Overly Dramatic and wierd philosophical shooter list
For some reason shmups tend to be obsessed with doing this kind of crazyness. Here is what I can recall off the top of my head (with reasons why):
-Metal Black (because of the messed up end battle and general dark atmosphere, and of course the earth ripping in half and having blood and guts inside it)
-G-Darius (Most messed up endings ever, such as when you defeat the embryon)
-Philosoma (End crazyness)
-R-Type Final (Designers were on somthing when they made this)
-Rayforce, Raystorm and Raycrisis (this entire series is like some kind of crazed mind trip questioning your inner self....or somthing)
Possibly Ikaruga and radiant silvergun can be listed as well? I havnt played them in ages and have forgetten heaps. And people talk about Einhander like its pretty wierd as well, but i've never played it. Any other suggestions?

Einhander, definitely. Up until the end, you're given vague hints as to what's really going on, and the plot twists at the end-- political views, mindfucking conspiracy, and in the case of a certain bad ending: spirituality-- come full circle.
I don't know enough Japanese to read it fluently, but many of Cave's recent games-- Dodonpachi Dai-Ou-Jou, ESPGaluda, and Mushihime-sama, all seem to have endings which are philosophical, spiritual, and twisted, in that respectable order.
Also, even though it's a rail shooter: Rez. Oh, dear fucking god, Rez will screw with you during the final stage.

I wouldn't say the text-based, image-accompanied endings of the Cave games make any less of an impact. Part of them can be interpretted without a language barrier, through imagery, but to truly "get" the ending, you'd have to be fluent in Japanese. The Cave games aren't really comparable to Philosoma at all. I thought of Silpheed: The Lost Planet as a lesser version of Philosoma, though... Just nowhere near as trippy/chilling. (Then again, I never made it to the end of Silpheed: The Lost Planet. >_<)Macaw wrote:Thing about Cave games is all the story is mostly just text and stuff, making much less of an impact. Imagine all the Philosoma stuff happened with text intermissions... it would suck.

I guess what I was trying to say is that the text/pic endings in cave games just arnt really as exiting as in-game crazyness like say...the background in stage 7 of R-type Final, although they really are 2 completely different things with the text actualy representing story and the in-game stuff just being trippy. As to what makes more impact really depends on how well either one is done I suppose.
Then again cave games dont really try to do anything overly atmospheric, rather they are just very focused competitive scoring games.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.

it290: I CANNOT see your spoilers.
And is it still worth trying to get Philosoma if I don't already have it?
Did anyone else get the "best" ending from beating Raystorm in 13 Ships Mode? WTH does it mean??Macaw wrote:For some reason shmups tend to be obsessed with doing this kind of crazyness. Here is what I can recall off the top of my head (with reasons why):

No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Surely you jest, no one does pretentiousness quite like Treasure, heh heh.Macaw wrote:Possibly Ikaruga and radiant silvergun can be listed as well?
Most of the other games I would have thought of for this have pretty much all been mentioned...

WarpZone wrote:Hmm, we mention games expressing their themes/philosophy through their "weird" endings, off-the-wall backgrounds, plot twists, etc. Yet how many express such things through their play mechanics? Seems like that would be the natural avenue to take for a videogame, yet it's rarely seen.
Theres a few
Mischief Makers,Romance of the three kingdoms,Black and White,The Sims,God of war,Maniac Mansion

I thought that at first but when I triggered the bad ending i figured it was the Nemesis planet that gets destroyed.Macaw wrote:-Metal Black (because of the messed up end battle and general dark atmosphere, and of course the earth ripping in half and having blood and guts inside it)
