Other than that I had a pretty good stage 1: I came out with a x370,000,000ish multiplier, and finished the game with about x800,000,000. I still need to practice the better routes for stage 1, since right now a better stage 1 will still provide a higher score potential over practicing any of the other stages. I also need to take a closer look at the stage 1 boss as I actually came into the boss with a higher multiplier than Battletoad (about x108,000,000) but I still ended the stage with less, so I'm dropping medals somewhere.
Nice score Marus, keep going! :)
Back then I was actually very surprised how far I could push my own score. I first I hadn't really expected to beat Plasmo's score at all. But 40 quadrillion should definitely be in your reach now.

Thanks! Originally I was just going for the 1CC since I haven't beaten a Takumi game before, but I'm really enjoying playing this game for score. I'm not sure if I have any long-term goals but I'm going to keep playing as long as the game's fun.

^It's definitely a gem!
Finally made it to stage 5!! and to quadrillions! I feel like I should be posting my score in scientific notation. lol.

2,487,088,263,979,870 - LordHypnos - Romi/Sparrow (RF) - 5 - DC - pic

That's approximately 2.5*10E15

I think the next step will be to try to figure out a route for stage 5, while still practicing stage 4, because I was actually at 0 lives and bombs at the end of stage 4. Also bombing more often would definitely benefit me, as a lot of bombs went to waste in this run. I did manage to use a few of them in the first 3 stages, at least, and actually no missed until stage 4 finally. Progress.

Nice improvement! I'm really glad Takumi color-coded the digits in the score counter - otherwise I'd have no clue what kind of pace any run is at lol.

Arcade Mode (Dreamcast):
42,465,142,993,844,170 - marus-MPO - Chery Stork (RF) - ALL - DC - Video

I decided to setup a stream, and managed to get this run recorded! I practiced stage 1 some more and the best multiplier I've been able to get so far is x530 million, although I'm still not very consistent at it yet. In this run I exited stage 1 with a x432 million multiplier, which isn't the best I've done but still a good improvement over my last PB. I didn't make any major mistakes for the rest of the run - I got the stage 5 pod and didn't time out any of the bosses. I decided to play it safe and bomb spam the last boss rather than milk it for more medals just to make sure I got the 40 quadrillion PB.

I think at this point I need to start actually optimizing stages 2, 3, and 4. I think if I learn better routes for those stages and then grind until I get a good stage 1 then I can eventually get a run where I max out the multiplier.

From trying to get a run that actually made it past the fifth stage, I learned that I really am still pretty shaky on stage 4. I also have trouble not dying at least once in the first 3 stages, though usually not in the same place. I still have a ways to go before getting a clear. Either that or I'll need to have a day when my mind is at 100%.

While I'm posting to this thread, do you have any tips for how to consistently get the safespot in stage 7 to work? I can't figure it out. Sometimes it works, but only about 50% of the time, probably.

It varies from character to character. Kart and Limi have it easy because you can just go all the way into the bottom-right corner, but with Chery you have to go into the corner and then do a small tap left because her hitbox is positioned higher than the other characters. I haven't practiced with Romi but if you're not getting it 100% of the time then you probably have to do something similar with her too.

Keep working on that clear! IMO stage 7 isn't actually that bad once you get the route down - the first phase is still pretty random but once you get past that you can cheese out the next two phases fairly consistently. I actually think stage 6 is harder, because if you kill any of the various parts or end a phase at the wrong time then it can really screw you over.

EDIT: Something I forgot to mention about the stage 7 safespot is that during the pattern before the safespot, you want to stay in the bottom-right corner. This will consistently force the boss to move to the correct position for the safespot to work.

^Thanks! That's quite helpful. I'll bet it's a similar thing to Chery, just given that Romi's hitbox feels weirdly high up to me. I'll do some experimentation. Nice thing is that you get the same couple of patterns several times in a row which means that you get a few chances to practice it before you need to restart the stage.

