Jaguar)
Checkered Flag (Jaguar)
Kasumi Ninja (Jaguar)
Highlander (Jaguar CD)
Superman 64 (N64)
Tomb Raider: the Angel of Darkness (PS2)
Castle Shikigami II (PS2)
Ninjabread Man (Wii)
Deadly Premonition (PS3)
Burger King trilogy (Xbox 360)
Ride to Hell: Retribution (Xbox 360)

Has anybody here done anything similar? Or can you recommend some truly terrible games? Can you think up of a format for a challenge from any bad games (for example, "fly through as many rings as possible in the first stage of Superman 64")?

I nominate Castle Shikigami 2 because of its English voiceover. The gameplay is good so maybe that disqualifies it.

Sounds like a fun time! :D

Where's the shiki defence force when you need it?

Play Evergrace 2/Forever Kingdom or Spriggan Lunar Verse if you want a hell of a shit party.

Any one of the Earth Defense Force games would for the bill. Also Metal Wolf Chaos, although that's not so much a bad game as a ridiculously over the top one. There's supposed to be a remaster version coming in mid 2019.

I challenge any of you to play The Flash without wanting to tear your hair out.

My personal pick for the worst port of Street Fighter II.

And there's no need to perpetuate the "E. T. is bad" myth when others have found far worse on the system.

I actually like it, but I've always found the original Street Fighter raises many a chuckle when beer and friends are involved.

Accidentally one-shotting Sagat in the final stage is always fun.

As someone that's 1CC'ed the original Street Fighter and no-missed every boss at least once, I maintain that it's an entertaining game, if nothing else. "Ohhhl lite!"

Another potential addition: "C'mon, Sega, this is a family game."

Is Checkered [sic] Flag on the Jaguar really that bad? I remember it got decent reviews back in the day, as did Shaq Fu.

Play Shadow of the Beast without a walkthrough and see how often you get stuck from not picking something up or using the wrong item. Or straight up making the mistake of going to the right at the start of the game.

Seconding Street Fighter. It's so terrible, awful collision detection and I have no idea what the conditions are for having the damn thing read inputs consistently. But the garbled speech and accidental dragon punch instant wins give it solid party appeal.

Strike Gunner on the SNES. Play it on normal. See how long it is before you get bored as fuck.

The Cyber Shinobi for the SMS. You get to kick a bulldozer in the face. And fall down about a hundred surprise pit traps.

Ai Cho Aniki is always worth a good chuckle. It's not a horrible game, but it's really not a good one either.

50 Cent: Blood On the Sand: It's a Gears of War wannabe'ish cover shooter, but every enemy can be insta-killed with a cinematic melee attack that you are invincible when executing. It's a broken blast, and features 50 Cent. Obviously.

Final Zone II and Last Alert on the TurboGrafx CD have some really tasty dubs... this is sure to get some laughs out of you guys.

If you gotta pick one I'd say get Last Alert, since it's actually fun to play. And the dialogue's insane level of botched amateur performance is really a delight

Final Zone II cover art is l33t tho. A couple embarassing songs in there too. The game is all around bad

ET is a good game.

I suggest learning how to play it, and after everyone mutters "what is this shit I hope Spielberg dies of cancer" you give them a tutorial and demonstration of how it was Metal Gear before we had Metal Gear.

Then they'll stop being your friend. Is good plan, maybe?

Make sure their is alchohol at the party also Hidden Invasion on ps2 is hilarious. Also Castle Shiki.2 is worth playing even though the game is good it's just too funny.

Super Pitfall, and the game that was planned to be marketed as its sequel in the US, Atlantis no Nazo both fit the bill.

Make My Video: Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch

Substitute that for ET. Also, learn how to play ET and quit bitchin that it "sucks" because you suck at it.

No topic like this is complete without Action 52 and Cheethmen II.

While not the worst port of the game, the DOS port of Donkey Kong has a badly drawn DK and a hilariously off key rendition of the "How high can you get?" theme.

I also agree ET isn't as bad as it is made out to be, especially considering the short development time.

It always taken me a few minutes to acclimatise, but I can pull off the specials in SF pretty consistently. I have trouble with the Dragon Punch at times, but bear in mind that's on the Xbox and PSP d-pads.

And people, please stop it with the 'ET isn't that bad' stuff. It sucks and not even in a funny way. My friends would beat the shit out of my if I tried to force them to play that.

Even the arcade version has dated poorly, never mind the SNES.... might have to fire that up for amusement value tonight.

Ultraman Towards the Future on SNES (Or any 16-bit Ultraman game), and Superman for Atari 2600, which is only slightly better than Superman 64.

Also, Jaleco's execrable Hachoo! for the arcade.

What's even more shocking is that the GB version actually plays much smoother.

One of my favorite so bad that it's good video games is Guardians of the Hood. I don't usually drink when I play video games, but booze goes good with this one. Trust me on this one.
There was a time, in the era of great chaos, when the Earth and the moon were at war with each other. A daredevil from the moon piloted a bizarre aircraft. It was feared, and because of its shape, called... Einhander.
