No superweapons, just clever ruses involving nonexistent cloaking tech and interconnected chess-like plotting. Disney is actively incorporating elements of Zahn's work into their new canon (including Thrawn himself), so they're clearly aware of the staying power it has.

The Thrawn novels had some pretty dumb stuff in them as well though, like those salamanders or whatever that nullify the force (just as bad as midiclorians IMO) and other dumb crap like Luke fighting his evil clone and the insane force wizard.

Ysalamiri and Joruus C'baoth.

It's true, the Thrawn books are overrated. But they were among the first works to continue the story told in the Original Trilogy, and they do a better job of evoking the feel of the films than any other Expanded Universe work from that time period. While they aren't my favorite Star Wars books, I don't feel their reputation is undeserved.

Statement from Lucasfilm
“Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on ‘Star Wars: Episode IX. Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process, but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.”

Thank Christ. Jurassic World was a pile of shit. I don't know who would be a good fit. Sam Mendes? Just get someone who's good on script and actors. Fuck spectacle.

Ahahaha!

I was literally placing bets with my bro last month on how long it would take Disney to fire Trevorrow; and it came sooner than expected.

Disney fire everyone anyway, there is no SW film released under their banner bar Abrams where the director hasn't been replaced -sometimes near the movie's completion - so it's not surprising Trevorrow went after the internet backlash over The Book of Henry.

And have you seen the Book of Henry? It's the most bizarrely misguided, unintentionally comic, and completely weirdly awful movie of the last few years. A very strange result. After that I was happy to see fans actually trying to get a director fired, we need more of that affirmative action in Hollywood.

So again with the disposable directors. Its kinda like Kathleen Kennedy needs to kick the shit out of a proxy George Lucas as some form of therapy.
As I've said re. Rogue one; the directors in the Disney owned franchise might as well be actors themselves, for all power they have.

On topic, re. Star Wars: The Last Jedi; stopped paying even the least bit of attention after seeing this image

21st century Ewok, only not as good.

I always look forward to a new Star Wars film, as long as they're not prequel level incompetence I'll have a good night, but The Last Jedi is looking a bit iffy. Did anyone see the toys they've done? I hope it's not a remake of Empire in the same way TFA was a remake of Star Wars.

They're going to pick someone like Mendes, solid, conventional. Maybe even Spielberg will get a shot. He should've directed Jedi. Bigalow?

I would be happy with Bigelow, she can direct. Spielberg would be most ideal despite his recent deflated record.

I think Last Jedi has the most potential of them all so far, if only because Johnson resembles a director with passion, even if some of his work has been imperfect. I also hear good reports from the set about him, and he's the only one bar Abrams who didn't get replaced.

Definitely not a prequel fan, but I'd rather rewatch any of those than see Rogue One again D:

If TFA's story is enough to qualify as a "remake", then I definitely wouldn't mind a similar "remake" of Empire. Definitely wouldn't mind that at all!

Really? You want to see yet another fight against walkers and a city in the clouds? It's ok to have the occasional callback but I still can't get behind TFA for making yet another Death Star. The film was good enough it didn't have to do that.

I want to see new stuff that matches the creativity of the original films, not fanboy recreations.

EDIT: Who am I kidding. There's obviously a training thing going on with Rey in this, some ships and vehicles can already be seen in the trailer. It's the middle film of a trilogy. It's going to be Empire...

The new super mega power death star was definitely TFA's biggest flaw by a long shot. But not because "it's just a remake of ANH", but because it was completely irrelevant to the plot while at the same time raising the bar of any future potential dangerous superweapons in the series to way beyond ridiculous.

People keep saying TFA "is a remake of ANH" as if it's completely the same movie, and is redundant for it, and that's really doing it a huge disservice that it simply doesn't deserve. It's a surprisingly solid movie, and even if the next movie desperately tries to repeat what made Empire great, that's far from the worst thing that could happen.

Bah, TFA is pretty bad. I think Rogue One is the worse of the two, because it's just fucking crap, but there ain't too much in it.

I don't know about this part. Currently, our concept of a sci-fi superweapon here is "giant laser which heats a massive object up so much, so quickly, that it explodes". There's so much more you can do with "superweapon", especially what with how much more we know (and don't know) about science now than we did in the 70's.

It doesn't even have to be science based.... How about a superweapon that uses the Force itself? There's still room for them to do something incredible.

Lynch said he started getting a headache the moment Lucas showed him the Ewoks or Wookies or w/e (back when Lucas was offering Lynch to direct episode VI)... so I can't imagine how sick he'd be when he saw Disney's corporate-cash-in junk.

bonk Laura Dern.
Not sure how I feel about JJ doing another one. I'd rather him direct one of the spinoff movies. Let's hope he has a better script, or at least one that doesn't copy the OT. No more "I'm your father" type crap.

I think the Imperial fleet was a pretty effective superweapon in Empire Strikes Back.

There's always "Dune."

That movie had as much in common with Star Wars as the original book.

Spectacle is all Star Wars ever had. A novelty when it was new - old and tiresome now that every movie is packed with it.

People who can get tired of things eventually stop watching movies so much, so they're at least catering to their customer base. Scary clown go 'boo' + loud noise = riches.

I don't agree. Star Wars and Empire had so much more. The new films will have all the new shiny surface shit to please a lot of people. I'd rather have a director who is more focused on characters. JJ is half and half I suppose.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Trailer (Official) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0CbN8sfihY

Cant say I'm surprised that this looks awful but I am a little taken aback by how creatively bankrupt it seems.
Its getting redundant saying it but these films really are at the level of fan fiction.

Skywalker was never a favourite but here I just want to push the fucker off the heigths of Skellig Michael myself.
Many design choices shown in the trailer (Kylo ren's fighter, Snoke's overall look, the new ewok sitting next to chewbacca, the white pokemon looking canine) are very amateur.
And those names; God almighty! Snoke? Kylo ren? Not exactly Vader or Maul, is it? Star Wars set in (safe) space?

Whats up with chewbacca's eyes and mouth? The CGI in these films is fucking dreadful.

Only thing I liked? The use of red on the usual yellow Star Wars logo.

also; Bah, humbug!

I agree. I was looking forward to the trailer but watching it reminded me of how I'm not at all invested in these characters. Plus, isn't something off with the lighting in a lot of those shots? Rey when she on Skelig looks like she's indoors.

Gorilla walkers... Really? False cliff hangers in the trailer (we know that half of the shots won't end up in the film) and grumpy man Luke.

Also, the cgi space stuff look average. Why can't the space battle in RoTJ be bettered? Is it because using models and actual cameras some thought was put in to how individual shots would add to the whole? The cgi stuff just seems slap dash. Not a patch on Game of Thrones.

This trailer did nothing for me, didn't bother getting tickets.

The new trailer makes the film look blindingly awful. If the director didn't have an ok resume I'd probably write it off without seeing it. I have a feeling that glimmer of fading hope will be washed away when I realize that once again the producer system is crafting the movie, rather than whatever guy was calling 'action' on set.