Arg! So close! If it weren't for a stupid death in stage 5 I would have gotten the clear for sure! This game could really use any extends at all, even if it were just something like the pity extend in original Giga Wang. As it stands I literally need to no miss through the 5th stage to stand a chance (no bombs in 6 or 7, and I need to use at least two bombs in each, I'm pretty sure)

6,522,487,123,231,790 - LordHypnos - Romi / Sparrow - 7 - DC - pic

I have a question, speaking of bombs. I almost always need to use a bomb on this pattern, but on rare occasions I will end up getting a dodgeable pattern (like Kollision's video) or being able to regen my shield quick enough to use it (also happens in this video. He gets a truncated pattern for the first repetition, and then is able to regen, and shield the second repetition). Is there a way to actually guarantee that pattern, at least that you (Marus) or anyone else who might be reading this thread knows? Because it just seems like a waste of a bomb, which are a precious commodity at this point in the game.

Re: Giga Wing 2 (New Thread)

It all has to do with timing. The boss will always stay out for 10(ish) seconds before disappearing for a couple seconds and starting its next wave. If you finish a phase before the total time has passed, then the boss will switch to the next phase and continue until the time is up. So for example, if you take 6 seconds to finish phase A, then the boss will shoot its phase B pattern for 4 more seconds before disappearing again.

So for that pattern in particular, what I do is when I get to the phase before that pattern I count to 7 before activating the reflect force. That should finish the current phase and trigger the pattern, but the boss will disappear in time so you don't actually have to dodge anything. By the time the second repetition comes around your reflect force should be charged.

I hope that helps. You're soooooo close to getting the clear now. Keep going for it!

Kinda lame score though, will have to come back to this after I clear some more games.

@the answer to my question earlier: I ended up just killing that pattern with my shot, so I could shield right away but I might experiment with that strategy when I come back to this game.

Congrats, good job! I think that score is actually not bad for a first clear considering Romi is probably the hardest character for scoring. Plus your scores increase really quickly once you start practicing even just the easy volcannons.

aw shucks, thanks
Yeah, I 'spect if I figured out the volcanons even just in stage 2 and 3 I'd probably get quite a bit higher. Stage 2 is even Kart's stage 2, IIRC, so I have a few videos I could look at to learn how to get those volcanons, not to mention that there's that Romi run on nicovideo.

Arcade Mode (Dreamcast):
59,809,587,965,540,580 - marus-MPO - Chery Stork (RF) - ALL - DC - Video

Fuuuuuck, I was so close to 60 quadrillion! I did another run right after this and got almost exactly the same score, so at least I'm consistent? Stage 4 was pretty sloppy - if I performed better in that stage then I would have maxed out the multiplier earlier which might have been just enough to push myself over 60 quadrillion. Other than that, I lost two lives on stage 6 so I was a little nervous on the last boss. I just used the rest of my bombs on the first phase to avoid dying to bad luck, and thankfully I didn't choke on the 2nd and 3rd phase.

There's clearly some things I can do to improve my volcannon and medal collecting routes, but at this point I think the next fastest way to bumb my score up is to figure out how to kill both pods on stage 5. I'm honestly not sure if I can do it with Stork. I'll spend some time experimenting but if I can't figure it out then I may just switch to Carmine Plus.

For sure! I was going to wait until I get my "final" run before uploading it to Youtube, but now that I think about it I may as well export this one because beating Battletoad was a big milestone I was shooting for. I know for sure that I can beat Rob's score too with a little more practice. The next milestone after that would be 70 quadrillion, but that may be a little out of reach for me. I'm still not sure how the WRs are getting over 80 quadrillion. I wish there were some better runs I could reference - not that all of the videos available now haven't been super helpful, but the highest runs I've seen get 72 quadrillion and I'm honestly not sure where the extra points are coming from.

Youtube is still processing the video, but here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F80C3221G_k

EDIT: I exported the wrong highlight lol. Fixed with the correct link.

My stage 1 score is pretty awful lol. I'll need to work on that one at some point. On to some good news though: I figured out a route to kill both of the high-value pods on stage 5 using Stork! And it "only" costs 4 bombs! The tricks which prevented me from getting this to work before are 1) You need to spend bombs early and destroy all of the towers ASAP so they won't block the bullets that you reflect back at the pods, and b) You want to primarily reflect patterns which damage the pods but which don't damage the main boss significantly. These both sound obvious in hindsight (and really they are), but it sure took me a while to figure out. Hopefully I can pull this off in a real run soon and get another PB.

