Yes - it will play on an NTSC-U console
No - it is NOT a region free / all-region release as it will not work on stock NTSC-J consoles. It is simply a multi-region (PAL/NTSC-U) release.

Are you excluding twin stick shooters or rail shooters?

Then there is the matter of compilations that may contain "shmupish" titles, e.g.:

Capcom Digital Collection
Namco Museum Virtual Arcade
Midway Arcade Origins
Sonics Ultimate Genesis Collection

Qubed
Xbox Live Unplugged volume 1
Xbox Live Arcade Game Pack

Capcom Arcade Cabinet

For Espgaluda II, it's worth noting that only the standard release is region free; the limited edition version is region locked.

Updated the list as Dodonpachi Saidaioujou is region free and Is NOT IP locked on the Japan marketplace. So it is downloadable without any VPN required.

Bangia-O and Galaga Legions don't seem to get a lot of love, especially compared to Cave games :( :(
They're great games though

Does Ginga Force from the HK marketplace work on a PAL console and do I need a VPN to be able to download it?

I do not have a pal system to test this but it's confirmed it is region free and does not have an IP lock so it should work on your PAL without a VPN. If games in the marketplace are IP locked it won't even let u begin a download it'll give you an error message so your credit card is never charged.

I've purchased probably 90% of the Xbox 360 indie game shmups. Only a handful of them are mentioned in this thread but there are many more scattered in other threads on this site. Since the service is coming down, wish there was a masterlist of all of them. Would like to purchase them all since most of them are 1 - 5 dollars. There going to become rare later this year.

Can't find Trouble Witches. It didn't look that great but I wanted to complete my collection.

Are delisted ones gone forever?

There's a version of Trouble Witches on Steam now; not sure about other PC platforms. But when something is delisted from Xbox Live or PSN, especially older games, it's relatively rare for it to appear again.

This might not be the best thread for this, but didn't find immediately better one and didn't want to start own thread for this.

I got Japan X360 few months ago and with DDP DOJ and was disappointed to find out that the whole stage select seemed to be useless as when I used it, I started with no power ups no matter which stage I selected. I also checked most of the old STGWeekly episode about the game and on that video, the guys were saying the same thing so I took it as a truth. Then as an accident I tried the stage select again and noticed that it depends whether you get full power ups or none on which button use use to start the game from stage select. If you use "start" button it gives you full power ups and if you use "A" you get none. Of course it doesn't seem to say this anywhere (I think, I don't read/understand Japanese though) and what a strange implementation... sounds like a hack added as a patch

Might be common knowledge, but thought to mention this for those mind who happen to own this version of the game and didn't know this.

.

Is this list now considered comprehensive and complete? It's proving very useful but I noticed Space Invaders Infinity Gene (XBLA) is not mentioned and I was just wondering if there's any more not mentioned.

For physical releases

From the list above:
1942 Joint Strike - this got a NTSC physical disk release in the Capcom Digital Collection
Galaga / Galaga Legions / Xevious - this got a NTSC physical disk release in the Namco Museum Virtual Arcade (Also has some others: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namco_Mus ... ual_Arcade)

There's a bunch of outliers that are not on this list:
PopCap Arcade Vol. 2 - Heavy Weapon
Qubed - Rez HD
Xbox Live Arcade Unplugged: Volume 1 - Geometry Wars 1
Xbox LIVE Arcade Game Pack - Geometry Wars 2
Midway Arcade Origins - Defender I and II, Smash TV, Total Carnage, Robotron 2084, Sinistar, Spy Hunter I and II
Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection - Fantasy Zone, Super Thunder Blade, Space Harrier, Zaxxon

On the JPN region Xbox Series X console, it's not possible to play/boot up DDP-DOJ EX (even though it's a JPN region 360 game to begin with). Why is that?

Xbox One doesn't have full backwards compatibility, and unfortunately DOJ never made the cut. As far as I know Guwange and Nin2-Jump are the only two Cave games that work on Xbox One/Series.

Too bad Microsoft doesn't support nearly any of these titles on XBox 1 for backwards compatibility.

Wish I'd known back when I was big on XB360 the amount of shmups that were available for it.

Anyone downloaded ESPGaluda II recently? I've been trying to reinstall it today and, with or without VPN, the DL fails at around 80%.

edit: after 6 attempts and constant fiddling with VPN settings, it worked.

I was under the impression that Microsoft dropped IP-locking for Games on Demand titles a while back? I downloaded Pink Sweets, Akai Katana, and Saidaioujou a few months ago without a VPN and had no issues.

Only specific games have the IP check. I have tons of digital JPN games on my US 360, ESPGaluda II is the only one I need a VPN for.

Yes, I'm aware of that, but I distinctly remember someone mentioning in another thread that Microsoft had abandoned IP checks a while ago.
