Phoenix mod also appeal to me too, but as long as my board is not dead yet. I would keep swopping bettery, since once swoped a bettery could laset several years. :o

And I have just successfully swopped the bettery of my Progear yesterday. :)

Great idea, I would cosider a bettery holder on my next bettery swop three years later. :o

Can anyone explain why boards are designed to eventually fail? I understand the need for encryption, but why tie it to a finite power source?

Because it means you will eventually have to send the board back to capcom for service, and they charge a handsome price to restore the rom and give you a new battery.

Actually it's to stop bootlegging, something that diluted the NEO share of the arcade markte by a fair bit. I don't really think the battery was designed to make capcom profit, it's more these boards weren't meant to live beyond the arcades into homelife (where they aren't powered 24/7).
