M.Knight wrote: In comparison, I am watching Gundam X at the moment and am around episode 20 or so. It feels like it's just random event after random event with no really big overarching goal or objective. I mean, there's a "gotta catch'em all" one but it might as well not be there. There's some info on the previous war and stuff, but...meh, it's not that interesting. And of course I don't even really pay attention to the battles and don't even feel like I missed something.

The series also pissed me off so much in the very first 30 seconds when it recycled yet again the exact same plot points in so many other Gundam series. Federation VS Colonies? Check. Newtypes being the key to the end of the war? Check. Yet another stupid nonsensical colony drop operation where you just kill your own homelands in suicide attacks and hope it will somehow show how evil the enemy supposedly is? Check.

It was so bad I considered dropping it right there, but thankfully the few scenes of a post-apocalyptic society afterwards seemed a bit more unique, and the MC is quite fun and has a few tricks up his sleeves. The two adult pilots introduced a bit later are also fun to watch, and so far my favorite episode is one where there is a focus on the personal lives of these two, which is mostly detached from pointless mecha battles while still showing how their choice to be mecha pilots influenced their lives (and vice-versa).

Oh, and the newtype hax in this one doesn't bother me that much for some reason.
I love Gundam X. The premise is basically "UC, except everything goes entirely wrong" [admittedly, UC is entirely fucked over as a setting anyway -- humanity barely survives the horrors of the universal century and all that jazz, shit just keeps going wrong from the OYW and shows no sign of stopping  ].
Hell, I kinda feel like they wanted it to be the end of UC, but it got moved out.
X does feel a bit thin on overarching plot, yeah. Part of me blames the troubled production... but apparently even though it got cut short, they didn't even really rush anything, they just jump ahead and cut out a bit from the middle and kept things going as intended.

Choujin Locke - Sci-fi movie about a so-called "superman" named Locke. What gives? He doesn't even wear a cape. Anyway, he's the most powerful esper in existence, and basically goes around foiling the plans of cosmic supervillians who are trying to take over the galaxy. Animation quality is pretty good for the time period, it's definitely recommended to fans of classic sci-fi anime.

Boku no Chikyuu wo Mamotte (Please Save My Earth): Yet another one I watched back in the day, but I'm writing about it anyway. This is a fairly unique 6 episode sci-fi shoujo OVA. It's about a girl who has a dream that she's another person living on the moon. Don't want to give too much away, so just go watch it. This is one of those shows that really stuck with me back when I watched it, even though it's relatively obscure today. Also, the soundtrack is fantastic. I still find myself listening to it sometimes.

Kekkou Kamen: Not all heroes wear capes. Or pants. Or anything, really, except for a mask on their face. Yes, Kekko Kamen is the heroine fighting for truth and justice with every battle in her birthday suit. Taking on her corrupt, extremist, fascist school administration, she goes head-on against her headmaster and various other teachers, students, etc. If you haven't noticed already, this is another one of "those" anime that really just gives no fucks and is pretty much as crazy as they come.

I remember this coming out way back when, and it being shit hot. Was non the wiser that it was a Shojo anime as it was pretty tame. The manga was quite obviously so, which is a bummer as i'm sure it was more more involved. Just couldn't be seen by my host family w/ those girly books. (If I wasn't aged before, I sure as fuck am now!). Wonder how I'd like it now. It did have quite an interesting story.

Yeah, I don't remember even hearing terms like "Shoujo, shounen" etc. until well after I had watched plenty of shows. They're just labels. A good story is a good story regardless. Maybe I'll check out the manga at some point.

null1024 : According to the narration, the world seems devastated and trying to rebuild itself but so far I can't say I have felt that in the slightest. It's not just X though, I guess that's a recurring problem in several long Gundam series. UC rarely felt truly fucked to me. Even if the world is supposed to have been destroyed in terrible wars, all we see is an invincible kid in a super shiny plastic robot that never actually gets endangered in any way and magically gets repaired every episode no matter how low on resources the crew would plausibly be. Besides, we don't really get to see in-depth how the wars impact your regular person's life, as the crew itself is a special case. (A counter example though : I think F91's initial scene managed to do that pretty well) Sometimes there will be some very minor characters for one or two episodes but it's never enough to really make me care about them.

