Movies you've just watched
Re: Movies you've just watched
The Mechanic (1972)
I think Bronson is great. He was in a ton of films, most of which aren't up to much by the time the 80's arrived. But in the 70's he was the MAN. Michael Winner made a load of shit, but a few of his films flirt with actually being good. The System is one, and this is the other.
Bronson plays bored hitman Arthur Bishop living on Mullholland Drive. Jan Michael Vincent plays the kid he takes on to train up. The first 15 minutes there is no dialogue, and the rest of the film has a sedate pace, in keeping with Bishops outsider perspective. It's a bit of an existential film with a couple of good action sequences. Gerry Fieldings abstract score adds to the weird feeling the whole film has. If you took this and Lolita you would have Leon.
Apparently there was a homosexual relationship between the two in an early version of the script but Bronson chucked that out. He also wrote in an obligatory part for his wife, but their scene is pretty good.
On a Bronson kick I also watched 10 to Midnight. One of those unselfconscious Cannon films from 83. Pretty exploitative stuff, a naked killer runs around killing naked women... still better than The Last Jedi.

The Clovehitch Killer (2018), 4/5
Loosely based on Dennis "BTK" Rader, this is a thrilling eh.. thriller about a teenage boy that stumbles on the possibility that his father is the local serial killer that's been on hiatus for the last ten years.

X2: X-Men United ***
Here's another example of a series that started out decent then went downhill as the studio continued to run it into the ground. The first couple of X-Men movies seem to be the best ones, then the quality just started going downhill from there until you start getting such lovely dumpster fires as X-Men Apocalypse and The Wolverine. I don't know why, but the Fox X-Men movies just feel like a slog through a bunch of doom and gloom to me, even the better ones. Even the first Deadpool movie (I haven't seen the second one) spent a good chunk of its runtime wallowing in misery.
On the plus side, at least with Disney buying Fox we won't get any more of the dumb "contractual obligation" movies like the various ill-advised attempts at Fantastic Four films.

Old Jackie movies are the best Jackie movies for the most part. His work just about has an Eddie Murphy like split. Late 90s is around the breaking point for Jackie, I believe.ChurchOfSolipsism wrote:I'll never understand why Jackie picked this script... his films work because his audience knows he does all the shit he does for real. CGI and a character that is immortal ruin all of the fun.
I went through this entire franchise not too long ago. Not movies I will repeat often, but glad I watched them all at least once.emphatic wrote:Yes, it is. Tonight, I treated myself to:
The Dead Pool (1988), 3/5
Very surprised to see Jim Carrey in an early role in this Dirty Harry movie. I bet this was all the rage when it was released, they did some clever political commentary in it as well.
This movie is finally getting a BD release that isn't limited in some way, if anyone is interested.drauch wrote:"You know what this's for, Warren!? Know what this's for!? It's for jerkin' off!"

I am, I'll give it another watch in a few months. Justice League: **1/2
Less dark and depressing than most of the DC Murderverse movies, but it feels about half finished. The whole Superman subplot feels rushed and thrown in because it needed to be there, the villain is about as generic as can be, and Batman looks like he's wearing pajamas. And the heroes seem to put just about as much care into protecting their secret identities as Tony Stark does in the first Iron Man, yet nobody seems to figure any of it out. Their Flash seems to be better than I expected, but comparing the movie version to the TV version just confuses things.

Halloween (2018)
Direct sequel to the 1978 movie. Started interesting, but quickly went the way of the other reboots. Worth a watch, I guess.

"The Magnificent Seven" is an awesome movie, yes. I'm not sure that Bronson's character is much of what makes the movie awesome, though I can't honestly say whether that's because of him, or the writing. Could very well be the latter.BrianC wrote:Charles Bronson was also in some awesome westerns. Magnificent Seven and Once Upon a Time in the West.

Oh and for fellow movie buyers, Criterion is putting out Police Story 1/2 in a single set. Previous releases of this were too poor quality for me to want to own, so I will be pre-ordering it.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Ya, Eureka is as well for importers/UK. Can't remember if we mentioned that yet or not.

Re: Movies you've just watched
IIRC the Twilight Time BD of 10 to Midnight was uncut. It was a nice piece - I sadly think I made a mistake in getting rid of it. Twilight Time is fond of those "only 3000!" printings. I have my Zardoz though, and will never let it go.Steamflogger Boss wrote: This movie is finally getting a BD release that isn't limited in some way, if anyone is interested.

Yeah I read it that way at first too. I don't think it's ever been cut on DVD in the states, just limited on BD through Twilight Time 'cause they suck.

I watched it too. Good stuff. Loved the scene with the map. I was surprised to hear Val Kilmer sing in the movie.

I believe you mentioned something about a large age difference GP. If you don't mind telling, how much of a gap are we talking about?

I've had people throw out all sorts of judgemental shit on a specific reddit thread about immature women and whatnot (japan focus) after explaining that you can get all kinds of shit with different ages. I was like, "did you read my fucking post"? When I repatriated I had a pretty big span in my age filter on all the dating apps. There were at least 3 girls that much younger than me that I went on more than one date with, and all three were leaps and bounds more mature than my crazy ex who was older than me. The downside is the current one lacks a taste in the more ridiculous things in life for some reason.

I'm a bit surprised at how well regarded zucker-abrahams-zucker films are on here. I empathize with your GF, I loathe slapstick.GaijinPunch wrote:Top Secret

To your later point, a close friend is dating a 'woman' 17 years younger. Provided she doesn't speak (otherwise it's a bit like trying to entertain yourself by playing with a sack of rocks),
he's enjoying himself. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't envious; petite texmex w/ a bubbly ass... mmmm delicious. Anyways, according to him the age difference is more of a problem for him
than her.

It's a ZAZ film, not just Abrahams. I haven't heard much at all about the films he directed solo on here, aside from the Hot Shots movies.rapoon wrote: I'm a bit surprised at how well regarded Abrahams' films are on here. I empathize with your GF, I loathe slapstick.

Never considered these as slapstick... similar... maybe slapstick on steroids? Most slapstick is just physical and not nearly as well thought out.rapoon wrote: I'm a bit surprised at how well regarded zucker-abrahams-zucker films are on here. I empathize with your GF, I loathe slapstick.
Yeah, mine is literally nothing like that. Others between relationships? Sure. I dated a couple of gals I wouldn't have even introduced my friends to. The Naked Gun movies were a bit more slapstick than some of the others, if I remember correctly. Still plenty of sight gags, but Drebin was made quite a bit dumber for the movies.

Aside from the "Enter the Dragon" parody, the only thing worth watching "The Kentucky Fried Movie" for was all the tits.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"
