Both (particularly Campbell's story) are well worth the time.GaijinPunch wrote:Damn. What took so long? It's been raved about in this thread for years. Tempted to try the novella as well. Would like to get around to the original as well but my to watch list is quite long.

Marvellous! I have the theme tune in my head as I type.dan76 wrote:There's another film that's kind of based on the original story called Horror Express. It's got Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and Telly Savalas. It's about a creature thats frozen in a block of ice being transported across Siberia... Obviously it gets out. It has that same thing of transferring into other people. Saw it when I was a kid and it terrified me. Pretty good, Spanish / British co-production - I think the Spanish aspect makes it way more enjoyable, a fair bit of gore, better shot that some of the stodgy British films from around that time. Savalas as a Cossak is worth the price of admission alone. I rewatched it a couple of years ago and at the end thought "Shit, this is The Thing!"
It did not give me "the chills" back in the day, though. It is certainly Hammer high "camp", though. Good stuff.
It was the following year's The Creeping Flesh (1973), again with Lee and Cushing, that "got" me! Fucking relentless, unstoppable horror! Fantastic

Seems like an interesting watch, I'll have to check it out. Thanks.dan76 wrote:There's another film that's kind of based on the original story called Horror Express. It's got Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and Telly Savalas.

Tourist Trap 1979
This is a weird one, I want to like it more than I actually do. Starts really well, but Chuck Conners turns up and it goes a bit TV movie (which isn't always a bad thing). It has the same production designer as Texas Chainsaw Massacre and you can really tell with the masks and waxworks - in fact that's the main reason to watch this, a long with a young Tanya Roberts.
It's also a bit similar to TCM in that a bunch of Scooby Doo like characters on a road trip come across an old house - this time waxworks with lifelike mannequins...
I may have posted about this before but I re watched it with an old friend who, when we were at school, would often bunk off and watch horror films with. He liked it a lot. It's a bit bonkers.

Scooby Doo and the Witch's Ghost. Good stuff. I like how it has supernatural stuff while still feeling like Scooby Doo. The portrayal of Wiccans is a bit iffy, though.
I found a solution to my little Evil Dead "dilemma". This. Same price as just one of the movies by itself. I also ordered Army of Darkness since it also sounds like something I would like.

The Thundering Sword
Shaw Brothers movie from 1967 that gives the impression at the start that this is gonna be more action focused, yet mostly is a romantic movie where the leading lady is distraught about having harmed her lover's brother once she finds out. Didn't enjoy this too much, but the costumes and sets are top notch in this.
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (Theatrical Cut)
Helping with QCing a reconstruction that is based off an HDTV release of the movie and a few other sources, so it doesn't have all the scenes from the extended version, and some of the extra changes that appear on the blu ray are also missing. JarJar is used too much in this movie, but there are times he's actually funny. Still needs a little bit of work as some stuff looks worse than the rest, but This movie is better than I remember it being!

Watership Down (1978)
Incredibly detailed lore, and beautiful watercolour scenes, as well as a nice score. Quite some gruesome scenes for a kids movie, but we used to raise rabbits, and oh boy when the males accidentally met outside their cages.
The Canadian series isn't too bad, either. More kid-friendly, at least.

The 1978 film, is a masterpiece.
Mercifully, the imminent BBC/Netflix "allstar" remake;
"that will not just tone down the levels of on-screen violence, to make it more appropriate for children, but give a boost to it's female characters",
is, as yet, unreleased.

Red Dawn (1984)
Fucking great alternative history movie with Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen about the USA being invaded by the Cuban and Guatemalan armies with support from the USSR. Shit ton of great guerilla warfare.
The 2012 remake where North Korea invades is shit.
Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
What the heck did I just watch? GAWD!
OK movie.

Notorious (1946)
Noir/Spy Hitchcock movie with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman, taking place in 1946 Rio de Janeiro. Good movie overall, the espionage setting was great, with the use of some great camera work and other little cool effects.
BryanC, this one's good for you if you haven't seen it yet.

Fitzcarraldo (1982)
This movie is so megalomaniacal that it deserves a post of it's own.
The film production of this movie is probably the craziest I ever saw since Holywood's 1950's epic movies, so much that in the year of release there was a documentary made about the movie (Burden of Dreams).
Werner Herzog is fucking crazy.

I heard of it. The current blu-ray is oop and sells for too much (I also heard the quality wasn't that great), but thankfully, there's a Criterion release coming in January. I was hoping they would pick it up like they did with Rebecca.soprano1 wrote:Notorious (1946)

edit: Looks like some sellers are selling it at a more reasonable price, but one time I checked, most of the sellers were selling it for over 50.

Yeah, I'd just wait. Worth getting a nice version of it.

Superb performances from Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, helping cement an amazing thriller. Highly recommended.

Star Wars Episode VI: Return of The Jedi (Project 4K83 release, 1080p version)
So, this is sourced from a special screening print made from the negatives, so it looks amazing. I can see why they went ahead and just did this movie instead of waiting for Empire. Looks fantastic, sounds good, and none of the stupid changes are present! Easily better than despecialized as this also has 2 frames that are missing from all the rest of the home media versions. Lando is still easily the best character in this movie. Worth grabbing. They added a folder of alt sources for audio if you don't enjoy the 70mm 5.1 or the optical audio (print audio is stereo).

My Dinner With Hervé (2018)
Biopic about the last interview that Hervé Villechaize, of Fantasy Island fame, did with British journalist Sacha Gervasi. Peter Dinklage played Hervé, and he fucking did it well. Andy Garcia played Ricardo Montalbán, which was funny as shit.
Well worth a watch. And yes, he does "The plane, the plane!" thing.

The Blob (1958). Decent movie with Steve McQueen trying too hard to be a teenager. Not scary at all. Still fairly enjoyable with a catchy theme song, though. Odd how this got a criterion release.

Halloween (2018)
this is what u get when u let shitty comedy director and writer to
bring back iconic horror michael myers to life again..weak plot
and some silly teen shit going on here and there..also that doctor twist
near the end is one of the worst thing in movies history..too cringe
But..jamie lee curtis dose great job in the movie
i liked Michel Myers scenes but most of them are rehash of original movie with
some shitty comedy ..
last act was tens but overall very disappointing sequel

Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein - Good stuff. Funny how the movie has more Dracula than Frankenstein's Monster, but no problems there since Bela Lugosi is back in fine form. Lots of neat scenes with Lon Chaney as the Wolf Man, as well.
Spoiler
Sweet voice cameo from Vincent Price at the end too

Word! Also since Brian already mentioned liking Carpenter's The Thing, I'll make my usual recommendation of Cronenberg's The Fly to complete the informal 1980s triptych of superb Fifties horror remakes.soprano1 wrote:Check out the remake from 1988, it's got some nice special effects and the 80's horror thing going on.BrianC wrote:The Blob (1958).