The battles being so utterly one-sided also do not sell you very well on how dangerous Earth is supposed to have become and how hostile the setting is supposed to be. Right now in X, I am at a part where two of the bad guys send new named characters with weirdass quirks every episode just to get predictably slaughtered one after the other, and the duo shrugs it off as if they knew those were just pointless cannon fodder made to have an excuse to show Gunplas fight. It's as annoying to see unfold as fighting slimes in a JRPG. If battles were more like those in MS IGLOO or Thunderbolt December Sky where you can sense how everybody is brutally fighting with their lives on the line and where there isn't an overpowered main character that ruins any suspense as he is forced to survive, that would be a lot better. I imagine those can only work due to not having 50 episodes requirements.

In any case, it's good to hear the ending is not rushed despite a lower amount of episodes. I wouldn't be surprised if it would even be for the better. There's already tons of filler in Gundam series (almost all the battles for example), so having to cut fluff is a plus in my book.

Still watching Macross 7.

Episode 27 is where things get well... ridiculous.
It was already ridiculous, what with the MC going out into the middle of fights just to sing, but now we're entering goofy superpower territory.
Spoiler
IT TOOK MORE THAN HALFWAY THROUGH THE SHOW FOR THIS TO FUCKING HAPPEN
it's still an entertaining show, but it literally took half of the show for Basara's singing to actually, truly affect things
we Song Energy now, and it's basically just fucking magic

Mylene literally beams her song into Basara's voicebox, and he finds his will to sing again, and the two, LITERALLY WITH THE POWER OF SONG then stop the Protodevlin's huge fuck laser that was just shown to be more powerful than the one on Battle 7 itself.
this is actually just the goofiest god damn thing and I don't know what's happening

They're quite literally just to indicate the primary target demographic [eg, young boys, young girls, adults, etc], rather than genres. Hell, in the case of manga, they often just refer to the target demographic of the magazine the story was published in, even if the story leans more towards something you'd see aimed at a different demographic.

Tatsuki Fujimoto's new manga "Chainsaw Man" will be about a Yakuza guy with chainsaw blades for arms and heads being employed by a demon hunter agency to slay demons in exchange for a toast with jam and a hug by a girl every day. His other works include Fire Punch, a manga about a guy on fire punching people.

This manga will be serialized in Shonen Jump.

Fire Punch seemed like an okay premise, but it eventually just got kind of stupid and felt like the author was making the characters suffer more out of enjoyment. Too bad. This one looks even dumber, though. Maybe in an enjoyable way.

Makyou Gaiden Le Deus (Ledeus): There's one reason to watch this OVA, and it's for the action scenes. There's a lot of them, they go on for some time, and there's plenty of variety. It's a pretty basic fantasy + combat mechs thing, but still a lot of fun to watch. The entire last half is pretty much non-stop action.

Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01: A top-secret mobile armor suit (that convinently compacts enough to fit in a box) accientally falls into the hands of a university student, who proceeds to go on a rampage, mostly by accident. It's pretty lighthearted, there's no actual civilian deaths (although plenty of property destruction), and there's some pretty funny scenes, too. Ever tried eating shrimp while wearing a mobile armor suit?

Elf 17: This is one of those OVA that time forgot. It's short and pretty ridiculous. You really don't need any brain cells to watch this one. Still entertaining, though. The premise involves an intergalactic fighting tournament where the prize is a week-long tour of the galaxy. Of course, things just get sillier from that point.

