Exemplary man. I very vaguely recall hearing of his story before, but clearly his passing wasn't given the proper due. ;-;7Specineff wrote:Stanislav Petrov, soviet officer who prevented a retaliatory nuclear strike by the USSR after correctly calling a false alarm on a detected missile launch coming from the USA (right in the middle of the Cold War), and thus avoiding a possible WWIII, has been reported today to have died in May 19 of this year.

95.
No mean feat for a fighter whose style was to eat punches with his face. Doubly so when you take into account that a great many of those punches were thrown by Robinson.
A nightmare. In and out the ring.

Sort of off and on topic: Raging Bull is a good movie with two significant flaws for me. One is the unrealistic depiction of the boxing matches. I appreciate that in film terms you need to create action, but I don't think I've ever seen a filmed dramatisation where boxing as a sport was even close to being depicted realistically. In Raging Bull there is no boxing, just trading of straight blows to the head on repeat, and regardless of Lamotta's 'street brawler' style, nobody soaks that many blows to the face in a boxing ring without losing their face and subsequently dying.
The second issue is the improvisation. Scorcese usually handles improv well, although a lot of the time what seems like improv in his movies is actually scripted. In Raging Bull it's a little loose and rambles here and there at times, taking you out of the movie.
And that's it. Otherwise it's a good film, but I tend to find people rate it slightly too highly. I'm not sure I'd rate it best movie of the 80s, for example.

Liliane Bettencourt, the world's richest woman, died at 94. She was the heiress of the L'Oreal company. Don't know if that brand means much for Americans.

It's pretty well known in the U.S. too. I saw many commercials for their stuff, back when commercials weren't so easily avoided.

Yes xxx1993, Roy Dotrice has indeed died at ninety-four years of age. Were you familiar with his work? I myself only really knew him from a brief but pivotal Game of Thrones turn, as a pyromancer to the Lannisters. Loved his almost fearful reverence when it was shown at Blackwater's titular battle, in spectacularly gruesome fashion, that he really did know his shit!
I also enjoyed his testy exchanges with Peter Dinklage's Tyrion.
"We're about to sail into a shit typhoon Randy, so we'd better haul in the jib before it gets covered in shit."

EDIT: Wait a fucking minute! Now I remember, he narrated the official Song of Ice and Fire audiobooks! Man... his readings were generally excellent, though he couldn't help giving a bawdy hilarity to George RR Martin's raunchier material. Not the worst thing, tbh!GOT s2e09 wrote:Tyrion Lannister: I remember reading an old sailor's proverb... "Piss on wildfire and your cock burns off."

Fucking hell, yeah. No age at all. Only casually knew his work via Buzzcocks, but I always liked him. I had no idea he was hitting the substances quite that hard, at least not until I saw some more recent photos.

Fats Domino died today at 89 of natural causes. Can't say I knew his work all that well... I didn't even know "Ain't That A Shame" was his, despite loving John Lennon's cover of it.

And perhaps most relevant for folks what game, he did fantastic work as the voice of Dr. Vance (Alyx's father) in the Half Life 2 series of games (HL2 and ep1 and 2). I had always wondered if they ever made ep3, or HL3, if they would have Vance survive the cliff-hanger/shocker at the end of ep2. I guess this settles things ;_;Specineff wrote:Robert Guillaume, stage and TV actor (Soap, Benson, Guys and Dolls, Phantom of the Opera), and the voice of Rafiki in the Lion King passed away at the age of 89.
The voice-actors of that game really elevated the material. They all did such a great job.
