New member seeking advice on the gamecube pluto mod

Post by Snagger »

Hi guys, iv just joined tonight after a few weeks lurking and would like to ask some advice on the plutohd mod if it's not to much trouble.
This was my first attempt at a mod as I've got no experience in electronics or soldering so sorry if I come across a bit dumb.
I soldered the pluto chip into my gamecube yesterday following the steps on knjn website. After testing it I had a picture and could access the osd using my controller.
The picture didn't look much better than analogue so I instantly thought something wasn't right. Anyway i activated enhanced dvi to get some sound but all I got was white noise.
I tried loading mario kart up and got up to the point where I was choosing which cup to race in, then as the screen changed scenes the picture went black and never came back on. This happens at the same point every time.

With metroid or twilight Princess I get the Nintendo sign then the same deep black screen appears.
I had the red leds flashing on the board and the gamecube sounded like it was still playing the games.
In the end I desoldered everything ready to start again and put it down to bad or crossed connections.

Sorry for such a long first post but I was so chuffed I'd even got a picture.
I've searched the site for answers but couldn't find this been asked before.
With this been my first mod I just don't want it to beat me so any advice on what my issues could have been so I don't make the same mistakes would be would be really appreciated.
I'm UK based so if anyone replies I'm not been ignorant but I won't be able to reply until after work tomorrow.
Thanks everyone..

Just a couple of videos with the problem I'm having if anyone is interested. Any advice on if the leds blink right or the sound problem would be greatly appreciated.

Sound problem is a wiring issue. Shorten/Move/Resolder - Left Right Clock, Bit Clock, Audio Data lines and that should fix the problem. Does double dash load fine using a normal RCA composite video cable? I think this is a gamecube issue, not a GC-Video problem.

I have a Gamecube that refuses to boot, Rogue Squadron. Won't get past the title screen. Also locks up on some other games as well.

The sound is exactly the same using the standard composite cables in the analogue input. It won't load zelda or metroid 1 and 2. There the four games iv tested. Iv already desolderd once and resoldered and its exactly the same issue. The pot is coming out at 205 ohms and iv tried another three disc drives from other cubes with the same result.

Sounds like your cube might be defunct. What is the history with it?

Interesting, I have never seen such a problem before and I have no idea what could cause it. Maybe try a different TV/monitor?
I had the red leds flashing on the board
The blinking pattern appears to be ok, but it's not really meant to be a full system check.

I'm at work for the next couple of days on long shifts so won't get chance to do anything but I'll take my cube to my brother in laws at the weekend and test it in his monitor and TV.
I've also got a friend who repairs audio and video equipment so he's going to have a check of my soldering to double check.
Worst case I do have other cubes I can take the main board from and resolder to a new board.
Thanks for the replies guys. It's appreciated.

After a 14 hour shift I couldn't help but test the cube on the monitor and it's the same.
Here's a video of attempting to load twilight Princess up. It recognises the game disk. The laser beeps then it hangs. I'm not sure whether or not to just take another board from another cube.

Like I said before, this is not the GC-Video. I have a cube that has these exact same signs. It will always lock up at certain entry points in games. Not sure if its memory, or gpu/cpu related. ****This cube does not have gc-video installed.

Yeah iv already stripped the digital port off another board now. That'll do for tonight though as my eyes can't focus anymore lol.
I'll post the outcome when I get it soldered back up..
