Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

I think it's a real missed opportunity not to have Jeff Goldblum reprise his role from the original Death Wish. I bet he could still pull off his villainous motivational monologue, I KILL RICH CUNTS!
I'm emotionally torn on Death Wish's remake. On one hand, I know it will probably lack the impact or quality of the original because of the people involved (phoned-in Bruce Willis and Eli Roth the Hack Master). But on the other, my high-school classmate worked on the film as a crew member so I'm happy he finally broke into major studio productions...
Though it's interesting to note that many of the criticisms of the movie are focusing on a condemnation of the film's supposed politics and praise of gun-toting, 'right-wing' vigilantism (esp. in light of current events)... mirroring the wide-spread critical condemnation of the original Death Wish back in the 70s. Truly, nothing new under the sun!

This remake is only for the original. It's not related to the sequels.

Straight Time. 1978, Ulu Grosbard.
I may have posted about this hidden gem before. I watch it every couple of years, it's like an antidote to all modern cinema. Dustin Hoffman, Harry Dean Stanton, Theresa Russell and M Emmet Walsh. Based on the book by Eddie Bunker.
A real slice of 70's realism cinema. Couldn't be made now. I think it's one of Hoffman's best performances. It just gets on with telling it's story, no tricks or gimmicks, no director trying to show off, real natural film style. I love it.
We also watched Manhunter, 1986. Way better than Red Dragon, though not all of it worked for me. The lead actor didn't pull it off, though Tom Noonan was fantastic.

The Darkest hour.
Gary Oldman is one of the most amazing actors of our time that is for sure. The range of roles he gets chosen for defies belief and is testament to his abilities. I didn't like the movies story much though. It portrays us the UK as a begging, no hope, no win situation and shows none of our strengths. It goes on the basis that Churchills words got us through the war. Whilst his words were motivating for the most part he comes across as an arsehole. I suppose its history, some of it is portrayed left me thinking there was more to the heroism of Dunkirk than rallying civilians in one last desperate minute of one last desperate hour. I hope they follow this up with a sequel and show how things turned around. It surely was Britains Darkest hour, the politicians had about as much of a clue what to do with Hitler as Theresa May knows what to do with the EU. Fitting times.

You've pretty much summed up how I feel about the film and like you, I regularly re-watch it. Could well be Hoffman's most natural performance.
Its one of my go-to films, to cleanse the palate when I find I have watched too much inferior cinema .

Heaven Can Wait (1978) - I liked the original (Here Comes Mr. Jordan) a slight bit better, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. It stayed true to the original without many of the missteps usual of remakes. Warren Beatty was great as Joe Pendleton.

Right...and the "Avatar" 3D experience was categorically not the same as the "Avatar" IMAX 3D experience. They had a completely new, different type of 3D glasses lens that they were using with that particular release, and they didn't have it before, and haven't had it since. I mean, these glasses were re-collected *by force* by the theater when the movie was done. So far as I could see, unless you walked out of the movie halfway through to use the bathroom, went in and removed your glasses, and walked out with them in your pocket, you were *not* leaving that place with the glasses. At all. Not kidding: they were like freaking stormtroopers when you were trying to leave that theater. *Nobody* got to abscond with those things.Skykid wrote:I saw Avatar in the largest screen in the theater in 3D. At the time I remember thinking that some of the effects were nice, but didn't live up to the hype surrounding them. I thought generally it was embarrassingly awful in most other areas and made me wonder what happened to Cameron's brain.
The only recent movie I felt was elevated by a theatre experience and used special effects in an incredibly smart way was Gravity (and that's in spite of its often horrible dialogue).
It's not really like you'd want to, either. The glasses themselves weren't like the ones you see today, or have seen for many years. These things were *massive* on your face. Remember how hideously big those idiotic bug-like sunglasses were that Paris Hilton made all the rage a good decade ago, now? These were in that vein: grotesquely large, stupid-looking, and not ergonomically friendly to the face. Other than saying, "I got one!!!!", I don't know why anyone would really want one of those things.
And yet, the 3D in that theater was gloriously terrific. I mean, it boggled the mind. It actually got me excited for the first, what, half hour or so? Seeing the uses for the real "show off 3D moments" was absolutely phenomenal (the crew waking up in zero gravity from hypersleep, the spinning in the air unobtainium, etc.), and to that point, the movie still held a good deal of promise...promise which would later be betrayed by Cameron's absolutely awful script.
How long's it been since I saw that? 10 years, and I'm still gobsmacked by those special effects? I do wish I'd seen "Gravity" in the theater to have a special effects marvel to compare it to, but it was gone from the premium theaters too quickly.

I really like Thief. It does have a Tangerine Dream soundtrack which isn't to everyone's taste - it's one of James Caan's personal favourites, but he hates the music. It also has Tuesday Weld...GaijinPunch wrote:

Voices of a Distant Star
Short and to the point. The animation is poor but when you consider Shinkai did it all himself it's easy enough to give it a pass. This is still one of his best movies, imo. I need to watch Your Name a few more times but that one feels like his best.

