I need help identifying a shmups i played around 2009

Post by PaulyD »

hello :) Around 2009 a friend of mine gave me a cd with this shoot'em up, 2d vertical scroller space shooter game that I played the crap out of. I haven't played it in like 8 years and wanted to pick it up again because of nostalgia but of course i switched pcs multiple times and can't find the cd nor remember the name of the game. Here is what i remember: You have a spaceship that you can upgrade. You can upgrade the laser and the rockets. (and maybe armor? cant remeber) there are 5 (or 6?) lasers starting with a basic blue one, then a yellow one, a red one, a purple one that traces the enemies, and a green one that 'sprays' the laser like a spray can. The lasers can be upgraded in power. the missiles can be purchased and upgraded but unlike the laser, you don't have an infinite supply but have to buy every single one you want to use. The actual gameplay is fairly simple: Your ship is at the bottom of the screen and shoots up with the enemys spawning in big numbers at the top. Unfortunately i don't remember many details that aren't generic to the genre. The graphics seemed super good at the time (I'd say the game was released past 2000) and the game flow took you from the screen with your ship and the upgrades to the actual level and so forth. It had a little rpg feel to it as you upgraded your ship after each level and purchases were permanent. The background was black with stars (and maybe planets?). I do realise that most of these things are pretty typical for the genre but I hope that maybe one of you can recognize the game and tell me the name. Big thanks in advance :)

Okay I found it after going through a lot of forums, wikis and youtube videos. Astro Avenger 2 is the name of this gem. Can't wait to play this game again after that long period of time. :D
