I remember the previous Assault episode. I take it Aquas kept on playing this one?

I did get a chance to play Assault in an arcade once, but not long enough to do much beyond get a general feel.

Have you guys thought of doing episodes not focusing on a particular game, but instead discussing design or some other shmup-related topic? I was just listening to an episode of the Roguelike Radio podcast, about what they termed "The Hero Trap," and I really enjoyed it. It was very interesting hearing players far more experienced than me talking about the problems they've encountered with how beginners and even experienced players perceive roguelikes and how it can hurt their experience with the games, and there were some neat ideas bounced around about how designers might be able to tackle these issues. They also brought up a lot of specific examples of roguelikes to back up their ideas, which not only lent credibility but also gave me some ideas for games I should check out.

I think if done well (i.e. with research and preparation), similar discussions would be very helpful to the shmup community, both for players and for designers. Off the top of my head some potential topics are powerup systems, difficulty and the perception of difficulty, scoring systems and their role in games, rank systems, and different styles of boss fights. I know there were a couple episodes of STGWeekly with a podcast format but the last time that happened was over two years ago.

Friendly reminder that we haven't had a Great Mahou Daisakusen/Dimahoo episode yet, and Archer recently released a counterstop 1CC with Karte, in sharp 720p60 quality to boot. Would be awesome if someone could analyze and break down everything he does in the replay.

It should be a nice watch. I cleared the PCE port, which is pretty good, but struggle to get much further than halfway through the loop on JPN Kyuukyoku Tiger.

Toaplan forever. They said this was their most popular/successful game, I believe it.

After watching some marathon credits of the original JP board, there's apparently a brick wall on the stage 8 boss in later loops - if you don't have enough bombs it's nearly unbeatable due to the speed disparity between player and bullets.

Great episode. Some thoughts:

* There's no bomb bonus - at least no visible counting of them, like in Flying Shark = bomb as much as your heart desires
* The level music starts over after the first fortress boss, just as they re-use the stage 1 graphics
* You never blow up cars, it's tanks parked in those lots, Aquas ;)
* The boss he times out is pretty much impossible to no-miss if you split it up in the middle and you loose all bonus from stars if you die

Hey emphatic,

Really appreciate the polite corrections on the ep. I'll go ahead and put them in the YouTube comments as addenda.

For clarity, this is covering: Kyokugen (Adventure, 3-minute mode, 5-minute mode), Anaconda, and Pleasure Hearts.

It's sure to be a great time! :)
