Again, this is the former Tokyo resident in me, but whatever the fuck is going on in theiir heads is beyond me. Taketsuru Pure Malt (formerly 12 year) is 2000 yen a bottle in Japan. I find their pricing absolutely egregious. 17 and 21 are not too far off though, for some stupid reason.
Well, I certainly wouldn't complain if it was $20.

Basically to be that cheap in the US, it's gotta be something from here, at least from what I've seen. Evan Williams is decent for the price, with stuff being $15 or so. Maker's Mark is real nice at $20-25.

Well, formally a Canadian resident, I can appreciate the alcohol prices in the USA. $60 for a good single malt is pretty reasonable for me.
In Canada EVERY alcohol is marked up, even the domestic stuff! I recall seeing Crown Royal here in the US for $20, when it's being sold in Canada for $30! That doesn't compute! Why would Canadian-made Rye be more expensive than other countries??

Same for Scotch. Due to high alcohol taxes, it's more expensive in Scotland than in Germany. I remember buying Macallan 12 in Japan for around 23 bucks a bottle. Are taxes in Japan so low or what?

@opt2not Oh man, I'd love to try the 17 Taketsuru some day! The NAS stuff is good, so I imagine the 17 is fantastic.

Thanks for the heads up about Nikka from the Barrel, kane. I see it's listed at $65 at klwines which is usually one of the cheapest places here in CA. At that price, I'm not sure I'm going to go for it. I agree with GP that most J-whisky is overpriced here in the states. Scotch seems hit-or-miss. There are some good deals to be had if you shop around. Uigedail for $55 at klwines for example. I've been wanting to try some Talisker but haven't found it at a good price yet.

I'm sitting down with a glass of Laphroaig right now, playing some Castlevania Bloodlines. Enjoying life's simple pleasures. 8)

For alcohol, they are... although they are raising them on beer and similar drinks. Relative to other parts of the world, liquor is really cheap. There are great deals everywhere.

Just tried this last night for the first time. It's $60 here... will be getting some soon.

$50 at K&L is the cheapest you'll get it in the US. In Japan it's $30. :|

I picture the Castelvania series pairing well with a smokey Islay.

Out by the pool at the Hyatt waiting for CAX to start and enjoying a glass of Lagavulin 16

Also linked my buddy to this thread, as he wanted to bring a bottle for my birthday. He showed up with Glenfiddich 12 based on Gajin's rec, so we'll be dipping into that this weekend.

Nice, dunpeal! I'm about to pour a glass of Ardbeg Uigeadail. I'll be with you in spirit. One of these years I'd like to make the drive up to CAX. It looks like a great convention, but it seems to always fall on the weekend of my daughter's birthday.

Castlevania and Dark Souls are a perfect match.

Well well boys, they didn't have the Coffey Grain in. However they had one of the first good prices I've ever seen there (outside of stuff that's cheap anyway). Glen Garioch 12 for $50. Even had the silly outer box. I think that's even close to UK pricing. Looking forward to trying it out.

Edit: This is a whiskey you need to try if you can get ahold of it. Delicious.

I have little experience w/ many of the Glen's, save Glenfiddich & Glenlivet. Trying to try up my non-peaty game though, so these are on the list.

I've recently grabbed way too much shit to list, but I will try. Whenever I travel out of state I always try to find a booze shop and see what they have since Illinois can butt fuck you so hard.

Japan:
Due to Japan's lax laws of selling alcohol out of a private collection, Yahoo Japan has loads of cheap goodies, so long as you can pick them up there. (Shipping them to the US is a whore... basically unpossible). I had the following waiting for me at a friends place:
-Oban Distiller's Edition
-Talisker Distiller's Edition (forgot which year but 2014 or 2015 I think)
-Caol Ila Distiller's Edition
-Laphroaig 18

The only one that wasn't fantastic was the Oban. I dig the 14, and even Little Bay more. The Laphroaig 18 was fantastic. Why the fuck did they stop making that? (Other than money). It was not cheap by any stretch but I am very, very happy w/ the purchase. It'll sit around for special occasions. I need to do a side by side w/ the current Cairdeas release to see if they even compare.

Milawukee:
Not only is Wiscon sales tax half of that of the Illinois, I found a dope ass liquor store near where I was staying. They didn't have a huge selection, but what they had was well priced.
-Oban 18
-Oban Little Bay
-Clynelish 14
-Dalwhinnie 15
-Dalwhinnie Distiller's Edition

All of those I paid significantly under "normal" prices -- some even below the cheapest you'll find on wine-searcher.

Oban: The 18 I grabbed before heading into Burning Man but didn't open it until I got back. Fucking hell -- amazing. And it's a limited edition so no way is it going to be around much longer. Very good. Pricey most of the time so seeing it for $80 I jumped. Wouldn't mind having a bottle lying around for Armageddon. LIttle Bay I got for sheckles. Some places price this the same as 14 ($75 or so). Which I will agree is pretty ridiculous. That store had it for $36, which makes it a great daily. I can't just pop into a store and grab it for that though.

The Dalwhinnie: The 15 I picked up b/c multiple reports say Yamazaki 12 is a virtual clone of it. Very similar, and can be had much cheaper. Most Scotch snobs write it off as "boring / not complex" but I don't always have to sit there and think of what's going on taste wise. Not usually even. The Distiller's Edition was a let down -- usually costs a shitload more but the one I got was pretty cheap.

Clynelish: Only had one try but it's quite nice. Not peaty, but not entry level stuff. There's a lot to take in, and I defo like it.

Nice on the cheap gets. Oban 18 for $80 is a steal.

The Dalwhinnie 15 looks interesting after reading about it. I'll have to see if I can get it here.

I'm a huge fan of Glenfarclas and Glengarioch. Just absolutely wonderful, and fairly priced imo. I think we have fairly different tastes, but I'd be interested to know what you think of them once you try them.

There were 2 more, and if I hadn't specifically been looking for the other ones I mentioned, I"d have just bought them all. Still debating. It's actually only like a 90 minute to 2 hour drive. We also found some dope ass bars, so we'll probably make it a couple times a year thing and I'll just drop my load at those shops.

I've looked at Glenfarclas but from what I've read from the 10 is a bit underwhelming. Will probably go for the 12 but will wait until I can get a good deal. $55 at my local... seems it can be had for much less in other places.

Ha, if I was up there, I'd buy them both. :)

Yes, start at the 12, I really like it. It gets better from there. From the 12 and on, they are all generally worth it and well priced for the quality you get. The 21 is good but the 25, ohhhh baby.

Big fan of the Glen Garioch 12 for the price as well. At $45 or so it's one of the best values in whiskey imho. I don't think you'll be disappointed. I wasn't as big on the "founders reserve".

All in all, they are two of my favorite distilleries. Really like their work.

If I can't find a place to try this on it's own I'll grab a bottle when I'm at Binny's next. I need to get a good ways through the stuff I bought above first. :)
love it as is, but I recently tried the 22yr limited version they just released, it is extraordinary, but can't find me a bottle yet...
wine-searcher.com is a great place to start!
