How can an entire game be considered a meme

Could be because of its severely over-hyped/"sacred cow" status among more casual/non-shmup players. Comparing literally every shmup (and sometimes non-shmup games) to Ikaruga is/was a classic Gaming Journalist move (as was Sine Mora for about a week and a half). You could say that Ikaruga is the Dark Souls of shmups, even.

I guess Radiant Silvergun could probably be considered something of a meme as well, given how infamously-gouged the prices for the Saturn port is. Speaking of which, was it Sonic Wings 3 for AES that had that shitstorm about it? But I guess that's more of a collector meme than a shmup meme.

RSG is more like Dracula X (PCE) - it was never actually that pricey or rare, even now, so much as it's always been lauded as an import killer app.

These days both are downright reasonable compared to the fuckery going on with other titles/platforms. RIP Super Famicom halcyon days. 3; AES is a fucking horror show of comedy prices and, even worse, entrenched counterfeiting. I wonder when the latter will really bite down on the relatively "mainstream" consoles... MD and its snapcases in particular.

Slightly different situation - Aero Fighters 3 AES was an outright fabrication made up by some counterfeiting cunt named DavidG, and sold for a cut to the English-speaking AES community by brazen thief/TOTALLY INNOCENT PATSY TonK (pick a story - total shitshow either way).

Five or so copies iirc, sold for thousands apiece. Much hilarity ensued at the Neo Geo.com forums when DavidG's swiss cheese-esque story came out. "MY UNCLE WORKED FOR SNK DOODS, I FOUND DEEZE RARE CANCELLED GAMES IN HIS GARDEN SHED" about covers it.

Not to be confused with the official, uncontroversial Japanese AES release of Sonic Wings 3.
