Neo Geo Pocket Color on the TV
As with the Sega Game Gear I was wondering if anyone has tried to consolize the Neo Geo Pocket?
Re: Neo Geo Pocket Color on the TV
It's not going to be of much help, but it's worth noting an official SNK 'consolized' NGPC (sort of) existed, even it seems to be obscenely rare, with only a few (literally, around 3) of them ever came out on Yahoo auctions.
Pretty awesome piece of kit, though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qG64QlZuzdg

The digital RGB signals are easily accessible from the NGPC PCB http://i.imgur.com/04dQq.jpg. I have a Neo Geo Pocket Color on the way and I'm gonna try to convert it to HDMI using the same board I used for this video https://youtu.be/pvdC2y_xwLk. I'll post here if I make any progress.

That could be interesting, though I'd prefer analog RGB tooWoozle wrote:The digital RGB signals are easily accessible from the NGPC PCB http://i.imgur.com/04dQq.jpg. Re: Neo Geo Pocket Color on the TV
My fpga board can be modified to support RGB/YPbPr at 240p/480p by swapping the hdmi connector with a vga connector and adding a ADV7125 DAC. I actually have a board on my desk to do just that for the GBA but I never assembled it because I want to make some changes.
Bigger issue is making it still useable as a handheld after the board and controller port are installed :p

Re: Neo Geo Pocket Color on the TV
Just keep an unmodified one as a handheld, then get a 2nd one to consolize. That's my plan .

Any news on the project?^^

I asked beharius this exact thing in his Consolized Sega Game Gear thread, if he ever gave thought towards a consolized NGPC, and he gave me a very short answer of "no".robotvendingmachine wrote:As with the Sega Game Gear I was wondering if anyone has tried to consolize the Neo Geo Pocket?
It's a shame, the quality of games on the NGPC are light-years better than the Game Gear. But I guess he is a fan of the GG and it's an easier system to turn into console.
Re: Neo Geo Pocket Color on the TV
Still waiting on the NGPC to arrive from Japan, it made it to the US so it should be delivered to me in not too long.gbaplayer wrote:Any news on the project?^^
it should take very little time to make a "proof of concept" of a NGPC tv adapter...turning it into something useful that others can use will take a long time. Have to start somewhere!
Re: Neo Geo Pocket Color on the TV
Worry not, I am 100% sure that, once Woozle is done with his hdmi mod, somebody will do at least 1-2 batches of a consolized NGPC. Trust me, I can foresee the future...opt2not wrote:I asked beharius this exact thing in his Consolized Sega Game Gear thread, if he ever gave thought towards a consolized NGPC, and he gave me a very short answer of "no".robotvendingmachine wrote:As with the Sega Game Gear I was wondering if anyone has tried to consolize the Neo Geo Pocket?

Re: Neo Geo Pocket Color on the TV
I picked up the NGPC from the post office a few hours ago. I was able to get decent results using the same FPGA board I'm using for my GBA and Game Gear TV out projects.
Currently working on a QSB which uses a 40-pin flex cable to connect to the main FPGA PCB, inspired by all of citrus3000psi's awesome QSBs. I'm using a 0.05" via for each pad, not sure if solder will flow down that but I guess I'll find out. Just using the 4 red bits for now, hence the gray scale video. I could solder up the rest of the color bits, but I don't want to risk lifting any pads before I can attempt installing a QSB.

Omg yes! Is this really happening?? Someone pinch me.
Great job on the progress, it’s looking awesome so far.

Re: Neo Geo Pocket Color on the TV
Glad you like it
Does anyone know what type of controller connector the Neo Geo AES uses? If it's a part I can buy on digikey I'd like to put a controller port on the PCB.

Re: Neo Geo Pocket Color on the TV
HAS uses them so they are available.
Re: Neo Geo Pocket Color on the TV
Isn't it just your regular DB-15 connector?
Great work, Woozle!

Re: Neo Geo Pocket Color on the TV
There's 12 pads on the NGPC to solder for the pixel data, 4-bits for red/blue/green each. I only soldered wires to the 4-bits for red at first.
I went back and soldered everything but the green bits 3 and 0, ran out on fpga pins on the IO breakout board I was using.
I'm going to work on getting the pinout for the 36-pin lcd flex cable, that way I just plug directly into the NGPC with no soldering.
Here's it working with more color. There are some glitchy pixels, but that's from the wiring.

If you plan selling these, please count me in.

Re: Neo Geo Pocket Color on the TV
Lets not start the domino effect of purchase interest posts just yet. Clearly there's interest in this board, and a spot in the market for a mod like this. But lets let Woozle get further along before every bump to this thread becomes packed with "me too's".

Why don't let OP decide if he wants people asking for purchases.opt2not wrote:Lets not start the domino effect of purchase interest posts just yet. I would definitely buy one .
That's 5 of us so far.

I love the enthusiasm for the project, but I do think we should keep expectations in check. This was just a quick little test/demo I got going over the weekend, it's far away from a polished/finished product.
My main focus is my GBA hdmi kit, once I get that finished I plan to tackle things like Game Gear, 3DS, and NGPC hdmi kits. Until then you'll just have to be patient

Re: Neo Geo Pocket Color on the TV
Thanks for letting us know, Woozle. I figured as much, which is why I mentioned to my fellow enthusiasts that we should temper our excitement for now. Personally I'm willing to wait, I've gone so long without this being even remotely on the radar of possibilities, I can wait a bit more. Besides, I'm also looking forward to seeing your GBA hdmi kit.Woozle wrote:I love the enthusiasm for the project, but I do think we should keep expectations in check. Big fan of the NGPC and its great library of games. This truly is a very cool development and a project I would support with a purchase.
