Post by ST Dragon »

I don't know about you guys but I'm stunned by the beautiful colours used in these screen shots of Airrade Summer!
I wonder how well they're animated and they play & sound and

How good are all these shooters by the way?
Or are they just cheap clone Wannabes Cotton, Parodius & Shikigami No Shiro?

I'm personally not a big fan of the Airrade series....the graphics or the gameplay. All the other games on your list, however....

Oh, and the Touhou games aren't really like anything else.

don't really like the airrade's either, but the touhou games (first three in particular, on windows anyway) are games you must try. they are simply excellent (and way deeper than the shikis).

When you say the "touhou games", do you mean:

Imperishable Night
Perfect Cherry Blossom
Embodiment of Scarlet Devil

well, i'm not completely sure, but "toho" refers to basically all of zun's games (the shrinemaiden series).

in my mind though, the only ones worth playing have been EoSD, PCB, and IN (though i haven't bought Shoot the Bullet yet :)). Phantasm of Flower View just didn't feel right. that Twinkle Star Sprite style of game doesn't suit Zun's bullet pattern work, and frankly, it waters it down.
the genius is in all the scripting, and getting that bullet hell just right.

and the fighting game he came out with "immaterial of missing power" or some such, i'm just not a big fighter fan. i'd imagine i'd have a good time if i got good with one, but all the time up to that would just feel really bleh.

Yeah...stay away from Phantasmagoria of Flower View, as well as Shoot the Bullet. I never did really like TSS anyway though, so that style of game puts me off. As for Shoot the Bullet...well...I find it pretty damn boring. No, you don't fire. Yes, all you do is take pictures of bullet patterns and bosses by getting close to them and hitting a button. Some of the patterns are down right amazing, but you can't help but feel sad that they're not in an actual shooter. Also, there's no real continuity between levels. Each boss/level is a seperate entity.

Put me down as another ZUN fan...Perfect Cherry Blossom and Imperishable Night are both Top 25 stuff for me. His other stuff that I've played is good too, but those two, in my opinion at least, really stand out: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is a ways more basic in most aspects (if the rather complex scoring systems in the other two games put you off, you might like it though), and Phantasmagoria just felt too derivative of TSS to me, his other games have a much more unique feel to them, despite borrowing some stuff from elsewhere.

I played AirRade Air awhile back, and while I wasn't all that thrilled with it, others here swear by it, so as with most anything it depends on your tastes: head over to Shoot the Core, there should be a demo link to it there if you want to try it (along with heaven knows how many other doujin shmups).

AirRade Air is my fave dojin shooter and yes I do own a lot of Zun's games to but I'm more of a horozontal guy personaly and AirRaide Air just oozes charm and has great gameplay in my opinion espeicaly with the punch and score multiplyer mechinics it's got going for it.

Of course though the ToHo games are also awesome and are worth checking out. Personaly I like shoot the bullet since it's a new spin on a crowded gender, great stuff!
