Pre-order up now for Kimagure. Looks like a two parter, the other one containing the OVAs and the movie, but not the weird later re-imaging movie or whatever.

Also Twilight of the Cockroaches, which I've been waiting like half my life for.

Yeah dude, they've got some killer sales on some of their in-house releases like that, Cobra, and Dirty Pair. All well worth it.

Correct. They didn't acquire that with the license. Similar to how UY: Beautiful Dreamer was separate from the rest.

Anyway, I pre-ordered it the moment I saw.

Looks like just DVD for TOTC. Not too surprised, sure as hell beats VHS.

That show looks damn good, but I've spent entirely too much on anime between Sentai and RS sales...

Twilight of the Cockroaches... what a weird / great flick.

So the KOR re-imagining... I assume it is just as shitty as it sounds?

Yeah, I never gave it a chance. I usually hate weirdo one-shot revamps where they change the character design.

Versailles rules and I highly recommend it. It's super sparkly with all the Dezaki flourishes you know and love. Postcard memories forever. Hope they pick up more classic stuff in the future, but dunno how well stuff like this sells for them with some of the other silly stuff they release.

Sounds like just about every other remake. Two weird ones in the 90s that had wildly varying results: Gatchaman, a remake, which wasn't totally horrible, and I suppose now seems kinda kitsch as it's so 90's and Yamato 2520 which is... well, not sure, but it was terrible. Guess it was a sequel like most Final Fantasy games are sequels - title only.

Just watched the first 2 ep of Ace o Nerae! and oh myyyyyy.....

Sooooo pretty....

Also just realised that the whole training part in Gunbuster is an hommage to this, hehe.
Spoiler
-When girls run around for warm-up and yell "Fightu!!!! Fightu!!!! Fightu!!!! "
-The young protagonist being picked on elite team instead of a way more technically advanced teammate, based on her raw potential.
-Her turning down the position cause she feels bad, but coach won't accept!
-Rejected member of elite team humiliating her every chance she gets, including the very specific "putting a thumbtack in protagonist's shoe" bit

Heck the coach character himself is 100% the coach in Ace o Nerae!, just straight up transposed in Top wo Nerae! Gunbuster  I think it's the same voice actor too
Def will be watching Ace o Nerae! now. (I remember GaijinPunch recomending it, I just hadn't gotten around to watching it for some reason. But now that I'm watching some Versailles, I'm totally in the mood to watch it).

EDIT : OMG! I can't believe it  This is so funny. I'm in
Spoiler
the other girls reaction after the protagonist gets picked on elite team is priceless :

They think she sucked the coach's cock to get on the team! Amazing

Oh yeah, it's a huge reference, even with the Japanese title of Aim for the Top! Was thinking how I need to rewatch Gunbuster again the other night, as my giant poster of Noriko glares at me from above my computer.

Wasn't me... never seen it. However, I quite often refer to Gunbuster by it's original title, Aim for the Top, which I can't recommend enough. An encapsulation of everything amazing about the medium in the 80s right there in 6 episodes.

Yep. seent it. I have Gunbuster on retail VHS here :D

It is amazing, I agree. Love how it becomes Deep Sci-Fi by the end, and how big a contrast it is with the pace/mood of the beginning. Outstandung stuff

Ah bummer, didn't realize that DVD was so out of print now, yet we've got the movie version readily on Bluray. Lame.

I thought the same thing. At least I was able to see the OVA via Netflix DVD rental a long time ago.

It looks great. I've just spent too much and I have more pre-orders on tap. I might even end up paying more for it down the line but I can't budget it in during this sale.

It's never been released state side. However in the current climate who knows, we are getting soooo much old anime I never thought we'd see released outside of Japan.

It's quite unfortunate. I'm not sure who would even want to watch the movie.

Seisenshi Dunbine OVA: Some consider this the bastard child of the Dunbine series. Personally, I think it's pretty good. Nice animation, visuals and well-done battle scenes. It's very light on dialogue, and mostly focuses on the action.

