It's just because it's new. In 10 years everyone here will love Shin Godzilla. Movie is pretty great.

I understand this.
Argento's conception of what a "nightmare" looks like, is not universal, of course. For my own part, I find his approach difficult to engage with. No doubt, I will try again.
EmperorIng wrote:I'll reiterate what Mischief and Steamflogger said that the first at least was meant to be taken seriously and is a very well-done movie. Forgive the dated rubber suit and the melodramatic love triangle (characteristic in films of the time I feel) and you'll see some real emotion, melancholy, and despair on film. It's worth it.
I was aware of the Nuclear allegory but I was not aware that the original film was a serious one. I will add it to the list, for sure.
Hopefully it is not too melancholy, or it will banished to the same unwatched stack as Grave of the Fireflies.

The American hoo-rah feel of the movie also rubs me the wrong way, but maybe I crave more cynicism in my serious movies.

2014 - The nuclear testing was really heroic USA trying to save the world! People complaining about it just didn't understand!

Another Thin Man. Awesome movie, with suspense, murder, heavy drinking, wild parties, and Shemp!

What movie can you point to from 2008 that was panned then and now considered even good? And we're not even talking borderline. Shin Godzilla is an encapsulation of Japan's biggest foul: over production. (Don't get me wrong. Tons of other bad shit in there, too).

Dead End (2003) - Jean-Baptiste Andrea, Fabrice Canepa

Low buget horror/comedy/"road movie", with Ray Wise and Lyn Shaye.
These two are just made for campy horror and their married couple schtick elevates this film above its station.

I man-crush on Ray Wise. Loved him in Twin Peaks... Fargo Season 3 was next level.

Wise has the face of a comic book character come to life (and I mean that in a good way)
Some much animated expression. His comic timing is good, too.

Always a pleasure to watch.

I never got the impression that Shin Godzilla was panned but at a quick glance of notable 2008 movies I spotted Quantum Of Solace, a Bond flick many fans have come full circle on. I've even heard some people claim it's Craig's OHMSS.

I never noticed anything about it that made me feel like it was over produced. In what way do you mean? The story was concise enough for me to get it on first watch & none of the sfx scenes seemed gratuitous. I felt it had a clever sense of humor about humanity paired with a deeply ominous vibe that really made one appreciate the threat of something like Godzilla from a ground level perspective.

"DON'T TOUCH ME, MAAAN!"

edit: hmm, the three of us had a similar exchange not long ago, down to my posting the above pic. You two down to start the official Shumps Forum Ray Wise Appreciation Society?

Meanwhile, I think it's time to pit Mr. Wise against a new, even greater horror of collapsing rubbery flesh than poor Emil. ^_~

It's fine to not like Shin Godzilla but it definitely wasn't panned. It's usually rated pretty highly from every source I follow, anyway (Kinema Jumpo for example). Everything Anno's done is great, including Cutie Honey (especially Cutie Honey).

The characters were straight out of Japanese daytime TV. Dialogue... delivery... expressions... everything. It couldn't be more cookie cutter.

Red Sparrow. 3/5

Nice cinematography, decent acting, not enough satisfaction.

Jurassic world - Fallen Kingdom

Unfortunately this movie sticks to the main theme done in the previous movies a bit too closely. People run, jaws snap at their feet, people get through small holes, dino does some carnage to get through, rinse and repeat. I don't know why the JP franchise needs to put kids into the mix all the time, its obvious by its ratings that a kid of 6 isn't going to get chomped. There is a cool scene at the beginning but the rest just seems run of the mill stuff. I wanted to see that under water beast be taken out by a submarines torpedo missile. I mean that would be new and adventurous for the franchise.. But no. Some of the themes of this movie have been done before slightly differently in previous movies.

Its a 6 from me.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Jurassic world: Fallen Kingdom
A modest adventure plot, with the least epic dinosaurs ever and a convoluted bad ending meant to allow further sequels.
Notable because two dinosaurs are the most charismatic main characters, even if the point of view follows a group of good humans and for doing a good job with scenery and environments (for example, look at the many purposes of the Triceratops skull in the museum hall).
Apart from the fantasy-grade genetic engineering, very pathetic compared to the original novel, there are serious inconsistencies in dinosaur size and weight (probably due to the abundance of indoor scenes) and weak attempts to have some style (e.g. shots of shadows, of characters in implausibly aligned mirrors, etc.)

Diebuster... trash.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Julius Caesar (1953) - Joseph L. Mankiewicz

Its been a couple of decades since I last saw this.
First re. Mankiewicz; For an old time director, I've always found him fairly timeless.
This is a fine production.

Gielgud as Cassius; plays it "classically" (unsurprising) with incongruous effect.
Bad decision, as far as I'm concerned (and that barnet! fuck me!)
I always got the impression, that the great stage actor was a little "agitated" on this film (Brando?).
Compare Gielgud's performance to Deborah Kerr's, as Portia. Kerr, also opts to play it as if she were in a stage production but she carries it off flawlessly.

James Mason as Brutus. Very confident in this part and production. Rightfully so. Fantastic.

Marlon Brando as Mark Antony. Sweet mother of God!
Brando is at his most "natural" and "interesting" here. In other words you get to witness the greatest actor of all time being the greatest actor of all time.

One of the only negatives for me, is Louis Calhern as Caesar. Never quite worked, for me.

Essential viewing.

Sad to hear that, but my expectations were never high (high! high! high!) anyway. Maybe someday I'll watch to have my own conclusions. Maybe Anno is just not that great at rebuilding his old work

Diebuster wasn't directed by Anno though. It's from the guy who did FLCL. I haven't seen Diebuster, but at least he does great work under Anno, as shown by Evangelion 2.22.

Ah, that explains why I thought it had many of the same flaws as FLCL, most notably throwing tons of wacky shit at you to try to hide the fact there is no enjoyable substance behind it.

DieBuster's finale was great though, especially if you've watched Gunbuster before (which you really should be doing anyways), but otherwise, I didn't click with anything else. Characters and situations being way too over-the-top for their own good, some of the ugliest mecha designs I've ever seen, and an entire episode (out of only 6) wasted on a minor secondary character I don't care about.

Well he certainly shit the mattress on that one. Argued earlier in this thread, as the original was a product of it's time, so was the sequel. Call me an old bastard, but that era was far less interesting or edgy. Perhaps b/c it was the start of lost decade 2 in Japan, but art and animation quality were nothing to write home about. The substance of the story, even less. Instant fail.

So I just got back from watching Incredibles 2. I enjoyed it as much as the first movie, though there are some things that bother me.
Spoiler
The Underminer only shows up in the prologue, he makes his escape and is never seen or mentioned again. Also, the plot is somewhat predictable, we know who the main antagonist of the movie was going to be.
