I lived across the street from that building. It was under construction all the while I was there. Mine is visible when he hits the pavement.

Finally got back and finished AD season four remix and started season five. Cinco de Cuarto was a really good way to end it.

The Haunting of Hill House (Netflix)

Not nearly as good as everyone says, but has it's moments.

Castlevania (netflix)

Half-assed.

There is only one episode worth watching. It's the second to last episode of season 2 where they have Trevor with the morningstar whip, Alucard with his sword, and Sypha with her ice platform take on a room full of vampires to a symphonic rendition of a classic Castlevania song.

The rest of the show is a sloooooooooow buildup to that moment. Whole episodes go by where the heroes are just sitting in a giant library reading books and sharpening weapons. Dracula sits in his chair in front of the fireplace in a depressed funk. Disloyal vampires from Dracula's court hatch schemes that don't get a chance to even begin.

Trevor is supposed to be the reluctant hero, but he's so dumb and such a douche he never becomes likeable. Alucard is just an inscrutable Bishonen whose only sign of a personality is he jokingly tells Trevor "fuck you" from time to time. Sypha, well she's the smart chick, so they didn't feel the need to give her a personality. On the flipside they wanted to make Dracula sympathetic, but he does nothing but wallow in depression over the death of Alucard's mother, and in the end the only thing the show does to show why all the other vampires are so terrified of him is that he's taller and physically stronger than them. The only characters that are somewhat interesting are Dracula's scheming and bickering lieutenants.

The one thing the show does have in spades is vampires and bat monsters tearing apart human bodies in a zillion different ways while making it abundantly clear they are killing children and babies in the process. Also someone in the art department has a really unhealthy obsession with vampires stomping on people's heads and bursting their skulls open like a rotten pumpkin.

As a drama it's half-assed because the characters are all 2 dimensional stereotypes. As an action show it's half-assed. And even as a collection of videogame fanservice it's half-assed. The heroes spend almost no time inside castlevania itself, barely any of the iconic rooms show up (there's a brief moment where trevor climbs on some gears) the monsters are all a bunch of giant were-bats, at best you might see one scene in an episode where Trevor throws an axe in an arcing trajectory and I guess I was supposed to come at the sight of it.

Bleh.

Haven't had a chance to watch much TV lately, I've long been mulling over finding some episodes of the old schlock rom/drama "Forever Knight"

Currently working on the anniversary edition of Carl Sagan's Cosmos, which is a really wonderful show. It must have been wonderful to live in an era where everybody was excited and hopeful, no?

Afraid I have to agree. Watched it last night on Halloween. I did think the fight scenes were well done (and clearly where the animation budget/enthusiasm was spent), especially in that penultimate episode. Personally, I disliked the tonal balance they decided on, where the cringing pretension of the whole thing ("themes guys.... themes") was leavened with anachronistic humor and memespeak.

Currently reading Pale Blue Dot. Obviously some of the things he talks about happening in the future have been done - the Cassini mission is the best example - but it really is great.

Making a Murderer Season 2.

... What to say. Probably not as good as the first season because the focus is more on the detailed evidence that Zellner is looking into. She's great, makes good tv. I could listen to her all damn day.

She comes up with a convincing argument for who actually did the murder, someone who had a question mark over his head in season one.
Spoiler
the fact that Bobby Dassey and his step dad gave evidence against Avery was a red flag from the start. I think she's right, Bobby probably did it and got help from his stepdad to deal with the body.

Separate to this, the same asshole who could've got Avery out of jail for the rape was told where Halbach's car was and again he didn't phone it in. The police saw a way to stop the payout to Avery by framing him for the murder. Not sure why the ex boyfriend helped them out. It seems as though Zellner thinks he moved the car to Avery's lot, but why would he do that unless the police had something on him. He had Halbach's daily diary in his possession, but as Zellner points out, that would have been with her when she was murdered. Did he take it when moving the car?!?
Less interesting is the Brendon Dassey stuff, only because Zellner wasn't on it. From an ignorant outsiders point of view the US court system seems fucked. If you don't get the result you want you just appeal or go on to a higher court... Why not just do away with all of them and have on that actually means something. What's the point in celebrating a victory if you opponent can just take it to another court. Or have I missed something obvious?

I think Avery is a piece of shit, which is why this is so engrossing, because I'm not really rooting for him, it's just that everyone else has their own kind of evil going on. Bonkers, glad it's over but glad I watched it. I need at least a year before I'm ready for season 3.

B/c the back and forth is only for appeals (and within limits). Shit like that is what sets Supreme Court precedence. For normal court cases, only a defendant can appeal, which is what Avery is trying to do. The state cannot. Once someone is found not guilty of a crime, double-jeopardy stands and they cannot be tried again.

If you want to see a fucked up Judicial system, try Japan's. The state can appeal, so not only do you have to be found not guilty in a cuntry with a 99.8% conviction rate, you have to do it 3 times. Google "Japan coerced confessions" for some great night time reading.

I watched the second half mainly, with my girlfriend filling me in on what I missed. She lives for garbage TV like this. I'm more emotionally involved with Brendan's case, as a father of a child with special needs. My kid can think for himself, is verbal (although not a native speaker of English), etc. I'm sure any backwoods cop would think, "he's speaking English, he's fine" then feed him some bullshit and arrest him. Long story short, I feel he was coerced. I also can't stand looking at or hearing Ken Kratz. His voice... it's like a Seinfeld character.

I'e completely forgotten about this. Still haven't started season 3. What the hell am I doing with my life!

The Haunting of Hill House.