Madox is pretty run-of-the-mill stuff and probably objectively average at best. but it is quirky and charmingin a way and I found it to be very decent, short mindless fun. I enjoyed it

In the same vein of middling "oh noes, unlikely hero got dropped in an armored suit" standalone OVA, have you ever peeped Relic Armor Legaciam? same kind of deal but I liked this one even better than Madox-01. It's on Youtube

I watched that one, but failed to recommend it solely because of the goddamn cliffhanger ending that is never resolved. I've already ranted about 80's-90's OVA's crappy tendency to just fucking end with no resolution in sight, so it's not surprising that something with a cliffhanger as blatant as this doesn't get a recommendation from me, lol.

yeah supposedly the team had planned many episodes. but lack of budget prevented them of doing more than 1 ep. hence the cliffhanger

That was a big problem in the OVA peak of the 80s/90s. They just simply ran out of money all the time. Happened with BGC but at least that got more content. Giant Robo is one that finished but it took...SIX YEARS to release 7 episodes. Riding Bean was cool, wish we could have seen more than one episode of that. Well we kinda did with Gunsmith Cats I guess.

Quality with any type of anime varies, but some of those super high cut OVAs that were clearly a labor of love have some of my favorite animation ever.

Almost all my favourite Gundams are OVA, though I do absolutely love Zeta and Char's Counterattack as well.

So I would have watched Lupin Gold Babylon by now, but that's derping around in the mail. It's one of those rare Lupin things I've never seen. I've heard it's middling but I'll see what I think of it.

Probably going to start Samurai Bride tomorrow.

Over half that time was the lag between 6 and 7. I remember that... was weird. I was basically out of the hobby when it came out but had to watch it for completion. I'm going to have to do something similar when Shenmue III is finally released.

Tokyo Godfathers was great, but it bums me out that they never finished Kon's last film. Feels like there's a thing of 'creator dies, creation dies too' in Japan, like Despera not being finished after Ryotaro Nakamura passed.

I’ve just about finished watching the original Patlabor OAV series and have to give it a strong recommendation. I’d seen a few episodes back in the early 00s. I remember thinking they were a bit weird, especially compared to the Oshii films, but never went back to them. Maybe it’s because I’ve been primed to expect some slapstick and goofy shenanigans but I’ve been really impressed. The comedy bits actually land most of the time (and I fucking hate JPN TV). The animation and art is superb. The direction is very interesting and one can definitely see the Oshii style developing here. Of course the world building, or sekaikan, is second to none.

It's very interesting to see how Headgear envisioned this high tech future society that’s managed to build these giant robots. Their greatest weakness? Traffic congestion.

Also the lack of moe bullshit is refreshing. Though it’s disappointing that you can’t turn off the English subtitles with the JPN audio.

All in all its been very enjoyable and I highly recommend it if you're down with anime from this era. Looking forward to capping this off with the movies. Will def roll up a fat one before I watch Patlabor 2.

Then it’ll be on to the TV timeline. Here’s hoping it’s not complete shit.

Ah, yes. I was just reading that. This dissuades folks in Japan from importing the cheaper North American Blu-rays. I found this excellent list that tells you whether you can disable subtitles for a particular release.

Burning Blood: MANLY as fuck OVA supposedly about boxing, but mostly about one very angry highschool student beating the shit out of people and riding his motorcycle.

Unfortunately, this one lacks any official or unofficial subs/dubs. So you're going to have at least a rudimentary understanding of Japanese. But honestly, that's not even a 100% requirement to enjoy it, because most of the storytelling is done through the visuals alone. It's not exactly a complicated plot, neither is the dialogue.

Of all the things that happen, this is probably the least offensive. Beats hamstringing the av quality or losing extras. But it's still lame of course. I need to do testing against original releases, but I am VERY DISAPPOINTED by Funimation's "essentials" BD line so far. If the original BD releases of the show are as bad, then it is what it is but if not...yikes.