I still need to watch stuff from this guy. He looks like a VERY gimmicky filmmaker though. Which doesn't mean his stuff can't be enjoyable. not in the least
Learned recently that he used to do BG art for Falcom. Not surprising! Guy's a beast when it comes to beautiful, expressive digital background painting.

I think it was either last summer, or two summers ago, someone posted about it, saying it looked great, and that James Caan was pretty good in it. It had a screen of him leaning against a wall or signboard, I think. Looked so good!

I watched Straight Time based on the posts in this thread and really enjoyed it.
His movies are basically all gut punching emotion. They are well worth a watch, better than the majority of anime being made now. Wolf Children is another really good recent anime movie that I would highly recommend. Too bad Oshii is making live action nonsense these days.FinalBaton wrote:I still need to watch stuff from this guy. He looks like a VERY gimmicky filmmaker though. Early Michael Mann is so great. I always like to dream that the giant cut of The Keep will surface, even though Mann disowned it and I'm sure the material is trashed. But yeah, Thief rules. Dunno how anyone could hate that soundtrack. One I listen to pretty frequently--and now, right now!

Thief (1981)
The music, by Tangerine Dream who I like, is mediocre and doesn't fit the movie at all. That's what I didn't like.
The rest is pretty good: Nice performances, amazing night scenery, especially in the beginning, and the story is nice and doesn't fuck up much. James Caan's character is very similar to De Niro's in Heat, but that one was directed as well by Michael Mann, if I'm not mistaken.

Re: Movies you've just watched
So, I actually had like 10 minutes to kill and I'm usually a sit down and watch it guy, but I was curious about the soundtrack. As such I watched the opening scene. I will say, the opening track does not really work for me. I'll not let that bother me, but I do dig Tangerine Dream up to a certain year (it might now be defined as 1980) but I do recall Miracle Mile which was 1988, having a more befitting soundtrack and by then they were definitely into their new age cheese ball phase.soprano1 wrote:Thief (1981)

Rewatched Get Out after Jordan Peele's win and found it much more fulfilling the second time. It seems to benefit when you actually know what's going on and see the character's behaving in accord to their ulterior machinations.
I remember feeling it was a little perfunctory on first viewing and I wasn't quite feeling the straight comedy element or the ending, but it worked after I've had some Key & Peele exposure. I think the black comedy side of the movie is really well handled.
Respect to the guy for winning the screenplay gong though, I'm sure they could have given it to something absolutely shitty instead.

If you haven't seen this you are missing out on life. Also, I know you have some masochistic wish and stay away from television despite the fact it's far superior to film at the moment, but all 3 seasons of Fargo are excellent. Their small part is far from the best thing, but it is a nice little cherry on top.Skykid wrote:but it worked after I've had some Key & Peele exposure.

Seen it.
I've been watching TV where pos recently. I actually took a look at Ep1 of Fargo and it looked incredible, and I promised myself I'd go back to it after Black Mirror, of which I'm on season 4 now.
I also watched 4 episodes of The Punisher but it's really bad so I dropped it.

Good to hear. Fargo is definitely did not shit on the original. I'm hoping the upcoming Heathers can do the same thing, as it's the exact same formula as the Fargo series (which nailed the landing all 3 times) but my guess is it won't. I will give it a fair shot though.Skykid wrote:Seen it.

Thief (1981)
Figured now was the time to get this out of the way. While no masterpiece, it is definitely a nice slice of cinema from a time past. Caan's south side Chicago accent probably wasn't too hard to convert from growing up in NYC. He's so Chicago in this it hurts sometimes, but nonetheless, enjoyable. The coffee shop scene was excellent. There's some awkward pacing, but forgivable. You can definitely see Mann's trademark night shots, which are still unbeatable, IMHO.
As for the score, it starts off pretty meh, and has a few pieces that are definitely better, and then a couple of that are definitely worse. It's all over the place. Definitely an area Mann improved on in every subsequent release. For shame, as I quite like Tangerine Dream. I have several records, one being the Sorcerer soundtrack. Many later films are far more memorable (Risky Business, Miracle Mile) so not sure what the fuck happened here. Reading the Wikipedia page, the soundtrack was nominated for a Razzie.

As for the accent in Thief... I've definitely heard far more noticeable (in real life) here, but it made me check the summary of the film to see where it took place, once I heard him talk. That and seeing a very quick glimpse of the now drastically different skyline in the background. James Belushi and the other undesirables in the film are "quite Chicago" as well. Overall, not bad... just... noticeable, and the last thing I saw with James Caan in it was, Elf, so...wish I could "get" the accent thing you mentioned,
One other cool note that you likely missed is the jazz club in the film, The Greenmill, is quite famous, even having it's own Wikipedia page.
So...
Spoiler
...blowing it up was probably a pretty big deal.
