It's a big departure from the earlier albums. Some people hate it because of that. I like it.

90's nostalgia holds me in her arms pretty damn tight these days, and I like it. Here is my favorite :

Re: What are you currently listening to?
Ramones / TOO TOUGH TO DIE (1984) I'm fairly charitable to these guys' 80s/90s output. Never quite returned to the flawless hook/duration economy of the classic early quartet, but there's plenty of scattered gems. This one's an exception, it's pretty goddamn solid throughout. Songwriting is only marginally more ambitious than their late 70s prime, a good thing for men of fiercely honed but relatively limited musicianship. I'm Not Afraid of Life has an almost Unknown Pleasures-esque haunt to it. Frequently outright pop (No Go, Chasing The Night, Howling At The Moon, Daytime Dilemma), but that's nothing new. Heartbreaking croon from Joey on the latter! OTOH some of the heavier stuff really thrashes (namely the damaged, quasi-hardcore Dee Dee-fronted Warthog and Endless Vacation), and the pounding trio of Mama's Boy, Planet Earth 1988 and the title track sledge nicely. Not quite as sledging as the near-fatal kicking to Johnny's skull that gave the LP its name, but these were never those sorts of dudes!
Super solid pop/punk, recommended.
>Too Tough To Die ("Halo 'round my head / Too tough to die" - badass)
>I'm Not Afraid of Life
>Planet Earth 1988 (authentically apocalyptic shmuppin tune, Death Destruction & Bombs Galore)

I have been completely obliterated by GATECREEPER.
Their stuff has straight cleaved my head open
I'll be seeing them live here on october 26th, along with Incantation(2nd time seeing them) and Dying Fetus(1st time seeing them).
To say I'm looking forward to this show, is an understatement

Every once in a while I will get into this zone where all I listen to for a week or two are C 64 tunes. This is one of those weeks.
I swear the SID is the best sound chip ever dropped into anything having one.

You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Re: What are you currently listening to?
INFERNO (2004)
Very polished Motorhead - not my type of "Motorhead"
Suicide is pretty good.
KISS OF DEATH (2006)
Whoah now! This could be any of a number of non-discript Rawk/Metal bands.
If not for Lemmy's voice, I wouldn't have guessed "Motorhead" on some of the tracks.
For the second time, I find Motorhead abiding in the sanctuary of a ballad; God Was Never On Your Side, is Lemmy through and through.
MOTORIZER (2008)
English Rose - I seem to recognise. From where, I don't know.
Teach You How To Sing The Blues and When The Eagles Scream, both start off like late Lizzy tunes.
One Short Life - is catchy enough. Although, its has too much of The Beatles - Come Together, by way of Alice Coopers - Welcome to my nightmare (shudder).
This might just be the way I am hearing it though.
I hear Iron Fist, getting recycled in Buried Alive.
Hints of a sped up Metropolis, in Time Is Right?
Heroes opens with the identical three chords of Quiet Riot's - Bang Your Head (1983)
The only conclusion can be, that Lem must have been horribly sober for the duration of MOTORIZER.
This album takes me way too far away from ACE OF SPADES (1980)
P.S. Having made a Metropolis connection, I spent most of my time listening to OVERKILL (1979), while going through MOTORIZER (2008).
Probably unfair to compare. It is what it is.
THE WORLD IS YOURS (2010)
Catchy and smooth but this is Motorhead, so, not good (Lem's vocals are great, though)
This album really drives home for me, a weak point in the later Motorhead.
Beginning post classic line up and growing evermore obvious as a fall-back mechanism on the albums going forward; that Godawful 90's "Metal" guitar sound.
(which, for me, was never "Metal" at all but that's another topic altogether)
Some tracks have some useful guitar tones, so maybe the "Metal" was added in the mix, to make some tracks more "commercial"?
Take - I know What You Need - Now imagine it without that "buzz" and add in more of the classic Lem bass "rattle" - et voilà - "Motorhead"!
AFTERSHOCK (2013) + BAD MAGIC (2015)
This pair can indeed be taken as part 1 and part 2, as BIL points out. I place them together because there is a tooth and nail battle going on within these two.
A valiant attempt at a return to form, for the Titan - Motorhead.
RELEASE THE LEM!
My apprehension going in, dissipated fairly quickly by both records openings!
There is no "dead man walking" here. This is the final charge, of the man with the "motor"- head.
This is my first time hearing these albums. I spent most of my time with the last of the Motorhead discography, listening to these two. And I still can't review them, in all honesty.
There is definitely fat that needed trimming but in the main, there is some fantastic stuff here, that demands long-term listening to fully appreciate.
Death Machine, Till The End, When The Sky Comes Looking For You and even Shoot Out All of Your Lights, all open up more, each time I listen to them.
So that's that, then.
Circle complete;
Thanks BIL, for putting in the work on the big list; viewtopic.php?f=3&t=53249&start=990

Re: What are you currently listening to?
My pleasure, and good on you for making it all the way through. (fucking hell, gotta sort out a Snaggletooth emoticon at some point)
Back On The Chain is Motorizer's real standout imo. Fat as hell bouncy Damage Case blues riff, a battering breakdown straight into a wailing solo, and some of Lemmy's most picturesque lyrics and vocals. Farcical yet ardently soulful.
Police don't shoot me down!
I don't wanna die in the dust!
I can't make the scene where I die like a dog with the crowd lookin' on in disgust!
Agreed on Aftershock/Bad Magic. They're respectively a killer record with a few fillers attached, and a very good record with same. And yeah, both kick off in absolutely feral form.
Victory or DIE!
You could probably hack together one really good 74 minute out of 'em, but the very concept is sacrilege, as is that runtime where Motorhead LPs are concerned. Death Machine is another late classic much along the lines of Chain... economically bluesy grit and a memorably plaintive tale, altogether darker. Strikes me as an anti-nuke song but any bloodbath works with the haunted delivery.
Looking for a man who used to be a friend of mine
Looking for someone to share the blame...
I consider The World Is Yours only really good for a couple guilty pleasures in Outlaw (Lem could self-plagiarise Deaf Forever on every LP and I wouldn't mind, just a catchy as fuck vocal melody) and Brotherhood of Man (which is more or less Orgasmatron mkII and likewise gimmicky, but I really dig the blasted soundscape and the bleak guitar lick accompanying the choruses). Having said that, World is one of the four I need to give a revisit, along with Rock n Roll, March or Die (oh god, March or Die) and Hammered.

Milieu - Improvisations For Hylian & Woodwinds
A minimal, yet melodic Ambient album a friend made while he was playing through the game. Would take breaks and create patches, or simple melodies to revisit as full tracks later. Very well done.

Re: What are you currently listening to?
I found a really cool album called L'Univers de la Mer from the 70s. It appears the only recordings available have significant popping and cracking due to the quality of the record itself.
Is there any way of fixing this in music? Is there anything that can be done post production to try and restore the original music to a better state? Or is it just something to accept as a consequence of the medium it was recorded on?

FUCK YEAH, another single from the upcoming Voivod album!
Two killer tracks by my boys
This is gonna be a great album, those 2 songs are legit really interesting. Some face melting shredding riffs, dissonance and atmospheric passages and deep sci-fi heavy prog. This is fucking Voïvod!
Holy fuck dat opening riff in Always Moving! Pure Machine-led-massacre-of-men depicting sonicscape. The perfect trash-prog abrasive riff.
Sounds perfectly "modern" too (not that I personally care about that). my younger buddy who's fave band is Revocation, was like "woah!"
