Holy fuck, Topps trading cards had some hardcore ultraviolence going on back in the 60s. :o I knew all about Mars Attacks, but The Civil War News and Battle: The Story of World War II are something else. Much earthier than the deranged antics of Mars or its 80s spiritual successor Dinosaurs. Grim!

Their inspiration from the 1930s, Gum's The Horrors of War, was no slouch either. They're more pleasing to look at imo, at least for the novelty of brutal carnage via clean, bright Herge-esque style.

It's a local inside joke - motherfuckers keep slipping/tripping/falling off that sculpture, apparently, hence its fearsome reputation and that gory photoshop.

Thanks for the input. I thought it looks like a giant leech sucked to the ground... :o
Those Topps cards are cool, but i certainly ask to myself why they put out those gruesome cards...were they for children to play with?

I find that as interesting as the cards themselves, tbh. From my very brief readings, they apparently were pretty controversial at the time - Mars Attacks was quickly withdrawn from sale, hence that series' high collector value. The illustrators came from the decidedly risque world of pulp novels, it seems. Fascinating seam of pop cultural history.

I think it's also kinda funny how in the 80s/90s, you'd get kids' toys and cartoons based on R-rated movies like Terminator, Robocop, Aliens, Rambo etc - but always thoroughly sanitised of violence, sexuality, etc. Meanwhile there's Topps stuff from the 60s absolutely steeped in mayhem.

BTW, here's a site with scans of the whole Civil War set, plus transcribed card texts. Highly recommend a quick runthrough, it's bloodeningly intense stuff.

Actually no, I've been revisiting the artworks of Charles Keeping. His Beowulf illustrations (above) really gave me the creeps as a small child - imagined the leering faces of Grendel and his mother looming out of the darkness of my room for many a bedtime after. From an adult perspective, the former has an oafish, rabbit/headlights stare I find near-sympathetic. From my brief skims, apparently Keeping took a serious head injury in WWII and endured significant psychological travails afterward, which were said to inform his later treatment of "monsters."

Anyway, I love his use of gloaming tones and discomfortingly spidery lines - reminds me of a much more conservative companion to those "Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark" favourites - yet he wasn't one-note either, weaving images of stirring conviction and devotion from those same bleak threads. And sometimes just letting rip with sneering or seductive or surreal visions. His Dracula looks like pure evil indulgence, I'd like to track down a copy. Or at least a scan. The God Beneath The Sea has some formidably barmy stuff too.

The recurring motif of a glaring white moon / smouldering black sun above the moors in Beowulf really stands out now, very cool. Appropriately KVLT as fuck.

Possibly NSFW, manly glutes of legend:
