Anyone here ever play Cho Ren Sha 68K on a real X68k?
Anyone here ever play Cho Ren Sha 68K on a real X68k?
I am wondering, because I just gave it a shot on an emulator, XM6 Pro-68k, and it ran a heck of a lot slower than the Windows one. Reading a bit through what the developer wrote on his homepage the X68k version ran at 55fps and the Windows one runs at 60fps, meaning that the Windows versions runs at about 109% the speed of the original.
On top of that there is quite a bit of extra slowdown, the game clearly pushed the hardware (unless the emulator is shit, tho it seems solid from what I can tell and ran at 100% all the time). Plus lots of sprite flickering. So here we have a version which has no slowdown whatsoever vs the original which is quite a bit slower even when it does not have any of the sometimes massive slowdown going on.
If anyone actually has played it on original hardware I would love to know if it actually does slowdown as much.
Also on a sidenote, if this kinda port would happen with any game to which more people had access to the original, there would be so much whining, I don't even wanna imagine it.

Nope, but did you try switching the emulator to 16MHz mode? Maybe that'll do it. Unfortunately I don't have experience with that game outside the Windows port, sorry

Re: Anyone here ever play Cho Ren Sha 68K on a real X68k?
Yeah, seems like the emulator is not accurate. It looks somewhat faster in that video, tho still some slowdown here and there. Set the emu to 20MHz, which did not seem to help either.
Re: Anyone here ever play Cho Ren Sha 68K on a real X68k?
I think people don't complain about it much because it just makes them feel extra awesome for beating the Windows version.

Of course, that's just an opinion.

Hah, quite possible. I near 2-ALLed it couple of years ago, which felt quite nice. might try and properly 2-ALL it sometime.

It actually loops 4 times

I watched Icarus almost 2-loop CRS at 3am on a projector the size of a small cinema screen with surround sound. Shit was epic and never to be forgotten.
OT: 68k emulation is touchy as hell. You're not guaranteed to get a proper representation with it, you really need to just fork out for a machine and some floppies. I've dabbled with emulation with mixed results. Only Image Fight seems to be ok, Phalanx's graphics go tits up on stage 2 and certain games refuse to run.
Honestly, it ends up being a waste of time, so I've made a resolution to just grab a machine when next in Japan (they're pretty inexpensive!)

On the real machine the game is very smooth with just tiny amounts of slowdown at 10mhz. And there is no slowdown at all if played at 16mhz. So yeah, emulation problem. I would give it a try with Win68K High Speed if I was you, seems to run the more demanding games better then XM6 does.
Re: Anyone here ever play Cho Ren Sha 68K on a real X68k?
Last time I checked it does not. It goes from 1-1 to 3-0, what with the weird numbering of the stages. But it only does 2 loops. And you can set it to Hard which gives you harder suicide bullets from the get go. TLB is after 2nd loop boss which looks like the player ship only huge.trap15 wrote:It actually loops 4 times
If you mean by it loops that you can select CONTINUE after the game ends and then start on a harder mode, yeah it does that, but it does that forever, though the suicide bullets do not get harder indefinitely.
I don't think that qualifies as a proper loop, esp since your score starts from 0 if you do the continues thing. All it is is different difficulty modes.
Skykid: Yeah, I don't see myself buying more old computers and other old hardware than I already own. Just clutters up the space.
SuperDeadite: I shall give that a try sometime.

The Windows version was my 3rd 1CC.
Re: Anyone here ever play Cho Ren Sha 68K on a real X68k?
Wondering about this since yesterday;
10Mhz displays 101% speed
PC Version is around 109% speed
16Mhz is 167% speed
My feeling is that 16Mhz runs much faster than the pc version (checked on real hardware).
Can someone confirm this?
Strange thing is, i struggled with 10 Mhz because it plays so unstable speedwise, has more glitches and unpredictable slowdowns that kill me when switching back to faster gameplay. I played up to stage 2-1 first try in the 16mhz mode and for me it was easier than 10...

Re: Anyone here ever play Cho Ren Sha 68K on a real X68k?
That's not what the OP means. The speeds you're getting on a machine are compared against the base 10MHz unit. The game is framerate locked, so it will always run at the proper speed no matter what clock your unit is using, slowdowns aside. You want to play at the highest speed your machine has, as it will slowdown less and flicker sprites less often.
The OP is referring to the Windows version running at 60Hz frame rate, and the X68k version running at ~55Hz frame rate, due to differences in hardware. So the Windows version will always play faster than the X68k version.

Did check now side by side;
PC version is faster but 16mhz makes a huge difference to 10.
Maybe it was too much beer yesterday

This game has several display modes in config -> Screen, at least on version 1.01.
By default it's 55.45Hz but there is a 61.46Hz mode.
The later mode cuts some lines though.

Re: Anyone here ever play Cho Ren Sha 68K on a real X68k?
I started it on a 10 mhz OG 68k the other day and can say that there's more slowdown versus the the Windows port. There are some areas on the Windows port I have issues with but on the 68k they were a breeze when I let the screen flood up with bullets and enemies. I think I could possibly pull off a 2-All on the 68k but not likely for me on Windows.
