Kathleen Kennedy to remain as president of Lucasfilm for another three years.

Image

I cant say that I am surprised. The optics of letting her go right now could be problematic. Not to mention the high probability that Kennedy is insisting her departure be on her terms.
The reality, is that Kennedy will most probably be hamstrung for the next three years, limiting her big-screen Star Wars ambitions to Episode IX.

Then again, she might insist on going all out, with Star Woke: Episode IX, as her last hurrah . . . can you just imagine?!

I liked the 1993 Mechagodzilla movie more but they're both good. The 93 one gets bonus points for its cool soundtrack.

Death Rides a Horse (1966)
Another good Western. Really great performance here from Lee Van Cleef. Superb score, too.

LVC is an excellent actor all-around, period, but his work in westerns is of note. I'm certainly a fan.

The Mercenary (1968)
Spaghetti Western with Franco Nero during the Mexican Revolution. Very funny and crazy as hell scenes, mixed together with a lovely score by Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai.

The Unknown- Too bad 15 minutes are missing, but it was still an incredible movie despite this. Neat seeing Lon Chaney do so much with his feet, even with a body double. Young Joan Crawford was quite a looker (recently enjoyed seeing her in the original version of The Women in an enjoyably "witchy" role).

The Cat and the Canary (1927 silent and Bob Hope version) - Classic spooky house movie. Enjoyed both versions, though I found the silent version to be the better of the two, despite being based on a broadway play. I was expecting the Bob Hope version to be funnier, but it was the silent version that had the most hilarious scenes. The silent version also had more elorbate camera angels and the better costume for the villain. A must see for Scooby Doo fans.

I might give it a watch since I have it in one of those cheapo western sets, but I don't have high hopes for the picture and sound quality. Definitely interested in the movie itself, though.

Ronin (Arrow Video)
One of my top 10 movies all time. Looks fantastic. The 2 car chases in this movie are some of the best ever filmed. Glad this got the real blu ray treatment last year. Up next is Legend of The Mountain which arrived this weekend as well.

Darned good movie. It is, to be fair, stacked with a high caliber list of actors, but they still have to have a script, and they have to pull it off, which they did. I'm a big fan of it.

Venom

A lost opportunity, with obviously capable writers trying very hard to follow a boring formula.

Thanks to the presence of a truly deranged villain, Venom, despite its tendency to kill people and eat heads, is unquestionably a hero (with the valid but simple motive that saving the world is a good thing and nobody else can do it).
An overly long and repetitive spectacular action scene in the middle, an overly long and pointless gunfight a bit later (non-spoiler: Venom is bulletproof...), a weaselly ending that strikes a very good balance between leaving the door open for a sequel and providing a conclusion, at the expense of plot integrity.
Good cast and CGI, no style to speak of except a decent level of realism.

Malvolent (Netflix)

(Sorry, no meme, but this works...)
https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/587a1db5-2 ... a0dcfefe1a

No idea why I allowed the girlfriend to pick this, as the preview looked pretty formulaic at best, but whatever. Little did I know the horror I was in for, and I don't mean the jumps that the movie had to offer. Why the fuck Netflix buys/produces shit like this I will never know, but I am assuming it's b/c their average subscriber has less than no taste and will watch literally anything. Quantity over quantity is definitely their MO. Current IMDB rating on this shit ball is 4.9, which I find quite generous. The last Netflix film I watched, The Cloverfield Paradox, was actually better. Never thought I'd say that.

Finally got around to seeing Venom. The Lady Gaga fans and R-rating purists can go suck it, the movie was good and fun to watch.

I rather watch the original with Fredric March and the Judy Garland remake of A Star as Born than either of those movies.

Mr. Destiny: **1/2

1990 comedy film that starts off with the protagonist (James Belushi) striking out to lose the high school championship baseball game in 1970, then through a series of plot contrivances finding out what would have happened if he had hit the ball and won the game. You can probably guess how it goes if you've seen It's a Wonderful Life or anything similar.

