XRGB-mini Framemeister Optimal Nintendo NES Settings?

Post by erik343 »

Hello,

I am messing around with my XRGB-mini Framemeister. I am having fun playing my NES Nintendo console on it. Can anybody tell me what are the best settings to use for the Framemeister (with my NES)? I tried some from a youtube video, and am not sure if I like the results lol. I also turned off the sharpness on my TV completely.
And, I already searched this forum for the answer, and found no results.

Thanks.

Hi,

You can try the FBX profiles here, there should be a NES RGB one to use.

I tried the profiles, and for my NES and SNES, they all look very pretty!
I found that the 720p profiles works best, because 720 % 240 == 0
The remainder of 720/240 is zero!

Just wondering though...
What do all the items in the VISUAL_SET do?
Such as:
H_POS
V_POS
H_WIDTH
V_WIDTH
SKEW
AUTO_SCALAR
H_SCALER
V_SCALER

I am having lots of fun with this device lol.
Thanks.

Hi,

There is a dedicated thread all about the Framemeister on this forum so I’d recommend posting your queries there ;) the settings you mention are to do with screen position and image scaling.

Here are some useful links.
Xrgb Wiki:

Firmware updates:

I hope this helps, I’ve had mine for nearly 4 years and love it!

The 1080p profiles are still technically sharper, obviously 240p does not divide into 1080 but the 4x profiles simply have black bars at the top and bottom while the 5x ones cut some pixels off the top and bottom. These are normally in the overscan area anyway, so at 5x games will fill much more of a 16:9 screen and be very sharp.

Iirc, the POS settings move the image around, the width settings adjust width and height (I.e. aspect ratio), h_scaler and h_scaler adjust sharpness in the vertical and horizontal planes and auto scaler sets h and v scalers to specific presets.

If you are using FBX profiles, these settings have been painstakingly tweaked so I doubt you would achieve better results by changing them. Obviously feel free to have a go, but in my experience the size and position ones can be pretty awkward. Bear in mind the profiles are designed to scale to exact pixels so if you mess with them you will probably end up with scaling artefacts like shimmering.

Also if your NES is not RGB modded you will not be able to achieve the results you may have seen online. It is still a major improvement obviously.

Thanks for the imformation :P

I forgot to mention that my TV is a TCL Roku 4K tv 49S403.

It supports 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, 2160p

And, it can upscale perfect from these resolution too.
It just seems that 720p looks better for some reason, not sure why...

If it was an HD TV although, maybe the 1080p would look better than 720p?

I found an interesting article that recommends only using your monitor's native resolution:

Well "better" is subjective. Some people prefer 720p because it has thicker scanlines and the slight blurring can provide more of a CRT like effect, but 1080p should have sharper/clearer pixels.

It is possible that your TV scales 720p better somehow than 1080p but would be surprised. Using your native resolution is nice and advisable when you can, but your native resolution is 2160p and the Framemeister can't do that.

Also TVs are often much better equipped for handling non native resolutions than monitors are.

Thanks.

I have a 1080p computer monitor that I will also try things on.
Also, I will play with the Framemeister profiles and settings.
I will post back here if I find anything interesting.
