Mame versions

Which mame version is the best for shmups ? the obvious choices are shmupmame and the newest version of mame, but shmupmame is based on an older version and the development has stopped. Which one has better compatibility ?

Newer versions of MAME will *always* be more accurate and *more* resource hungry.

I don't really see the point of another thread for this matter, hopefully this can be merged into the others.
