Has anyone compared console's 720p output vs 1080i output on an HD CRT such as this one?
I understand that 480p content is placed in a 540p window with overscan applied. However, if it is fed a 720p signal, does it downscale the video to 540p or upscale to 1080i?
Furthermore, if a console like the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii U is set to 1080i, but the game's rendering resolution is 720p, does the console upscale to 1080p and then outputs the video as interlaced?

This handles 720p on half the resolution. It should be 1280 x 720 and it only displays the vertical resolution and blurs the horizontal and displays in 853 x 720.
It's 1080i is even worse because of the line tremble and while it should display 1920x1080i it displays 853x1080i which I would prefer the 720p option.
It's truest hd borderless full screen resolution is 853x480p. Although 800 x600 is its highest pixel resolution it is a 4:3 aspect.

I also wanted to add that 800x600 while being a 4:3 aspect does support anamorphic widescreen in certain pc titles which would give you the best maximum resolution and proper aspect.
A good example is GTA 5 PC which supports SVGA 800x600 but allows you to change aspect if you stretch the 4:3 to a 16:9 ratio.

Hi-Scan Trinitron televisions display 853 horizontal. The 34XBR960 is Super Fine Pitch which displays 1440 horizontal.
I don't use 720p with my SFP KD-30XS955, UNLESS I want to show Windows' desktop where single-pixel horizontal lines are usual.
These sets' true highest progressive vertical rez is 540p. 720p is a kludge though it adds no perceptible lag.
