Non-shmup (Sega Saturn) games with shmupping in them ?

Post by guigui »

Trying to gather everything that is or looks like a shmup on the Sega Saturn, I'm seeking non-shmup games that have shmupping in them. Those shmup phases should have forced scrolling (either hori, vert, rear, isometric), while controlling a character shooting things to destroy other things.

List and brief description of the know Sega Saturn titles below, can you help me add some ? Also feel free to discuss such games on other systems.

* Keyio Yugetikai (Flying Squadron 2). Stages alternate between platforming and horizontal shmupping.

* Ojousama Tokyo Express. Adventure game in which a small arcade room is available, on hori shmup in here.

* Steamgear Mash. 3d isometric platform game with a robot shooting at stuff. Stages 3 and 5 are shmup stages similar to Viewpoint.

* Minisuka Police. Succession of mini-games (where you help police ladies in mini-skirt ?!), one of them is a vertical shmup.

* Magic Knight Rayearth. Concludes with a shmup boss.

* Suchie Pai Adventure : Doki Doki Nightmare opens with having the player get through a stage of a vertical scrolling shmup entitled Ninja Ja-Ja Maru-kun (seeing as it begins with you hanging out at the You & Me arcade).

* Tokimeki Memorial - Forever With You - Konami dating sim game, in which you can access two shmups game from an arcade room. Those games are Twinbee Time Attack (caravan mode in Twinbee setting), and Psyth (horizontal Konami style shmup, looks pretty neat).

Also check this article for Konami hidden shmups in Tokimeki games on other platform : http://blog.hardcoregaming101.net/2011/ ... orial.html

* Zero Divide 3D fighting game, in which a mini-game based on Phalanx can be unlocked. Unlock method here :
https://www.consoledatabase.com/cheats/ ... erodivide/

* Super Tempo platform game (expensive). Shmup game in an arcade room.

* Creature Shock (US version only) Shmup rearview stage

* Mortal Kombat Trilogy (US version only) Shmup interlude

* Ultimate Mortal Kombat (US version only) Shmup interlude

* Scud the Disposable Assasin (US version only) Shmup stage

Idol Janshi Suchie Pai: Doki Doki Nightmare opens with having the player get through a stage of a vertical scrolling shmup entitled Ninja Ja-Ja Maru-kun (seeing as it begins with you hanging out at the You & Me arcade).

In fact, plenty of dating sims seem to have shmup mini-games... especially if they contain a game center that the player can visit.

Thank you for the input. Yes I fear dating sims are filled with little shmups phases. Need a dating sim specialist to complete the list !

I renamed the game as Suchie Pai Adventure : Doki Doki Nightmare, since the Idol Janshi series are Board/Majhong games. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, do you happen to know if the actual Ninja Jajamaru-kun game has shmup phases in it ? Looks like a mix-and-match of different gameplays to me, but is shmupping here ?

Nope, you are correct on the title. I'm just used to calling the series by its main title but this game is an off-shoot.

Unfortunately, I've never played the original Ninja Jajamaru-kun. Just the version at the beginning of Doki Doki Nightmare.

The tvtropes site has a nice long list of games containing shmups phases (nothing new on the Sega Saturn though, it has less games listed on this system than we already do) :
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/M ... ShmupLevel*

And also this article about shmups minigames in the Tokimeki Memorial series by Konami. I fear images are down though, and I cannot decipher which games are available on the Saturn, if anyone know the Tokimeki games enough to help :

Nice, so it seems that 2 Konami shooters are hidden in Tokimeki Memorial Forever With Me on the Saturn. Some others are hidden on other systems' Tokimeki games. List updated.

* Tokimeki Memorial - Forever With You - Konami dating sim game, in which you can access two shmups game from an arcade room. Those games are Twinbee Time Attack (caravan mode in Twinbee setting), and Psyth (horizontal Konami style shmup, looks pretty neat).

As discovered in the "complete shmup PSX list" thread, it appears that the Saturn version of Zero Divide also has the Phalanx mini game :

* Zero Divide 3D fighting game, in which a mini-game based on Phalanx can be unlocked. Unlock method here :
