As posted by MDY in the other thread:
In the style of XII Stag, Gunbird and 1943 collections now selling for about £10 in supermarkets up and down the UK, come some more budget Japanese titles including some pretty decent shmups...

Homaru - Taito
http://505gamestreet.com/tab_scheda.htm?id=97
Spring 2006

Sol Divide -
http://505gamestreet.com/tab_scheda.htm?id=68
May 2006

Dragon Blaze -
http://505gamestreet.com/tab_scheda.htm?id=86
May 2006

Raiden III

Feb 2006

Gigawing Generations
http://505gamestreet.com/tab_scheda.htm?id=56
Dec 2005

Samurai Aces
AKA: Sengoku Ace

Tengai
AKA: Sengoku Blade (Sengoku Ace2)
http://505gamestreet.com/tab_scheda.htm?id=85

It looks like they've bought the rights to sell these formerly packed together titles seperately in the case of the sengoku games etc.. - but you're talking £60 to import those - should be able to pick these up for £10-£15...

Better than nothing anyway!
It says XII Stag is available, bt I can't find it on any websites. Can you buy it from the company direct? I'm no so bothered about XII Stag, but I'd really like to get Raiden 3 & Gigawing.

Cheers

it sucks balls.

anyone have any news on on the sengoku pack reportedly being released?
Well, a PAL tv will display 1/6 less pictures per second than a NTSC one. Therefore, you there are 2 options:
- display all the frames, but the game is slower (this sucks balls)
- drop one frame out of 6 lire Ikaruga GC PAL (this sucks even more balls)

In short, avoid 50 Hz-only games at all cost :-(

It's available on Amazon, for example. Or your local gaming store - mine has a few copies.

Ah, thanks Ghegs. I couldn't find it in any of my local shops. :(

I'll probably pick this up from a retailer as it's cheap and I want to see Raiden 3 get released! :P

Actually Tescos have pretty much everything PS2 shmup wise...

XII Stag - £9.50
http://www.tesco.com/entertainment/prod ... ci=4|Games

Also have Gunbird: SE, Castle of Shikigami2 & Psyvariar Complete for the same price:
http://www.tesco.com/entertainment/prod ... 20'Em%20Up
http://www.tesco.com/entertainment/prod ... 20'Em%20Up
http://www.tesco.com/entertainment/prod ... 20'Em%20Up

Steel Dragon X for £14.24
http://www.tesco.com/entertainment/prod ... 20'Em%20Up

PSOne Strikers 1945II is £7.60
http://www.tesco.com/entertainment/prod ... 20'Em%20Up

PSOne Mobile Light Force is there too (but IIRC it's only Gunbird and it's the same price as the PS2 double pack)..

Mobile Light Force 2 £14.24 (This is Shikigami 1 - yes?)
http://www.tesco.com/entertainment/prod ... 20'Em%20Up

They have R-Type, Silpheed etc.. too but you'll be able to get them cheaper elsewhere..

Castle shikigami 2 is 50hz only has save functions and huge borders.

i need to get my hands on the game accelerator, so many cheap pal shmups in poor packaging and 50hz need to be able to appreciate them in all their glory.

Castle Shikigami 2 - 50/60 (no), Save (yes), Tate (yes)

No afaik, it wasn't. You see, this thread deals with PAL (european) shmups/collections mostly.

As the americans of course don't have to bother with the 50hz problem...

Do any of the games that have 60 hz mode run as 60 hz NTSC if you play them in a (modded) American NTSC console? (It does sometimes happen--Shenmue II on the Dreamcast is known for doing that, for instance.)

Yes, when you play a game in 60hz mode on a PS2 the output is actually NTSC unlike the Xbox and Gamecube where it's PAL60.

The problem, of course, comes from actually setting the 60hz mode. The game boots up in 50hz mode and most games ask right at start whether you'd like to use 60hz. So it would be easy to just press down and X even while you can't see anything on the screen. But in some PAL games (like Psyvariar) you have to set it from the options menu. Doesn't make it impossible, you just have to get someone to tell you the exact button presses to get to the menu and the right option. ;)

In any case, the setting is never saved to the memory card so you have to do the routine every time you boot up the game.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Ghegs,

I can force a PAL 50 Hz to run in 60 Hz with my Swap Magic (though I don't see the lower border of the picture), maybe it is enough to boot a PAL game on a NTSC TV and set it to real NTSC mode?

Ehr. I wouldn't really know as I've never dealt with that stuff. I guess it would work, as long as the sudden change to real NTSC from PAL-forced-into-NTSC doesn't mess things up.

Cool, how is the translation on these games? Is it like Mobile Light Force 2 or is it just a straight translation?

(I just got Sengoku Ace/Blade from Play Asia, if the European ones are reasonably translated I may have to replace it...)

Samurai Aces and Tengai have all the cutscenes and such things intact, it's pretty much a straight translation (albeit a different one to the international arcade version). Except the whole pack splitting thing, of course.

Is there by any small chance we could get this thread sticked? I mean it is kinda important for us PAL game buyers or importers... :)

Is Gigawing Generations full screen? I've only ever played the original Gigawing in mame and that was fullscreen.

If it is then I'm gonna try and pick that one up. If it's not then the lack of tate just isn't good enough.