Checked out the slick sc-fi flick that's known as Hotel Artemis with a grand total of an hour & 34 minutes of running time. Considering that it takes place in a slightly futuristic LA in the year 2028 A.D. (where 3D printers are used to make replacement body organs {on a as-needed-basis} & holographic technology is prevalent within this alternative universe depicted within the film), there's mention of other so-called hospitals like Hotel Artemis throughout the USA and worldwide. Seems like there are more stories waiting to be told within the Hotel Artemis alternative universe. How much it costs for a membership to the Hotel Artemis and it's ilk isn't disclosed -- seems to me that it would be quite expensive for the services rendered/requested. Interesting premise, indeed, going on with HA, especially towards the last 30 minutes of it's eventual conclusion.

1 hour and 34 minutes! Yay!

I recently watched Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween and enjoyed them both. Interesting how scenes from the original 1950s The Thing From Outer Space appear in parts of Halloween on a TV screen years before John Carpenter did his own version.

I watched a non-Halloween movie today. Gun Crazy. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Never trust femme fatales.

Fantastic movie. That chase scene where you see from the back seat is pretty cool considering when the movie came out. Loads of good Film Noire out there.

Lilo and Stitch (2002)
Loved this one, didn't expect the slightly depressing backstory in the colourful Hawaii setting. Great usage of Elvis, too.
Also Ving Rhames.

Teen Titans Go! To The Movies (2018)
Overloading of self-aware jokes, 80's nostalgia, and nice references to DC's good stuff, and still a nice movie to watch.
Unlike the shit WB's churning out to rival the MCU, the animated movies and series are still tight stuff.

The Missing In Action Trilogy (1984, 1985, 1988) - Bought a cheap DVD (from Shout Factory of all companies) that had all three movies and decided to watch them in chronological order (i.e. II, I, III), even though Part III completely contradicts the story of the first two movies (not that the continuity of these movies matter that much). They're basically a more jingoistic version of the Rambo, with Vietnamese antagonists being so cartoonishly evil (especially the one in Part II), that they're more laughable than threatening. Like it's not enough that the bad guy had Chuck Norris's friend overdosed with coke, he burns him alive too, while in Part III, Chuck Norris's estranged wife ends up getting shot in the face the moment she stops being relevant to the plot.

My favorite line in the trilogy also double as Chuck Norris fact.

I watched the 1951 and 1982 versions of The Thing. I enjoyed them both, though I definitely liked the 80s one better. That is one freaky creature. I'm thinking of checking out "Who Goes There?" since I heard it's closer to the 1982 movie, but has some interesting differences.

Shout Factory has some nice stuff. That's the version of the 80s The Thing I watched.

I was a bit hesitant on R rated horror movies since I wasn't sure if I would like them, but now I know for sure I like them. Then again, I enjoyed Alien quite a bit. I am on the fence of Evil Dead 1, put definitely plan to see the sequels.

I also have been watching more off dvd and bluray and less off cable lately, so that probably helps.

Watched the extended Untitled cut of Almost Famous for the first time.

Runs a bit long with two and a half hours, however it feels complete in its depiction. No false sentimentality included. Belly of laughter for some hilarious scenes. Something to be said of a movie where no one tries to murder/save the world/cosmos for the duration of 2,5.

Goosebumps (2015)
As a fan of the classic books, had to see how this one went. Not too bad, I guess. Jack Black's Slappy voiceover was great, I guess he got inspiration from Hamill's Joker. His Stine role was over-the-top Jack Black, as usual.

There's another film that's kind of based on the original story called Horror Express. It's got Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and Telly Savalas. It's about a creature thats frozen in a block of ice being transported across Siberia... Obviously it gets out. It has that same thing of transferring into other people. Saw it when I was a kid and it terrified me. Pretty good, Spanish / British co-production - I think the Spanish aspect makes it way more enjoyable, a fair bit of gore, better shot that some of the stodgy British films from around that time. Savalas as a Cossak is worth the price of admission alone. I rewatched it a couple of years ago and at the end thought "Shit, this is The Thing!"