Not really feeling this. Looks terrible, why is everything blue and yellow? Seriously I turned it off the other night and an old episode of Dynasty was playing and it looked fantastic. What the hell is going on with colour grading in modern tv and films. It all looks shit. Even Deakins is guilty of this.

Anyhow, I'm 4 episodes in, does it improve? I haven't been creeped out at all yet, just had some cgi stuff going on which always fails to scare. The but with the kid in the basement was cool. That's about it.

A bit but not majorly. It is maybe the most overrated TV show in recent memory. My summed up comments on this page or the last, is that it's got it's moments but not worth the praise.

I think what you are not digging about shows these days is using color correction to shift them to an ice cold palette. Ozark does this extensively. Back in the old days, this took skill with different film stocks and lighting. Of course, it was a fuck ton harder to do. Eventually film would be sent off to a lab that would make sure it was all consistent (and could alter what needed to be altered). I believe a "lab" still does this, but it's a bunch of computers nerds.

It really comes down to preference, and is often needed. Take a pic with warm, yellow lighting in your house at night. Use the app to "cool" it (or decrease warth). You'll see the colors become far more natural. You can apply the idea anywhere to match the mood (like a normal lit scene to a more depressing one). I used to do this w/ all my photos and then realized I should be concentrating on taking better photos. Then just said fuck it and do 99% black and white.

Sorry if you knew all that and were just venting. I see Al Bundy and think "confused old man".

I know what you mean. When I used to make short films I spent ages on getting the white balance right, otherwise you would have scenes that were tinted different colours. But now it seems as if that what they want. Give your whole show a blue tint to unify it, or have a green scene, followed by a blue one etc. It was really apparent in the first Lord of the Rings. I remember saying exclaiming "those blacks are not black!"

David Fincher is really guilty of this. All his film are... green and brown.

Never used to be. The best films ever made didn't do shit like this.

I am a confused old man though.

It is definitely a fashion statement. Look at the stock IG filters.

A bit, but a couple of things to note.
1: One thing he's good at is desaturation... at least in the most recent thing I've watched by him (well, as a producer) which was Mindhunter. They were at least going for his signature look. It is indeed cooled off in tone, but I don't think there's a shot of sunlight in the whole season.
2: He actually did this on film w/ Fight Club. They wound up bleaching the negatives, AFAIK, and actually experimenting until they found something they liked. I give more props for that than fucking around w/ two sliders on a computer.
Never used to be. The best films ever made didn't do shit like this.
A lot of it is to emulate old emulsions, or side effects of old film. I don't mind it, but I do agree it can be over used. Over bokeh is way more prominent though, and irks me.

Maniac

"Two strangers are drawn to a mysterious pharmaceutical trial that will, they're assured, with no complications or side-effects whatsoever, solve all of their problems, permanently. Things do not go as planned."

About halfway through, but it's excellent so far. recommended for PKD fans or anyone who otherwise just enjoys quirky, eclectic shows.

Anyone watching Manifest? Looks like my kind of thing.

Just watched "Halt and catch fire", 3 seasons of it. For those not in the know its a take on the tech 80's. It starts off with cloning the IBM PC around 1982, moves onto online gaming with a C64, invents an ebay and then founds the www. Yes yes, its not realistic but its a fun ride. It has 2 lovely ladies called Donna and Cameron. If you want to see rooms full of geeks running C64 hardware online with 1541 floppy drives this might be your thing. There are cameo appearances of Mario/Duck hunt/ on the NES and the Amiga gets a quiet mention. Somehow the show found a brand new OS/390 IBM mainframe as well. I'd give it a 7/10 so far with one season left to watch.

I love Halt and Catch Fire. Manifest is kinda meh. If you haven't watched The Leftovers yet, I would recommend that instead if you're looking for a "supernatural event mystery" type of deal.

Halt and catch fire is kinda good. Its one that I want to see where it goes. The thing that bothers me about it is that the writers are just inventing problems to over come and the relationships get complicated for no good reason. Donna and Camerons relations seem to be overly complex considering how much money they make. If you had those brains all in the same room I don't see how you could fail. Joe Macmillan is a really oddball character who is basically just a visionary who creams off everyone else work.

I watched Leftovers. If thats the one where a % of the population disappears in the first episode. I can't remember it very well after that. I vaguely remember another similar show where a school bus goes over the cliff and several years later a girl from that bus climbs the cliff and goes home like nothing happened. I might be getting the 2 shows mixed up.

I'm kinda easy with supernatural event mysteries. If Manifest is as good as Wayward Pines i'd be all over it, I absolutely loved Wayward Pines even though it never got much recognition (S1 only, S2 was a disaster).

2nd The Leftovers. You can do the whole thing pretty quickly, and it nails the landing. Might go through it again.

I have a friend that has highly recommended Halt and Catch Fire. Might give it a go finally.

Wayward Pines was great. Manifest is too much like a soap opera IMHO.

Oh, and yeah, I think Titans is the best DC show right now. Much cooler than Gotham.

I will take a look again sometime if I get the chance.

I don't know if Its the effect of the walking dead, but I tried E1 of the latest season and only got half way through before falling asleep. I was tired though. It seems knife kills to the head are the order of the day now. The part in the museum just felt wrong and I have no idea what timeline its on. For a show that at one point had one of the biggest audiences its really not pulling any punches in the idea department.

In preparation for True Detective Season 3, the gal and I went through Season 1 this past weekend. As a millenial, it is hard to get her to pay attention or grasp just about anything, but this she got even though I had to pause a few times. In her defense, it's quite dense. Still enjoyable. Cautiously optimistic for Season 3.