Toki no Daichi - Hana no Oukoku no Majo: This OVA did not even have English subs until recently. Anyway, it's a cute and lighthearted fantasy adventure with amusing characters, and doesn't ever take itself too seriously.

Ayane-chan High Kick! (Ayane's High Kick): Short OVA about a highschool girl who wants to become a wrestler, but is tricked into doing kickboxing instead. Pretty funny and the matches are well-done. Unfortunately this series was meant to have more episodes, but was cut short at just two. Story-wise, though, it doesn't really feel lacking.

Koko wa Green Wood (Here is Greenwood): Yet another one I watched back in the day. It's what I feel is an early example of the slice of life genre, and it's executed very well. The third episode is definitely one of the highlights of the series.

Quite popular in my circles back then. A local guy had the LDs, so I had a nice SVHS master off of them. In fact, last time I saw my mom she brought me a box of shit that had been lying around and a cover for said SVHS casette was inside. Was it a good cover? Fuck no... think 1993 inkjet printer on normal paper. But it did remind me maybe I should watch through it again and see if it's still enjoyable.

Finished Shoukoku no Altair. It's akin to Legend of the Galactic Heroes and even closer in setting to The Heroic Legend of Arslan, in that it's a similar story of opposing nations and their leaders, with an eye for both grand strategy and individual battles. But it just can't reach the grandiose perfection that is LotGH. Though I feel this is partly due to the anime being "only" 24 episodes, it felt very rushed at times, with some important and possibly interesting characters barely getting any screen time and/or proper development. Had it been LotGH we would've learned their history, motivations, and what they do when they aren't on-screen. Here, they just kind of appear, do their thing here and there in a handful of episodes, and then the series ends. Though sometimes they do get their head chopped off.

The story itself suffers from this too, some important events are just shown briefly or even happen completely off-screen, with the characters commenting on it afterwards. And to top it off, on more than one occasion the art quality dips way below normal, and in many scenes characters in the background (even if they're main characters) were drawn very simplistically with barely any detail to them.

I did enjoy watching it, but it is kind of hard to recommend it in a world where Legend of the Galactic Heroes and The Heroic Legend of Arslan exist. Still, once you've watched through LotGH three times, it's good to look at a different take on the same concept.

The anime is horribly butchered compared to the manga, failing to capture the unique artstyle and cutting out all the more down-to-earth comedic SoL bits and a multitude of character interactions so it can jam as much as possible inside two cours. That said, even the manga tends to focus more on the grand strategy aspect while letting the characters and underlying motivations slip to the wayside. It's not as easy to care about the events that are happening compared to LoGH.

I liked them, yeah. Not as much as LotGH, but still quite a lot.

@Durandal: Yeah, I figured the manga might be better. Maybe if the anime had gotten 52 episodes for the same story, then it wouldn't have had to rush things and there had been more time for...everything.

I would argue that Altair is a good manga (for a shounen), but Arslan and Ginga are book series aimed at a more adult audience, and that were released at a difference pace.

The anime adaptations were also different in their own right (Altair's was really terrible, the original Ginga involved monthly OVAs crafted with the utmost care, etc.), but the source material also matters.

I would say that a writer who can create lengthy tomes and work at (relative) ease on world building has better chances to produce a great epic than a mangaka under a weekly (or even monthly) schedule.

Another mangled series was Kingdom. A seinen manga, and a very accurate telling of the early parts of the Romance of the three kingdoms was turned into...a shounen anime series with atrocious 3D parts. Ouch.
Chomsky, Buckminster Fuller, Yunus and Glass would have played Battle Garegga, for sure.

Watched the second Gokuu Midnight Eye OVA. Dope. Wish this one had kept going. I've started the manga, and w/ the exception of the intro scenes in the anime, they follow quite close. I believe there's 12 stories in all, and I've only gone through the first book (so 3). Good shit.

If anyone uses Hulu for anime (or Netflix) and has some good suggestions, please shoot them my way. Nothing too gripping, as I watch mainly to fall asleep. Or I could just watch Naruto Shippuden again. I missed so much by falling asleep-- half the time I didn't know what was going on. I also have the Crunchyroll app but I don't like dealing with the commercials.
