Great score! Updated.

Sorry for the delay, I was away from home for a while. Happens in summertime.

Klatrymadon - 844,600 - 14 - MAMEUI64 0.177

Replay

Just popping this here to push myself to keep going. I've had so many failed attempts at recording a 2-ALL at this point that I'm about to give up in despair. Something stupid has gone wrong every time.

(I've managed it on PS1 but with a lower score. Hoping to break 1m, which seems doable given that this 840k run still had stage 2-7 to go...)

Updated. If nothing else, you did beat my entry! I feel like trying to claim back my entry #12 :D
For some reason, the playstation version is more difficult than the arcade version. I suspect this is because of the slightly faster framerate.

Thanks! Yeah, I believe the game originally ran at 55hz rather than 60. Once you have figured out your routes, though, the slightly faster bullet speeds etc shouldn't make too much of a difference. It's mostly my own mistakes keeping me from the ALL at this point!

Klatrymadon - 911,500 - 15 - PSX

Best score yet, but another failed 2-ALL. This time I made a critical misjudgement - deciding to play it safe and not dip into the pit at the end of 2-7 to take out all the blue guys, and having this massively backfire as they all followed me to the right and rained rockets down on me just as I thought I was home free.

Edit: grainy attract/demo pic. I've just watched a video by Vludi in which they dealt with the same section the same way, so maybe I just shouldn't have panicked!

Thanks, MJR!

I'm trying to push the score up a bit on the PSX version, but for the time being I'm really happy with this current PB, which I managed to capture with OBS, if anyone fancies watching. It's a no-miss (though full of near-misses).

Klatrymadon - 1,071,800 - ALL - Shmupmame 4.2

Well done, I never managed 2-ALL myself, not even though I have the PCB.

My scoring strat was to milk stage 3 with all my early lives because stage 7 milk is too tough for me.

You beat me!

I could never in my life even get past Stage 13, if the boss one-shots you there, you are pretty much done for. Maybe I should watch some superplays some day and get to it.

I finally decided to remove Perikles score entry, as he hasn't returned on boards since the incident, and everything seems to point on the direction that his entries should be removed. Yeah, I was "bit slow" but it's done.

Timeless classic, fun to learn and it gets extremely tight in loop 2. Moving on to Leo next!

Hi, submitting my R-Type score: 1,548,700. This is a non auto-fire score played on PCB.

I'm fortunate to have a free-play Arcade down the road from me so I've been able to practice regularly for the last few years.

Screenshot of score here:

Full playthrough here with score at the end.

Hoping that's enough to get onto the high score table!

I'm working on ways to maximise my score further. The level 2-7 score accumulation tactic (suicide and repeat from the mid-point restart) is not practical without auto fire. I can do it about 1 in 5 times, so any accumulated score is usually wiped out by the loss of lives.

I've been experimenting with repeating 2-3 and may look into repeating 2-6 (or 1-6) which someone mentioned in an earlier post as a way to grab scores.

Any other tips on score accumulation, please let me know!

Oh, nice! Actual camera recording from PCB! We don't get too many of those 8) Congratulations for your hard-earned 2-ALL. I have owned the PCB for 20 years or more, but have never been able to reach that far - Stage 13 boss always destroyed me. With Mame save states I was able to scum save to lvl 14, but never further than that. But your video certainly inspires me to hook up my old PCB again.

If the top score holders are still active in this forum, they may be able to chime in with some tips..?

Score updated. Please note that I always need to have the last post on the thread, otherwise the email alerts won't work for me, and I may miss some important entries.

Thanks - it's been a long road to get my scores to this level and I'm chuffed to get on the score board here :-)

Ah yes, the level 5/13 boss, ruiner of many a perfect run. It's one of the reasons I love the game because you can never quite guarantee how it's going to play out on that level. Will the Blob (as I call it) be angry, or just float about and let you destroy it?!

I've got to the point now where I sort of 'understand' how it's going to move so I can defeat it most of the time even when it comes straight at you screaming. My tactic is to meet it midway bottom of the screen as it comes up, get a beam in, then back off shooting and doing small strafe up and down movements. 90% of the time the blob seems to act calm when I do it like this. Without realising it, I played the game for about 3 years set to difficult so I think that also helped me along.

I hope you do pick up the PCB and start playing again!