It's been a long time since I've seen the 2nd OAV but I remember it being alright. I picked up the recent BD mega set but lately I've been catching up on watching some old Japanese movies on BD that I got. I'll need to make some time for watching a fair bit of anime again soon.

@boss @scrilla
I agree that the world building aspect the Original OVA does for the "Patlabor Universe" and it's characters is very, very good. Some pretty witty dialogue too, it gives me a couple IRL snorts every time. And it's chock full of super well-written police action/intrigue too, along with the more lighthearted and charming moments

That's something I really like about Patlabor, among others, is the fact that it's a Police show (instead of military one, like most other "Real Robots" shows). So you get the "protect civilian" angle and the traffic also. btw I find it both hilarious AND extremely realistic that traffic is like, the biggest torn in the Patlabor force's side. Ha! I can definitely believe in THAT future. and fully understand how soul crushing it actually is...

What's the thing with the subs? Is it only a concern with euro/international release of these blu rays? I'll probably get the ultimate blu ray boxset even though I already have Movie 1 and Original OVA. It'll still be chaeper than buying the rest individually ... hopefully the ultimate blu ray box set has no problems?

@scrilla here's a very handy graphical timeline from the back of my blu ray standalone disc for Original OVA :

That's right. The very first Patlabor anime AFAIK. Thanks for sharing the timeline, they have the same one printed on the slip case of the Ultimate Edition. Yeah, I'm definable living in that traffic-clogged future as well.

I just finished the original OAV series last night. The two part 'The SV2's Longest Day' episodes were especially interesting. They obviously influenced Patlabor 2 quite heavily. It's sooooo Oshii to spend most of the running time building up the tension only to have it resolved with a sumptuously animated 90 second action sequence. Seriously good stuff.

No that I've finished the OAV series I think I will check out the TV shows and New Files OAV before watching the movies again. While a different timeline, the show doesn't seem like a hard reboot. I think I can still fit it in with the OAVs and films in my headcannon.

Unfortunately I am just going off the word of others here, I don't have any Japanese anime BDs. It's also been awhile since I looked into this crap, but some shady stuff has definitely went down because of the shared region. OTOH it's really nice because Japan does frequently get better BD releases of old movies.

In general Funi's BDs have been very disappointing. Honestly Animeigo is the only company that *really* cares. Discotek is only about one step behind though, and quite good.

I am getting ANYDVD again to properly rip BDs and get some good comparison shots for a few shows with different US releases that have clear quality differences.

I wonder why they didn't finish the season with those, instead of having another ep afterward(they slot 5 an 6 on my BD. Would have made such a killer ending to the season/series!)

I wouldn't surprise me at all if SV2's longest day was supposed to be the actual end of the OVA. Episode 7, Go North, SV2, was released a half a year after all the initial OVA episodes (all of them released during the span of April - December 1988 while ep 7 is listed on wikipedia as June 25th 1989) and the Patlabor fansite Schaft Enterprises points out that this episode was made as a promotion for the upcoming first Patlabor movie - hitting the silver screens just a month later in July, which is about how I remember it being said somewhere on my Patlabor Early Days Laserdisc box set as well.

I like episode 7 quite a bit actually, it looks a bit more polished than the rest of them, despite only being released a couple of months later - but it's more in the line of what would be in the TV-series and feels a bit misplaced after the truly excellent episode 5 and 6.

While it only was a few pages back, really happy to see Patlabor get some more love (and more importantly, watched by people who haven't seen it before.).

Edit: Just wanted to say that, if anything, I think that The Longest Day of SV2 is perhaps truly the essence of Patlabor. It proves that while Patlabor might start out as a light comedy based on an interesting concept, going full parody a few episodes in, it really is a versatile thing in the right hands and can go from slapstick to edge-of-your-seat political thriller in heartbeat.

The people over at Colony Drop made a Patlabor fanzine a year or so back. Like, an actual physical one that sadly doesn't have a digital release because I really want to read it but don't feel like importing it right now
