Sounds much more encompassing than you suggest.

Euroshmups, run n' gun, rail shooters, arena shooters, roguelite shooters, etc.

ED: If your reaction to anything is "that's not really a shmup!" Well, that's kind of the point of the topic. But I'm hoping people use their best judgement to say "this game I like is pretty shmuppy" even if it doesn't fit the textbook definition. For example, I would say Metal Slug 3 is "shmuppy" even if most people consider it a run n' gun and not a true shmup. Super Mario World, on the other hand, is clearly a platformer.
No, it really does not. When you asked if I had read the OP, I didn't respond because I a) have already read the OP and b) am not the person trying to talk about things like Vanquish, which doesn't fall into any of the categories mentioned and has nothing to do with the thread much less the genre much less anything but the Off-Topic subforum.

Christ you're a daft cunt.

pls don't drive off newcomers elixer, Vanquish may not be relevant (Doom is more shmuppy, as Catstronaut brought up) but I don't think anyone deserved to be called a cunt for attempting to argue the point.

Just to be clear, I didn't argue about Vanquish - I admitted it was a wild stretch to be included.

I was more talking about my comment on Hard Corps Uprising, which was also an issue apparently. Granted some may disagree, but I believed it fit the criteria of the OP.

Ah this has gone on way too long and gotten way out of hand. Not an ideal way to introduce yourself to a community... :(

I'll just leave it at that.

I guess Bosconian could count as a non-traditional shmup. It's pretty awesome.

Sin & Punishment 2 is my favorite action game and one of the few games that can actually justify the existence of motion controllers, in my humble opinion.

Also, Wild Guns and Pocky & Rocky.

No love for Chelnov? really cool game, especially the MD port. In the same vein Wolf Fang is also quite solid.
