I haven't seen the Azkaban movie yet, but I have seen the first two movies and they both had some major lines/scenes cut from the book. From what I heard, Azkaban is missing scenes from the book to the point where someone would be confused if they hadn't read the book. Not that the book doesn't have its share of silly stuff (some of which I find makes it more enjoyable). The book is actually my favorite of the ones I read so far, but I'm not sure if I want to see the rest of the movies after reading a few of the books.Ajora wrote:The Prisoner of Azkaban. I'm glad the Harry Potter series has taken an appropriately darker and more violent tone, but the problem is that doing so makes all of the slapstick humor and kooky characters seem all the more jarring. And at this point, I'm completely sick of Harry's relatives. Gah, they're annoying. It's the best in the series thus far, but I'm still waiting for these movies to completely drop the silly bits altogether. Here's hoping.

It took me long to see this essential one. A powerful film. I was not in awe with the movie while watching, but later, when I was narrating the story to someone, it came down to me how many brilliant moments it has.
Nor is Forrest Gump.

The beef I have is not with someone's thinking what those are or are not about; it's with the sort of people who tend to like them best. Same with nationalisms and fundamentalisms - I'd rather keep those who flock to such things at bay. Just not my kind of company.

Just think what Lynch would say of you watching Eraserhead, for the first time no less, on a laptop screen on a plane.GaijinPunch wrote:Yeah, I know. I'll get there. FWIW, I've not wanted to watch it until I can give it the time it deserves (and not on an airplane -- at least a domestic leg). Those opportunities are few and far between these days I'm afraid. This reminds me of Arrested Development's complete roasting of The Blind Side, very cathartic.Obiwanshinobi wrote:I've a problem not so much with the film itself, as with the sentimentality it evokes in its most ardent enthusiasts (same with Forrest Gump the film and Flowers for Algernon the book). The vast majority of mass market entertainment is cartoon fantasy fluff, but the smug ego stroking crap is especially insufferable. Regardless if its a pandering movie to sedate a mind away from conflict in the real world, or the presenters at Blizzard Convention telling the gamers in the crowd they're better than researchers trying to cure cancer.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Fun Fact: I watched Eraserhead and other movies from Lynch available at the time (1993/1994) when I was 12/13. My parents did not believe in filtering content for their children (read: they were too lazy to check age-appropriate material for me and the sisters). I mean, my father once gave me Howard Chaykin's Black Kiss to read, because he couldn't be bothered to buy Disney stuff and the like.
Maybe he was very considerate of me, after all.

Chomsky, Buckminster Fuller, Yunus and Glass would have played Battle Garegga, for sure.
Re: i can't talk over the phone
The gal surprised me with her reaction for her first time Eraserhead.
It was the last piece of a string of Lynch over maybe a week and I could tell that it had worn her a little thin after Lost Highway.
So I prepared myself for a whole lot of a-bitching.
And there was none.
Deep into the vortex and she had fun! Jack Nance's faces made her laugh and she even thought the baby was funny.
It was almost as pleasantly disturbing as parts of the experience itself.
Go figure!

I saw Greta last night. Mostly boring, never goes far enough/crazy enough to be a fun b movie and doesn’t deserve the R rating it has. Fingers crossed Ma will be more fun.

Captain Marvel
Less of a origin story than usual for the genre (the protagonist begins as already special among the elite Kree special forces, and recovers to an epic power level), with unusually non-psychotic and relatively nonviolent characters. Well written and surprisingly integrated (maybe too much, with unexpected variants to the traditional background) into the general plot of Marvel cinecomics. The powers of Captain Marvel, which are the keystone of the whole plot, are very well managed; Kree and Skrull technology, from starship escape pods that fall apart under normal operating conditions to bullshit user interfaces, is much less convincing and often silly.

Coraline (2009)
Creepy as fuck stop-motion animation movie based on a Neil Gaiman book. Pretty interesting watch.
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Tim Burton decided to make his own Frankenstein story, and this is it. Really nice visuals and music. The cast is big, but performances are so-so. Giving a pass to Vincent Price, though, his emphysema and Parkinson's was pretty bad at this point.

Captain Marvel (2019), 4/5
A weak 4/5. Surprisingly entertaining, will watch again. Brie Larson was unimpressive - I think she's a talented actress, but doesn't convince me she has the "right stuff". The 90's music flirting was too much on the nose as well.

Ralph Breaks the Internet:. ***1\2
Nothing too groundbreaking here, but it's reasonably entertaining. The best parts were probably the princess scenes and the parts that made fun of all the usual Disney tropes. Also the post credits scene...

