Do new games count?
Got to try out this pretty cool Space Harrier homage at Portland Retro Gaming Expo last weekend (or more precisely, at the CTWC afterparty). It manages to reproduce what made Space Harrier cool surprisingly well:

If "space harrier clone" means generic view-from-behind camera, as it seems from some of the titles listed above (for example, JJ runs and jumps but doesn't fly etc.), then stuff like Sega's Galaxy Force or Home Data's Tetrastar should be added as well... Not to mention After Burner...

@ sumez: pretty cool pic, although a little too intrusive hud for my tastes.

A note: if you look for it in appstore on iPad, you should switch search to "iphone apps" to see it.

i m not sure if gyroscope controls are 100% good though, seem to be too responsive (?)

If Soul Star qualifies, then how about Star Fox etc?

Gamera 2000 on PS1. It has live action cut scenes and they're terribly awesome. Game is pretty average though.

Too bad there is no MST3K version of that game.

Ah, I see. Like 2-d scaling sprites. That's the difference.

I don't know of any more games to mention. Though Gamera 2000 brings to mind Panzer Dragoon Zwei - probably the pinnacle of the genre, along with Rez.
How about any games that have Space Harrier style levels or bonus rounds? ..any come to mind?

You didn't know?

https://vgmdb.net/album/703 (btw looks like "movie section" music was done by Tamayo)

Also one of songs from it was pretty often performed on their lives

You can never have too much Ogura singing in vocoder :D

I didn't know. It does have some similarities to the Zuntata sound, but it's much too upbeat and trance'y for me to really consider the connection.
It does explain a lot though. Really love the soundtrack.

Are any of them as good as Space Harrier? All these years later I don't think I've ever played a similar game that's ever topped it for action or spectacle.

Or soundtrack... or environment... a true gem.

Indeed, one of only three 'day one' buys on my Switch over the next few months, the other two being Virtua Racing and OutRun :D

Decide for yourself.

Still a great chance you'll enjoy many of those games.

I've never played any of these, so don't take any of these as recommendations, but here's some doujin Space Harrier imitators for PC:

[*] 異法少女マガツヒ, from PlatineDispositif.

[*] SHAFTDIVER, a Hellsinker fangame from D.N.A. Softwares.

[*] SPACE MARISAR & SPACE MARISAR EX, Touhou fangames from Your Game Creaters.

And some R18, totally NSFW games:
Spoiler
[*] BOOSTER GIRL, from void*.

[*] Magical Trail, from ONION software. (Video footage here.)

[*] Attack Joker Kingdom, from PuppeShinohara [N=S], available at DLsite.
(Incidentally, if anyone here actually wants to buy a disc copy of this game, rancor currently has one he's trying to get rid of.)

Also, there's someone working on a totally unofficial Space Harrier remake for PSVR.
