Re: post here if YOU LIek VIDEO GAMES!!!!!!
Are all of the flaws of the NES MG also in the JP FC version? Also, while the manual translation isn't reflected in the game itself, I was under the impression that some clues in the game were mistranslated?
Re: post here if YOU LIek VIDEO GAMES!!!!!!
They're practically the same unfortunately. The NES version has some extra graphic details (the codec screen has a more complex look and some of the parked vehicles were replaced by civilian models), but that's really it. Jun Furano said in an interview published by HG101 said that they were forced to develop the game on an UNROM instead of one of their VRC mappers, which is why they had cut out the Metal Gear boss at the end. I'm guessing they made the Famicom version with the NES localization already in mind (which makes sense given the popularity of military-themed action games at the time).BrianC wrote:Are all of the flaws of the NES MG also in the JP FC version?
The funny thing is that the NES version is pretty much an accurate translation of the Famicom version, right down to not even bothering correcting its mistakes. When you call Schneider on the roof of Building No. 1, he gives you the wrong location for the Bomb Blast Suit. It's really in Building No. 4 in both versions and not on the second floor as he says. You would think they would've corrected that or even put in a clue on how to get through the jungle maze, but instead they made some trivial graphical improvements. Also, while the manual translation isn't reflected in the game itself, I was under the impression that some clues in the game were mistranslated?

Oh no, they certainly aren't. Just having fun with the most derangedly, uncharitably scrubby strawman I could conjure.Vanguard wrote:I like RPG elements when they add to a game's depth rather than detract from it. If it's
ENCOUNTERED AN ASSAILANT
GYNOUG DICKMAN: COVENANT
1: targeted buckshot in ur fuckin face 2: spawn sniper tanks up ur ass 3: Bendy Taito DickLazor
And the solution is "click on X more gophers for DEF boost to tank through his undodgeable shitwalls / buy 99 bombs" etc, the game can eat my fuckin ass. If you're instead encouraged to experiment with your ship attributes and equipment, weigh up macro v micro-dodging, zako suppression vs concentrated boss smashing, maybe pile everything into a Bit for some bizarre high-risk maneuver, that's fine of course. Lots of good STGs and action games (and RPGs!) do that already.

You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

One of my favourite print ads from the ol' days.
Along with this buffet of manliness:
And for Contra/Metal Gear crossover:
Commonly encountered in the pages of MAHVEL and Archie. Ah, smell of bubblegum and crummy paperstock.

Also as a kid I can't believe no one figured out Ultra = Konami. In retrospect it was kind of obvious.

Re: post here if YOU LIek VIDEO GAMES!!!!!!
That ad was one of Tom Dubois' earlier works with Konami, who incidentally drew the packaging art for Super C and Snake's Revenge (and pretty much all of the U.S. packaging artwork for Konami games from the late-'80s/early-'90s period). (I still don't know who made the actual packaging art for the original Metal Gear though, but I'm willing to bet it was the same artist who drew Jackal and Dark Adventure).
I'm surprised that they used his work on the Famicom version of Super Contra too. I'm guessing Super C, like Snake's Revenge, was made primarily with the U.S. market in mind (they didn't even bother to use one of their VRC mappers for the FC version like they did with the original FC Contra).
Can't speak for anyone else, but it was always pretty obvious to me that they were the same company (what with Konami's name popping up in the copyrights text of every Ultra Games release).Stevens wrote: Also as a kid I can't believe no one figured out Ultra = Konami. Re: post here if YOU LIek VIDEO GAMES!!!!!!
That was my assumption, but it's honestly very easy these days to reach conclusion that RPG elements are inherently predatory or exist only to enable/supplement/obscure bad game design, because that's true for most of 'em.BIL wrote:Oh no, they certainly aren't. Where can I order my Anita Sarkeesian fuck pillow?
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
Re: post here if YOU LIek VIDEO GAMES!!!!!!
I am so glad that without Google I have no idea who/what that is.

Speaking of things, on watching the (so-so) 1989/1988 series of Mission Impossible, I realized that the Konami (or Ultra?) game was a tie-in as well. I just noticed the Ration is missing from the Metal Gear ad. You gon be hungry motherfucker.
No smokes either. Going into battle hungry and nicotine-deprived is a sure-fire recipe for tragedy.

The enemy uniform, the keycards and the iconic cardboard box are all missing as well, and probably a few more items I don't remember offhand. The suppressor is also missing, but that's practically useless in the NES version.
Re: post here if YOU LIek VIDEO GAMES!!!!!!
...suddenly I wonder if anyone's done a spoof of that ad featuring items like the near-iconic porno mag.