Captain Marvel was pretty bad for a newer Marvel movie and it seems the audience may be turning on Disney. With more people warming up to DC and Shazam looking like a lighthearted good time it may be the beginning of the end for the MCU. Or maybe the playing field will just level out, we'll see. They do have Avengers 4 and Spiderman 2 coming up, both of which I'm sure will be fine. If they are good enough it will win back over some of the fans.
Aside from the obvious problems those 90's music cues were so distracting.

They're saying it has to make 750 million just to break even. It's at 525 but has already dropped off sharp. Big budget movies have to profit pretty high to be considered a success.

Ugh. I wish companies would stop with the fake reviews. I was leaning towards watching it when I heard Nick Fury's back and actual Skrulls are in it. The fake reviews only serve to annoy like stupid pop up ads and only make me want to see the movie less.
I watched How to Train Your Dragon The Hidden World at the local theater. I enjoyed it quite a bit. I especially liked the villain.

Galaxy Quest (1999)
A group of washed up actors from a Star Trek-like show are taken by real aliens, who believe the show was real, to help them fight other aliens. Great cast, some nice sets, and very fun. Alan Rickman was spot on.

Stan and Ollie (2018)
Biopic about Laurel and Hardy' last tour in England. John C. Reilly and Steve Coogan were spot on, they carried it through wonderfully. Worth a watch.
The New King of Comedy (2019)
Skykid wasn't exaggerating, this is a really good movie. The scene at the end during the award ceremony, with the father seeing what her daughter had to went through in her extra days was touching.

Boy Erased
Irony-deprived drama in almost contemporary Arkansas, from a true story.
After an unpleasant first contact with college Jared, a very nice boy, son of a preacher and himself a good Christian, admits he's gay. His father exiles him to a horrible "conversion therapy" center, with the expected traumatic outcome. Brainwashing fortunately fails, and Jared even recovers a decent relationship with his parents.
Mostly effective, if a bit simplistic, at suggesting feelings and thoughts with simple means; some gaps and unclear events affect rhythm, but the tone remains constantly harrowing.
There's a bigger issue, doubtlessly caused by starting from actual memoirs and from a desire to address a gender-troubled audience: Jared is one of the least interesting characters, the one with the most commonplace and predictable story, compared with the twisted fanatic souls of the "therapists", with the complexity of what Jared's parents think of religion, social pressures and family and how they got there, or with the obviously worse and more complex situations of other reeducation candidates that make Jared feel like a n00b.

Escape Room
A mediocre execution of a traditional exploitation plot, with so little depth that everything becomes quite pointless.
Three major characters (a poor semi-alcoholic cigarette smoking dude, a shy and cute girl who studies physics, and an arrogant investment broker) are introduced with several initial scenes each, in which they receive an invitation to a famous escape room (in a large building in Chicago, apparently in the morning). Three minor characters (a young and nerdy escape room enthusiast, a somewhat nervous blonde and a middle aged trucker) are merely found in the waiting room, and then the six contestants try to, guess what, escape the room together.
Most characters are killed by traps; meanwhile they discover the surprisingly meaningless reason that made the bad guys pick them as contestants, with no practical consequence (GTFO is confirmed as the best course of action).
The rather late discovery is also propped up, to make it look important, with incomprehensible irritating non-clues that only make sense in retrospect. Non-spoiler: the unusually stupid reason was chosen to allow the writers to feature disparate characters without the effort of relating them to each other.
After someone "wins" the game, the ending is ruined with implausible and inappropriate further events, with the transparent purpose of justifying a sequel.
The suite of successive rooms to escape is of course the main point of this production, and it is barely adequate, good looking and surprising for the characters but too simple, too random and lacking variety.

Canadian Bacon: **
Absurd little 90s film starring John Candy that depicts Alan Alda as an unpopular president who attempts to start a cold war with Canada to boost his low approval ratings, leading to an actual invasion of Canada by a group of jingoistic rednecks from Niagara Falls (led by John Candy's character) which nearly results in an actual war. A couple of funny scenes (the best part would be where the invaders get pulled over in a stolen RCMP truck covered in spray painted anti-Canadian graffiti and forced to add French translations) but it's one of those movies where you can YouTube the good parts and skip the rest.

Ali's stares of pure disdain are worth the price of admission alone. Good stuff. Oscar bait for sure but you would expect far less from the mastermind behind Dumb and Dumber (which is amazing but still...). Apparently one of a few films filmed in a 2:1 or thereabouts ratio. Not sure I like that.
