NES Toploader A/V problems

Post by joe-rel »

Hey guys,

My grandpa's toploader is giving him some trouble (see link below). I gave him an original model so he can play his games for now, but I have never worked on a model 101.
I tried different tvs, different games, different ac adapters, and different rf cables. The problem persists. Could it just need a deep cleaning or could it need resoldering? I am waiting on a security screwdriver before I can open it up.

RF is nothing but trouble, I'd just mod an AV output on it. It's surprisingly easy. I'm completely useless when it comes to electronics and managed to make one on mine.

Is there a good walkthrough for doing that? I've never attempted anything beyond cleaning pins and stuff. I do know how solder and have done stuff for car audio.

I can't remember which guide I followed, but the only real difference between them is how you build the small amp circuit.
Here is one, anyway: http://www.gamesx.com/rgbadd/nes2avmod.htm

For the transistor, I desoldered one from the existing RF circuit on the board for reusing. That was probably the hardest part of the mod, since it was really stuck and I was close to ruining it.

That mod is terrible and horribly outdated. This one is based on the circuitry used in the AV Famicom and works great: http://www.retrofixes.com/2014/05/nes-1 ... d-kit.html

If you are going to buy a mod kit anyway, I don't see why you wouldn't just go for an NESRGB.

.. or hi def nes.

but if price is a concern, I would go with the newest AV mod but for god's sake.. don't drill any holes into that retro console!

Nice, the 3.5mm jack in lieu of the RF socket is a great idea!
