The Prisoner of Azkaban. I'm glad the Harry Potter series has taken an appropriately darker and more violent tone, but the problem is that doing so makes all of the slapstick humor and kooky characters seem all the more jarring. And at this point, I'm completely sick of Harry's relatives. Gah, they're annoying. It's the best in the series thus far, but I'm still waiting for these movies to completely drop the silly bits altogether. Here's hoping.

There was a time, in the era of great chaos, when the Earth and the moon were at war with each other. A daredevil from the moon piloted a bizarre aircraft. It was feared, and because of its shape, called... Einhander.

Ah, yes, exactly this. Heavy sugar-coating is something I am allergic to, especially the U.S. version of it.

Speaking of which...
Re. Cosmos; It was quite the spectacle.
I could never fully enjoy it, though. That insufferable bombast, Sagan, displayed such mental disease, that I would not believe him if he were merely to say that it was raining outside.
I only focused on the content; Sagan's bombastic style never really attracted me. As an adult I would probably find this style too irritating. Then again, as an adult I can read, so I can get informed in a more time-parsimonious manner.
Chomsky, Buckminster Fuller, Yunus and Glass would have played Battle Garegga, for sure.

Sagan, 'Bombastic'... ? Not to be confused with Neil deGrasse Tyson... correct?

If that's your interpretation of his narration, stay away from Kenneth Clark - Civilisations, Jacob Bronowski - The Ascent of Man, James Burke - Connections, Robert Hughes - The Shock of the New.

Who's next on the gallows? Mr. Rogers? Jim Henson?

I wouldn't put him on the gallows just because he used a bombastic prose. I am not that kind of person, since I can live with the fact that some styles irritate me (note: Sagan's written prose was generally sober, from what I recall). I will not take offence, although I find the comment offensive.

Said this, Tyson is a person that I have been able to endure for no more than 2 sentences, in video and prose. More in general, the sensationalistic style of popular scientific divulgation that has become popular from the '80s onwards really gives me headaches (but not extermination urges yet, thankyouverymuch. I try to behave!).

I will definitely steer clear of those authors you mention, thanks!

fair enough; I won't take offense to empty criticism and tautological arguments.

Thanks; it's not like my "it irritates me" aimed to be a form of criticism to begin with.
I cannot speak for Zen, of course.

On the tautology of arguments...sometimes you need to simply state than an opinion is an opinion, or that boys will be boys, life is life, or that football is football-football (not just football!), and so on

EDIT: Leandro: yes, Ready Player One. I simply could not keep my eyes open while watching it. I also tried to watch War of the Worlds. I agree with MM on its structure. I stopped by the time the movie becomes a mess, because I couldn't stomach the direction the movie was taking.

I feel like I am also losing many of the finer formal (cinematographic) details when watching his movies, too. I am finding really hard to appreciate Spielberg's skills as a director when the way he sugar-coats concepts distracts me so much. Any tips?

SAGAN-ites! A nest of them!
And here was I, thinking that the Farm's Lynch-ian Order, was the worst of it!
I may be the leader of them. Anyway, curious what you have against him. You failed at having any real argument with sustenance about Lynch (other than you don't like his work, which I guess is fair enough) but curious what someone would hate about a guy that brought science to the masses, all the while tripping balls in his free time. Honestly though I didn't watch the old Cosmos save an episode or two. I did read the book, along w/ Pale Blue Dot & Demon Haunted World, all of which I thoroughly enjoyed but was so long ago I can't remember why.

Fun Fact: After watching the Ted Bundy Tapes I had to play her the Pale Blue Dot excerpt on Youtube. Eerily similar voices & speaking styles.

I saw this around 2011 or so? Really good, and honestly I didn't know that it was such heavy subject matter so it kinda came out of left field. Not sure I was ready for it.

Well if you are starting fresh...

My opening salvo would be Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Kagemusha and The Hidden Fortress. You really can't go wrong for the most part though.

Had an instant, gut-level, dislike of the guy.
Being witness to the AMSR he had to the sound of his own voice; "Plaaanetttsss...,SSss", was also, intolerable.

Most proffered, pre-packaged experts, give me the same creeping-flesh.

I find Lynch, the person, charming and genuine enough.
I bring this up, as I sometimes wonder if fans conflate the charismatic Lynch, with his work. If true, I think this observation, signifies.

His work, on the other hand, is unforgivably meandering, belaboured and ultimately meaningless improvision.

I feel his talent lies in the Vignette (with choice music, of course!).
Less than a minute into Blue Velvet, I "got it". Didn't really need to watch the rest of the film (I did. It was awful)

It seems obvious, to me, that his medium should be Canvas, not Celluloid.

I like Lynch the guy, and his work. I don't think I confuse the two. I actually find that hard to do as he's quite well mannered and soft spoken... his characters... not so much! That being said, I can't remember anything about Blue Velvet it's been so long. I still whack off to Twin Peaks: The Return though.

Headshot

Courtesy of the gents who brought us The Raid. Speaking of - stick with The Raid. Turned it off after about a half an hour. Meh.

Has anyone seen The Night Comes for Us?

Yeah, Headshot is just okay. A lot of the stylish, boring trappings that plagues modern Asian action films. Night Comes for Us is muuuuuuch better. It's overly long and has a few bits of unnecessary exposition, but it's probably 90% action. Highly recommended if you love seeing henchmen destroyed.

Was it the same team? Looks like just one similar production company that got involved in post for the two, different director, writers, etc.

Edit: related, has anyone watched The Apostle? Same director as The Raid on Netflix.

That explains it then. Hopefully Evans well helm one more martial arts extravaganza before he is done.

I may check out The Apostle, but might want to re visit the Raids and The Man from Nowhere first.

Same boat. I was actually going to go see this Friday (for free). But, something else has come up, which means the last super hero movie I have seen in (theater or otherwise) is Logan. I think the one before that was Dark Knight Rises.

Yeah, I know. I'll get there. FWIW, I've not wanted to watch it until I can give it the time it deserves (and not on an airplane -- at least a domestic leg). Those opportunities are few and far between these days I'm afraid. For some reason on international flights I can sink in a bit better, so perhaps next Japan run... although I was planning on tackling a doozy for that already.

I've a problem not so much with the film itself, as with the sentimentality it evokes in its most ardent enthusiasts (same with Forrest Gump the film and Flowers for Algernon the book). They are just not the kind of people who wanna know real-life mentally challenged any better than they used to know before, or who fear them any less thanks to a book or a film.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is not about mental illness.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"
