I happened to stream this run live for a new segment I'm running called The Game Knight. A show where I try in earnest to 1cc crap. I failed on Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Psychic 5 and redeem myself with a personal best in Flying Shark. If you'd like to watch the run it starts here:

http://www.twitch.tv/radiopsi/b/366199295 @ 23:30

It was pretty epic considering I hadn't played this in months.

No-miss loop 1, no-miss until middle of stage 5 in loop 2, chain death to last boss. Bit miffed that I forgot to record an input. Gloriously good run though, I'm really happy.

Heh, I think I'm getting addicted to this. I died once in 1-4 and then one-lifed it all the way to the end of loop 4, where I was summarily eaten by sharks.

This is a fun game. First time making the loop. Does Hishouzame reset your bombs to three at each level too?

yep, that's just something this game does. probably has to do with how scoring for bomb stock is set up.

per recent tourney, i played some flying shark... didn't end too well. i can make it to stage 5 consistently, but whatever. as you can see from my hishouzame score, checkpoint milking owns hard.

The difficulty is kinda strange, maybe it's memorization-heavy. I've been playing over the past few days getting near the end, 99%, 98%, then tonight I passed the loop with four lives in stock.

So I finally figured out what's with the dipswitches. Export versions do not have lower dips like so many Toaplan games do; Hishozame is supposed to have 50K/150K:

-This site is probably the only resource on the planet with dips for Japan arcade releases. According to them, all dips are supposed to be off, and 50K/150K is part of that.
-The only decent port of the game is the FM Towns port, which also uses 50K/150K and which is where my initial suspicions came from.

For any Hishozame players who've used 70K/200K, please mention this and I'll at least make a note of it... kinda don't want to make a separate board but I can. Of course, I will also remove any scores on request.

Thank you for supporting this absolute trainwreck!

My usual dry & garrulous explanation on why more people should play it is located in the video description of the Hishouzame run. Needless to say I had a blast. I'm not sure whether I prefer Kyuukyoku Tiger or Hishouzame, it's a close one. It bears mentioning that Toaplan started with imperturbably solid games such as these and then created Vimana and Tatsujin Ou later. Fascinating.

Oh, and steer away from the NES Sky Shark. It's horrible. FC Kyuukyoku Tiger is a valiant effort and FC Tiger-Heli is quite great (for the first loop, the flicker is unbearable afterwards), Sky Shark is terrible, though.

I've started to like this game a lot more than I used to, and this is the result of some recent credits (no savestates used).
I felt like a lot of score came from the battleship checkpoint in 2-3 which I managed to figure out with my remaining lives.

My first 2-All happened to be a 3-All :D, had some neat recoveries too.
Love this game, I like how some enemy position change depending on the position of your plane or sprite count, keeps it fresh.

Just dropping off a day 1 clear, despite the low score. I'm still not sure how I feel about this game. It's a vast improvement over Tiger Heli, but there's still aspects that I'm just not down to clown with. I'm unsatisfied with the score, but I was just forcing a quick clear for today. I need more time with this before I can pass my ultimate judgement.

I've got a top 10 score right now on Kyukyoku Tiger, and recently decided to spend some time with Sky Shark. I must say, I really love these older Toaplan games. The music is amazing. These games feel so well designed, the tanks and boats give so much challenge and I like the slower ship speed.

Come back to it after a little layoff. Really good to let things marinate in muh brain and it goes to show you can take a bit of a break and still come back. Go at your own speed! It's really reassuring.

Was real close to the end of loop 3, managed to figure out the recovery from the big boats section at the beginning of that loop.

That's a real nice score, trap15! I've been playing this one for a few weeks and I've only gotten to where I was a few years ago, middle of the second loop. I just get destroyed on 2-3.

End of 4-5, the two big boats section seems impossible to recover from here.

Had set a goal of 10m, I think I'm going to re-calibrate to going for area 999, because... so long...

Nice to see some activity on this game. Been playing this in a tournament. I know i can easily counter-stop this game but the difference between me practicing and actually playing are always wild-cards. I can do all sections with no issues but i always find myself changing my method up on the 2-3 tanks. I like no-bombing the first tank but i always do something different and i have no method for that. I'll come back to this another day.
