Sony PVM20L5 - Interlaced video vibrates

Post by MidOrFeed2015 »

Is this normal? This is generally why I've always preferred progressive, but I wanted to try PS1 games on PS3 through 480i instead of 480p (for the scanlines) and man, it's giving me a headache just staring at the screen at 480i.

Kinda like for 240p scanlines, 480i interlacing is more evident on CRTs with high TV Lines count. But unless you focus on texts or similar small details, it's unlikely that it will give you headache (exactly as unlikely as being able to enjoy scanlines with fast odd/even lines succession - not sure why you associated the PS3 or 480i with scanlines).

240p with very thick scanlines on the other hand - that does have the potential to be headache-inducing for some (me included).

Vibrating up and down slightly? Yes, that's how interlaced video works, although how visible the effect is varies from display to display depending on various properties of the display.

If you want to view 480i content without that, you're going to need something like a framemeister (then convert to SDI) to do the deinterlacing.

Thanks for the info. I'd rather not try and de-interlace.

Well I guess it's not a big deal to play the PS1 stuff in 480p. It does not look bad on the PVM.

It's magnified on higher TVL screens because more light is coming through. Also why it's magnified on aperture grille.

edit: *in my experience.

If you're like me then 480i is hell: 240p or else 31khz progressive thank you.

Whether or not you feel a headache (this effects everyone differently), the chances are 480i is still shitting on your eyesight... just can't recommend making do with 480i these days, even for nostalgia...

Just play ps1 games on a real ps1 (240p) and not ps3 (480i)... ? ...
Or since you've already brought digitally I wouldn't feel bad about suggesting emulation if you've got something that'll support 240p@15hz (soft15/arcadevga or whatever)...

If you own PS1 games digitally, you can play them on a PSP Go, which supports 240p output (via component) and DualShock 3 controllers. I believe it's the only platform that supports PSN PS1 games with 240p output.

Does the PS2 output 240p for all PS1 games?

Yurp. The ones that run, anyway (some have problems on different PS2 revisions).

Well, except for the PS1 stuff that's 480i.
