Do not use the Japan 4/14 version.

I have no idea how the auto fire works, but enable it if you really want.
The autofire affects how the strong, B-button 'bubble' shot works. It doesn't change how the main shot (A button) works. When autofire is off (default), holding down B will fire off the full clip of bubbles as soon as it recharges (so holding A+B will alternate between your main shot and the strong shot, firing the entire clip of the strong shot when the bar fills to max). When autofire is on, holding down B will constantly fire a small spray of bubbles as soon as even a tiny bit of the strong shot bar fills. This causes a constant spray of slow-moving, weaker bubble shots, rather than alternating between main fire and a full strong attack.

This is actually one of the few shmups where autofire off is much, much better. It seems more damaging and useful to launch full strong shot chains (you can get unintentional high multiplier kills too even if you're not focused on scoring) rather than constantly spit out them out singly as slow and weak ones the way the autofire on version works (which will never get you much of a multiplier value if that's all you use).

If memory serves I used 1P side with a route of BCA. I don't think I ever managed to get a replay for that run to check for sure though. :(

Haven't played this game for shit (last time was over a year ago) but just got it back, put in a credit and cleared.
An ALL is an ALL even if the score sucks.

Picked this game up a couple of weeks ago, haven't had the greatest deal of time to play but so far progress is good.

Prior to this my record was like 8mil so I can't complain :V

Hey again, Despatche! Yeah, just wanted to post this 1st 1cc of ESP Ra. De. that I got, as of last night! :)

Yusuke Sagami
VioletHatPurple - 18,730,970 - ALL (ABC) - 1P - Shmupmame 4.2 (Japan (4/21) Version) - Video - Screenshot - Replay inp File

I quite like how this run turned out, I must say! Most of everything went the way it should, for the most part anyway, to where I even No Miss all the way up to the Stage 5-2 Boss herself! Pretty pleased about that! :)

Been playing this fantastic game quite a bit lately and I'm happy to post my highest score :)! This game is super fun! Not to mention great feel and incredibly addicting scoring mechanics. I hope to keep improving my score however Zelda: BotW has slowly consumed my life :)

Took me a long time until I beat this POS of a final boss. My problem is that I try to play too risky rather than to simply clear the game :D I was honestly surprised by my score. After beating the boss and before the bonus it was 15.9m, and I had all extend boxes and 2 lifes in stock.

Congrats! Esprade is indeed one of those games where the absolute first thing you should do is get a no miss.

I no-missed the game up until the first of the several small energy bars of the final boss, then I lost 2-3 lives because I got nervous. I think the very final pattern of the last boss is rather nerve-wrecking. Even if you think you got her under control, it can change in one second if her pattern sprays in an unfortunate way, and you can't bomb. The last pattern was probably what stopped me from the 1cc for the past few days, as the rest of the game was already doable without missing lives consistently.

Updated.

Still amazes me that this is one of the few games where people are willing to play different characters.

See, in most games, people just pick the best character, sometimes the second best, and everyone else gets left behind. This is usually coupled with no splits for characters, so that one character dominates the tables. This is why every now and then you get someone asking for character splits (even in games where it's insane to do so like Batrider), and why I started doing splits in general.

Esprade is one of the games where people did not do this. They recognized that J-B was probably the most beginner friendly, but were like "whatever this other character is cool too".

I think the ESP series in general was always very balanced in their character choices. It wasn't as obvious a trade-off as in DDP etc. ("strong focus or weak spread") but more up to personal preference. The same goes for Guwange, I think.

For Esprade, I tried all characters and even though Irori appears to have the weakest shot, I really like how quickly she can move and how precise I can aim the bubbles. She seemed like the "obvious choice" to me after my initial tests, and I was surprised so many people choose to play with JB 5th and Yusuke.

Thanks!
This is a good challenging game, I am liking play.

Did a random run with Yusuke Sagami to test. It seems a way easier score with this character.

Third_strike - 21'048'450 - ALL (ACB) - 2P - ShmupMAME v4.2 (Japan) 2 lives in stock/5 boxes lives

But I am still playing JB

Third_strike -25'541'820- ALL (BCA) -2P - ShmupMAME v4.2 (Japan) 1 live in stock/5 boxes lives

My previous score with JB was 3 lives in stock and 6 boxes lives.
