So yeah, anyone who plays MAME might know that some versions of it are Online capable with the Kaillera Netplay option...which includes Shmups.

So...um...anyone here up for a 2P session, if anything just for a quick run for fun?

Stuff I know works on Netplay:

Cyvern
Dangun Feveron
Dodonpachi
Strikers 19xx series (just about all of the ones that work on Mame)
Guwange
Vasara 1, 2
Mazinger Z
Gradius Series (up through 4, including the Salamander games)
ESP Ra.De.

Zedblade (usually on Kawaks)
Pulstar/Blazing Star

Most of it is potentially laggy, but that's due to high ping times and fighting game inputs, shmups are mostly immune to that.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I'd think shmups games are even more sensative to lag than fighters. Also most shmups aren't really fun with 2P, unless you talking Change Air Blade (what we played at the last San Jose shmupmeet). :)

Got an even better idea, can multiple people watch a Kaillera session realtime? Then we could run mini-lessons/seminars on specific shmup techniques!

Well, the only way I could see that happening is if one shmupper plays while the other observes without inserting coins...at least, that's all I've known to be able to happen.

Also, I've not had the lag problems with shmups online that you speak of, Dave. Like I said, Ping has a lot to do with it and the server you connect to.

Geez, why didn't anybody TELL me Change Air Blade ruled so much? I definitely want to play it on Kaillera now!