Oh man, that's an incredible score! Congrats! :!:
I really enjoyed watching the replay. Stage 1 seemed like near perfect (and way better than I have ever been  ) ... Oh and the ending was pretty clutch as well.

Watching this almost makes me want to play Giga Wing 2 again, but it's still probably not gonna happen.

If you actually beat Rob's score, that would really blow my mind. I wish you the best of luck!

Ugh, I went from being a sneeze away from 60 quadrillion to now being a sneeze away from Rob's score. At least I know for sure I can do it now! I pulled off my strat for killing both of the stage 5 pods, but I missed some key volcannons on stages 3 and 4 which prevented me from maxing out the multiplier before stage 5. If I had come into stage 5 with a maxed multiplier then I would have gotten Rob's score for sure.

At this point I can probably just grind out a better run, but it might be a good idea for me to work on the stage 1 boss some more. I'm not consistently getting my multiplier as high as other videos I've seen even though I've gotten more consistent at all of the parts before the boss. I also feel like I should improve my stage 2 some more, but the last time I practiced it seemed like getting a higher multiplier would require significantly harder routes, so I don't think I want to make stage 2 any harder until I've gotten more consistent at stage 1.

Thanks! I know for sure I can do it now - I just have to execute everything in one run.

I finally pulled it off! I messed up on medal collecting during the stage 1 boss but otherwise I managed to get all the volcannons on my route and max out my multiplier on the stage 4 boss so I could score the full potential of stage 5 and onwards! I could probably grind out a slightly better run if I got a better stage 1, but at this point I think I'm ready to take a break from this game. I don't think I could make any significant gains unless I figure out how to improve my stage 2 enough so that I could max the multiplier on stage 3, and even then executing a run like that would probably take a while. I wish I could figure out how the WR runs are scoring in the 80 quadrillions as well.

At any rate, assuming I don't end up improving this run I want upload it to youtube in the near future with either some annotations or commentary similar to what I did with my Blue Revolver runs - hopefully it'll end up being useful to someone in the future!

I love those kind of detailled commentaries, so I can't wait for that.

Well done, Marus! I knew you could do it. Looking forward to watching the run, and any commentary that you do for it. I do wish that we could see how the WR holders did that, as well.

Sorry for taking so long. It's still on my to-do list, although I've been taking a break from shmups for a bit to focus on work and other hobbies. For the time being I'll go ahead and release the highlight on Youtube, just so the video doesn't get lost - check it here!

This is a pretty small score, one that I expect to pass soon with any sustained play. Nonetheless I want to remind people this topic exists!

Coming back to this game for a few random credits in forever I managed a personal best... Shows how much I was able to accomplish in my early scrub days. Back when playing a shmup meant credit feeding to see all the endings, again and again. Good times! But i'm older now. I've always really loved this game so I wanted to show it some love. I didn't realize, Marus, that a while back you beat Rob's score. You get a lot of respect from me (belatedly, sorry!), since I used to read his guide a lot to figure out some of the nuance of the game. I'll be rewatching your clear video a lot now

Any reason why you prefer Cherry to the other characters? I'd have thought her homing shot might make it tricky to time your kills. I usually play... Limi? The little girl (w/e her name is) but I was having trouble dealing with popcorn before using Kart for a bit and getting this small personal-best.

Nice! I'm glad to see there's still some interest in this game. Cherry's homing shot is hard to deal with sometimes but I really like her stage order. Cherry and Kart both have the sky stage as their stage 1, which makes it (relatively) easy to rack a high multiplier early on. Also you spend most of your time using the reflect force instead of your main shot anyways so it's not that big a handicap I feel. I considered switching to her unlockable ship Carmine Plus a few times since that would let me keep the same stage order but with a main shot that's more normal and does more damage, but I'd already gotten used to her default ship so I just stuck with that.
